Alex Marquez Accepts Bagnaia’s Apology Amid MotoGP Clash Controversy: Damage Remains
Alex Marquez acknowledges Bagnaia's apology, yet notes "the harm remains"
"He has my gratitude for his statement. However, the impact on myself and my team is irreversible."
Alex Marquez expressed gratitude towards Francesco Bagnaia for his apology, after Bagnaia accused the Spanish rider of deliberately causing a crash during the Aragon MotoGP race.
However, Marquez also mentioned that the harm to both his reputation and that of the Gresini team has already occurred.
"Marquez expressed his gratitude, stating, 'I appreciate his apology and am truly thankful for what he said.'"
"However, it's equally accurate to say that the harm inflicted on me personally, my crew, and my reputation as a cyclist is already a reality."
With that, I'm ready to turn the page. I prefer not to discuss it further. I'm setting my sights on what's ahead.
Bagnaia and Marquez ended up injured and sore following a clash for the third position during the final moments of Sunday's race.
The FIM Stewards determined that 'no rider was chiefly to blame' and decided against taking any additional measures.
Both believed the other could have allowed more space, yet Bagnaia escalated the matter by claiming Marquez was "seeking out this collision" by "accelerating."
Marquez stated on social media, “Intentionally colliding with another rider is something I would never do.”
After some thought, Bagnaia felt remorse over his choice of words, yet maintained his belief that #73 was to blame following a 'forceful' defense.
"On Thursday, at his home race in Misano, Bagnaia admitted to having been overly harsh in his language. He clarified that he did not mean to suggest that the crash was intentional on his part."
The confrontation between Bagnaia and Marquez has caught fire online, sparked by previous altercations involving Bagnaia's guide, Valentino Rossi, and Marc's sibling, Alex.
"It all comes down to your perspective and who you are," Marquez responded, when questioned about the attention MotoGP received due to the event.
"Like I mentioned, the harm has already occurred. It's comparable to this situation.
"In my opinion, it's not beneficial for the sport overall, however, it's already happened and I prefer not to discuss this matter further."
"I'm grateful that he offered an apology for what he said, and that settles it."
Marc, Alex's teammate and sibling, achieved his inaugural victories riding a Ducati at Aragon. Meanwhile, Jorge Martin's consecutive runner-up finishes provided the Pramac competitor with a 23-point advantage in the championship standings over the current world champion, Bagnaia.
