Bagnaia Blazes to the Top in Italian MotoGP Practice with Record Lap, Marquez and Rins in Hot Pursuit
Francesco Bagnaia leads the first day of the Italian MotoGP at Mugello, achieving an impressive lap time under 1 minute and 45 seconds.
Just three minutes into his practice session, KTM test pilot Pol Espargaro equaled the record for the highest top speed ever achieved in MotoGP.
Espargaro achieved a top speed of 366.1 km/h, as Maverick Vinales continued to impress in the Italian MotoGP, replicating his FP1 performance.
Marc Marquez broke through the 1m 45s threshold, extending his lead over Vinales by almost six tenths of a second.
Marc Marquez's ex-teammate at Honda, Joan Mir, experienced a significant incident when he navigated through the gravel at the rapid chicane located in the fourth sector.
In the initial stages of the second practice session, within the first ten minutes, Pedro Acosta once again encountered trouble at turn one, mirroring his error from the first free practice session.
Acosta sprinted across the gravel, positioning his factory Ducati in third place, trailing behind Marquez and Alex Rins.
Fabio Quartararo, similar to Rins, emphasized the advancements Yamaha had achieved, as he impressively managed to stay close behind Jorge Martin. Martin had just clocked consecutive rapid laps to secure the sixth position.
Acosta experienced a significant crash at turn 13, resulting in his RC16 being severely damaged. Fortunately, the young Spaniard was unhurt and quickly stood up.
With the last 20 minutes swiftly nearing, Vinales was among the initial riders to launch a fast lap, propelling himself once again to the forefront of the standings.
Vinales experienced a slight delay in the fourth sector, yet it didn't prevent him from surpassing Marquez.
In an attempt to catapult into the top three, Martin found himself caught behind Miguel Oliveira during his second attempt at a fast lap. Then, a mishap on his third try prevented him from advancing beyond his fourth-place standing.
As the last time trials commenced, Bagnaia unleashed a blistering lap, shattering the 1m 44s threshold.
The global champion secured a lead of almost half a second over Vinales, followed by Oliveira who moved into second place, surpassing both Marc Marquez and Martin.
Acosta and Rins made significant strides in the latter stages, with Rins succeeding in positioning himself in second place, trailing behind Bagnaia.
The current world champion finished the session at the top, ahead of Rins, Acosta, Oliveira, and Marc Marquez.
