Driver ratings for the Austrian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen gets his lowest rating of the year
Crash.net's evaluations of F1 drivers after an eventful 2024 Austrian Grand Prix.
George Russell – 9
Though Russell's victory marked Mercedes' first since 2022 and came under fortunate conditions, his performance throughout the weekend was impressive. He seized the moment when the chance presented itself.
Oscar Piastri – 7.5
Piastri may feel let down for not capitalizing on the incident between Verstappen and Norris. Nevertheless, he managed to claw his way back from a seventh-place start to secure a second-place finish. His speed in the final stages of the race was remarkable.
Carlos Sainz – 8.5
Despite Ferrari having the fourth-quickest car in Austria, Sainz delivered a strong performance throughout the weekend, securing a substantial amount of points.
Lewis Hamilton – 7
The Red Bull Ring in Austria remains a challenging circuit for Hamilton, and this race was no exception.
Max Verstappen – 6.5
Although Verstappen performed exceptionally well in Austria overall, he triggered the clash with Norris, resulting in a 10-second penalty for him.
Nico Hulkenberg – 9.5
Hulkenberg delivered an outstanding performance throughout the weekend. He reached Q3 in qualifying and turned that achievement into Haas' top finish of the season.
Sergio Perez – 5.5
Perez's struggles in Europe persisted in Austria, trailing significantly behind his teammate. Despite having his Sunday performance hampered by damage to his sidepod, Perez was never in contention with the front-running teams.
Kevin Magnussen – 8
Magnussen, much like Hulkenberg, delivered an impressive performance in Austria. His showing in the sprint race was particularly noteworthy.
Daniel Ricciardo – 8
Ricciardo had a solid weekend, performing well without much fanfare. He clearly outpaced his teammate Tsunoda and secured a spot in the top 10.
Pierre Gasly – 7.5
Although Ocon seemed to have the advantage in qualifying, Gasly excelled during the race. The two drivers fought fiercely, but ultimately, Gasly emerged victorious.
Charles Leclerc – 6
Leclerc had a terrible weekend. He faced an anti-stall problem during the sprint, and damage on the first lap of the race completely spoiled his performance.
Esteban Ocon – 7
Ocon appeared to have the advantage over Gasly, but in the race on Sunday, Gasly ultimately prevailed.
Lance Stroll – 6
Aston Martin struggled with speed in Austria, causing Stroll to be eliminated in the first qualifying round. He was never in the running for a top 10 position.
Yuki Tsunoda – 6
Tsunoda had a challenging weekend, receiving a fine due to inappropriate remarks made over the team radio.
Alex Albon – 6.5
Williams faced difficulties with their speed in Austria, with Albon being outpaced by his teammate Sargeant during the sprint qualifying. However, the team managed to regain their usual standing in the main event.
Valtteri Bottas – 6.5
Sauber remains the slowest team in Formula 1, yet Bottas once again held a clear edge over Zhou.
Zhou Guanyu – 6
Zhou faced more challenges compared to Bottas in Austria.
Fernando Alonso – 5.5
Alonso's unfortunate streak in 2024 persists with another disorganized weekend. He received a 10-second time penalty.
Logan Sargeant – 5.5
Sargeant's performance peaked when he managed to outperform Albon in the sprint qualifying, but the rest of his weekend didn't stand out.
Lando Norris – 8
Norris had a challenging weekend in Austria, as an incident with Verstappen forced him to retire from the race. In the sprint, his inexperience showed, and he attempted to compensate during the main event. Despite his aggressive efforts, things didn't go as planned. It's a learning experience for Norris overall.
