A Farewell to the Track: Aleix Espargaro to Retire from MotoGP at the End of 2024 Season
Breaking News: Aleix Espargaro to Retire from MotoGP After 2024 Season
Aleix Espargaro is set to conclude his career in MotoGP when the season wraps up.
Aleix Espargaro has declared he will be stepping away from MotoGP racing following the conclusion of this year.
Espargaro announced before the Catalunya MotoGP this weekend that he plans to retire. He made this announcement during a unique press conference attended by Aprilia, past teammates, current competitors, and his brother Pol.
At 34 years old, the rider from Aprilia, who holds the title of the most senior competitor in the current lineup, has decided to retire, following several weeks of openly considering the possibility.
Espargaro debuted in his initial MotoGP race in 2009 and has competed consistently as a full-time participant for 13 seasons.
He secured victories in three major races: Argentina in 2022, and both Silverstone and Barcelona in 2023. Since 2017, he has been associated with teams such as ART (Aprilia), Suzuki, Forward Yamaha, and Aprilia.

"Numerous competitors around the globe, present today, have achieved more victories than I have," he stated.
"I put in all my effort and dedicated myself fully.
Frequently, I doubted my abilities compared to other riders. However, through diligent effort, I attained a significant level of proficiency.
The previous couple of years have been incredible. It felt like I was living in a dream.
"I aim to conclude my career as a professional cyclist on a positive note."
The week was challenging. It seemed as though I was entering an unusual environment. However, I am pleased.
"I'm hoping my fellow competitors will gift me a victory this weekend!"
Espargaro elaborated on his significant choice, stating, "The competitors present now often delay until Wednesday to travel to competitions. It's the pinnacle of importance in their lives."
In the past, I shared similar sentiments. Currently, I'm inclined towards spending more time at home. Being with my children brings me joy.
"I maintain honesty with myself. If your attention isn't dedicated to becoming a MotoGP rider, it's challenging."
Espargaro disclosed that his decision to retire was influenced by his brother Pol being dropped from regular racing and experiencing a terrible accident on the opening day of the 2023 season.
Following Pol's accident, the aftermath was challenging. The impact was significant, and it profoundly affected him.
He seemed happier than usual, which was surprising to me.
Away from the racetrack, enjoyment seemed scarce at home. Yet, he found immense joy in the company of his loved ones.
"He influenced my choice in this matter."
Maverick Vinales, who was persuaded by Espargaro to switch to Aprilia following his departure from Yamaha, has experienced a grand prix triumph and two Sprint wins this season, he stated:
"Aleix is an amazing colleague. We've shared four years of experiences and created memories that will last a lifetime."
"Collectively, we aim to elevate Aprilia to new heights. I hold cherished memories with Aleix. We have another year to further raise Aprilia's status as a team.”
Massimo Rivola, the CEO of Aprilia, expressed his gratitude towards Aleix, stating, "I'm deeply grateful to you, Aleix, for helping us craft such an extraordinary narrative. Your resilience during tough times and your exemplary behavior have been an inspiration to us all."
"Earning the captain's armband on the field through your outstanding performance, you led us to our inaugural podium, achieved our first pole position, secured our first win here in Barcelona, and accomplished our first one-two finish alongside Maverick."
"Your essence, through your highs and lows, through your personality, mirrors the vigor of this squad and the entire Noale plant. I'm uncertain about your future plans, but you will forever be a part of the Aprilia family.
"Starting now, a fresh chapter begins for the rider market, and Aprilia Racing will undoubtedly take active steps forward. Our unique approach will guarantee a bright future for this team, which your support has elevated to an elite level."
Espargaro is anticipated to assume a testing and wild-card position with Aprilia, though he mentioned his current concentration is on the ongoing season.
