Aleix Espargaro’s Strategic Triumph: Predicts Rivals’ Crashes to Clinch Catalunya Sprint Victory
Aleix Espargaro remarked, “I told myself ‘they're pushing too hard’ – and I was correct.”
“I thought, ‘it's either going to be a crash or they'll end up wrecking both the front and the rear tyres.'”
Aleix Espargaro claimed he was aware his competitors were pushing beyond their limits before their falls during the sprint race in Barcelona.
Espargaro's remarkable weekend at the Catalunya MotoGP reached another high on Saturday as he clinched victory in the sprint, following the exit of three leading riders due to crashes.
Espargaro revealed his plans to retire from MotoGP after this season, yet his win on Saturday in his home country showcased his skill and strategy.
Raul Fernandez, along with Brad Binder and Pecco Bagnaia, were at the forefront before they each had a crash, yet Espargaro anticipated such an outcome.
"Espargaro mentioned on Thursday that full throttle is an option at 80% of the circuits," he said later. "However, there are some circuits where speed isn't the only factor."
Initially, I believed I was capable of keeping pace with them. However, following a poor start, I thought, 'they're pushing beyond the bounds.'
"They utilized both the front and the back extensively. From my viewpoint at the back, it was visible."
I thought, 'it's either a collision or they're going to damage both the front and back tire, leaving you with choices later on.'
"I was correct."
"I made an effort to avoid passing them. I was able to keep up with their speed. I observed everyone's speed and realized I was the sole person who demonstrated the ability to complete a few laps in less than 39.5 seconds. Since they were clocking that time, it indicated they were pushing beyond their limits."
"Had I attempted to pass, I would have exceeded the speed limit."
"So my suggestion was to hold off for five laps. Once the grip decreases, it would open up the opportunity for me to make a move."
"I initiated an assault on Jorge Martin, followed by Pedro Acosta, which then led to a cascade of others crashing.
"Occasionally, gaining experience can be highly beneficial!"
Espargaro expressed immense joy at securing a victory in his final home race.
"Incredible. Following a challenging race where your concentration is key," he remarked.
"When pushing yourself to the edge, it's hard to tell if you're present or halfway across the world. Your attention is completely absorbed."
"Lifting the bike, you find yourself on your home track's main straightaway, crossing the finish line in first place. I am overjoyed."
This week, the Aprilia rider announced his retirement, a decision that has freed him from any further anticipations.
"He mentioned, "I'm not feeling any stress. My contract runs through to its conclusion, and once Valencia is behind me, I'll head back home. I'm aiming to enjoy myself and keep smiling."
"I've never liked being on the grid. It's always the low point of my weekend. I never find it enjoyable. But today was different. I had a chat with my wife and caught up with my friends."
Espargaro expressed, "It's like a dream come true. I'm speechless."
"Securing the top spot, clinching the sprint victory, with everyone in the stands rooting for me…
"I couldn't imagine a more perfect Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at my final home Grand Prix."
