Mugello MotoGP Rider Evaluations: A single competitor achieves perfection on his home turf
Crash.net presents an analysis of the performance ratings for competitors in the Italian MotoGP held at Mugello.
Francesco Bagnaia – 10
Having not completed the previous three sprint races, Francesco Bagnaia made a triumphant return to victory, showcasing a commanding performance from the current world champion. Bagnaia successfully countered efforts by competitors such as Marquez, Bastianini, and Martin to bridge the distance. It was an ideal race at their home Grand Prix for the factory Ducati team, with Bagnaia taking control of the race, moving from fifth to first in merely two corners. From then on, Bagnaia faced no challenges.
Enea Bastianini – 9
Enea Bastianini managed to address his persistent issues in qualifying, positioning himself for a significant finish in the sprint. However, his chances were dashed after a collision with Jorge Martin caused him to fall. Even though Marc Marquez surpassed him towards the end of the race, Bastianini leveraged his strong performance in the later stages to reclaim his spot just before the last lap. His remarkable speed on the final lap enabled him to overtake Martin, showcasing his racing prowess.
Jorge Martin – 8
Jorge Martin kicked off Saturday on a high note, clinching the pole position as the frontrunner in the championship. However, his advantage quickly diminished when he fell during the sprint race, soon after Marc Marquez had passed him. Initially poised for an easy second-place, Martin witnessed another cut into his championship lead when Bastianini overtook him for the second spot.
Marc Marquez – 9
Marc Marquez overcame his previous qualifying challenges and showcased a speed on par with that of sprint race victor Francesco Bagnaia, securing a second-place finish after an early tussle with Martin cost him valuable time. In the race on Sunday, Marquez displayed impressive pace but struggled in the final stages as the trio leading him capitalized on the superior capabilities of their GP24 bikes. His biggest shortfall was noted in his performance during corner exits.
Pedro Acosta – 8.5
With a fresh contract extension binding him to KTM's main squad until 2025, Pedro Acosta demonstrated his exceptional skills by clinching his third sprint podium in the 2024 season. Standing out as the best among the non-Ducati competitors in the grand prix, Acosta initially positioned himself as a podium hopeful but eventually couldn't keep pace with the leading group, where Ducati riders showcased their dominance yet again.
Franco Morbidelli – 8
Capitalizing on his recent promising performances, Franco Morbidelli demonstrated formidable strength in the sprint race, clinching the fourth position. The 2020 MotoGP second-placer reinforced his impressive fifth-place finish with a sixth-place achievement in the grand prix, successfully fending off a mid-race push from Maverick Vinales.
Fabio Di Giannantonio – 7
Narrowly trailing Binder by a mere three tenths in the dash, Fabio Di Giannantonio succeeded in maintaining his position ahead of fellow GP23 competitor Alex Marquez, securing the seventh position. Di Giannantonio showcased a consistent pattern of strong performance in lengthier races, demonstrating excellent speed in the latter part of the 23-lap race by overtaking Alex Marquez and Vinales.
Maverick Vinales Scores a 7
After experiencing a challenging sixth round in Catalunya, Aprilia's Maverick Vinales made a strong comeback, achieving third place in the qualifying rounds and taking fifth in the sprint race. However, Vinales faced difficulties in maintaining the anticipated race speed towards the end of the main race.
Alex Marquez – 6.5
Finishing ninth for Gresini Ducati, Marquez put in a solid performance throughout the weekend and race. However, the Spanish rider was not quite able to reach the level of his team-mate.
Brad Binder – 6.5
After a disastrous qualifying session that saw Brad Binder exit in Q1, the KTM team member made impressive strides in the sprint, finishing in 6th place. While advancement was more challenging in the main event, Binder managed to climb the ranks, securing a spot in the top ten.
Aleix Espargaro – 6
Falling short of the speed demonstrated in Barcelona, Aleix Espargaro finished in ninth place, barely securing the last point for the sprint race. The primary challenge for Espargaro and the Aprilia team during the Italian MotoGP was maneuverability. Espargaro found himself in 11th place in the main race, unable to enhance his showing.
Raul Fernandez – 6
Raul Fernandez concluded the race in the same position he began, delivering a steady yet unremarkable performance in the grand prix, following a sprint race where he did not manage to earn any points.
Marco Bezzecchi – 5
Once a contender at the forefront of races in the previous season, Marco Bezzecchi continues to struggle with the GP23, with no improvement in sight at Mugello.
Miguel Oliveira's aspirations for a points-scoring finish in the sprint were dashed early on after a collision with Fabio Quartararo led to his crash. Despite striving for a comeback, Oliveira ended up being the last among the four Aprilia competitors, unable to secure any points after the challenging race.
Alex Rins – 5
Outperforming his teammate Quartararo in the qualifying rounds, Alex Rins experienced a decline similar to his previous performance in Catalunya, dropping from 10th to 13th place in the sprint. Rins saw no improvement on Sunday, continuing to fall back but managed to secure a point for Yamaha.
Jack Miller – 4
It was a weekend Miller would rather erase from memory, particularly as the official KTM racer, who, after it was announced he wouldn't be returning for the 2025 season, failed to deliver the anticipated level
Pol Espargaro – 6
An impressive performance from the KTM test rider, ending the race merely 0.3 seconds behind Miller.
Fabio Quartararo – 4
In the sprint, Fabio Quartararo was struck by Miguel Oliveira, leading to an unavoidable crash that resulted in his retirement from the race. This incident came after a challenging qualifying round for the 2021 world champion. The sprint proved disastrous for Quartararo, as did the main grand prix event, where he ended up not scoring any points and finishing more than 30 seconds behind the winner.
Johann Zarco – 4
Trailing just after his compatriot, Johann Zarco was at the forefront of Honda’s efforts, yet it turned out to be yet another disappointing event for the team from Japan.
Luca Marini – 4
Finishing as the final rider among those who completed the race, Luca Marini ended up trailing Aprilia's test pilot, Lorenzo Savadori, during the quick dash, further emphasizing his challenging debut season with Honda. Despite this, Marini did outpace Savadori in the overall grand prix, crossing the finish line just shy of a second after Zarco.
Lorenzo Savadori – 4
Joan Mir – 3
Joan Mir faced another setback in his challenging 2023 season, as he crashed during the seventh lap at the first turn, marking yet another race he couldn't finish.
Augusto Fernandez – 3.5
An irate Augusto Fernandez made an early return to the pit lane due to problems with his RC16. The Spaniard, feeling the heat, seemed visibly upset with his team as he made his way down the pit lane.
Takaaki Nakagami – 3
Similar to Mir, Takaaki Nakagami's race concluded prematurely when he crashed after losing control of the front-end at turn 12.
