Williams’ Next F1 Star: Vowles Unveils Key Criteria for Selecting 2025 Driver Line-Up
EXCLUSIVE: Williams outlines selection process for upcoming F1 driver
James Vowles discloses the qualities Williams is looking for in the final addition to their 2025 Formula 1 team.
James Vowles points out that the deciding elements for the last available seat on Williams' team for the 2025 Formula 1 season will be the driver's skill, personality, and commitment to the team's vision.
Logan Sargeant's position within the team appears to be on uncertain footing, with widespread speculation suggesting he might not retain his seat for the upcoming season. In light of this, Williams is exploring potential candidates to team up with Alex Albon, who secured his place by agreeing to a multi-year contract extension in May.
Williams is evaluating both Carlos Sainz, who is departing from Ferrari, and Valtteri Bottas, who is also available, for their team lineup. In a special interview at the Hungarian Grand Prix with Crash.net, team leader Vowles detailed the qualities he seeks in potential drivers.
"Primarily, it's essential that I have two drivers who are challenging each other to the maximum," Vowles elaborated.
"It's not a scenario where one is at the forefront and the other trails behind. Rather, it's about two pilots pushing boundaries together, which effectively doubles the insights gained and the efforts put into configurations."
"The person should deeply share Williams' values and their vision for progress. It's crucial to me that they are constantly striving to enhance performance, even if it's just by a fraction of a second."
"The drivers within this organization also serve as its guiding forces. A mere ten words from them can carry more weight than an hour-long speech from myself. It's crucial that they are in sync with our objectives and embrace the responsibility that comes with it."
"Performance is inherently linked with this aspect. However, the third and fourth components involve the development of the product. It's not merely about utilizing it and expressing dissatisfaction. Rather, it's about adopting a proactive attitude of 'I want this to improve, how can I contribute?' That's the kind of initiative I'm seeking."
Vowles pointed out that, although sheer performance is a key metric in selecting a driver, personality and conduct play significant roles as well.
"He explained, "My approach is heavily reliant on data analysis. I apply statistical measures to numerous aspects. This includes their performance in qualifying rounds, their behavior during races, their defensive capabilities, and their effectiveness in offensive maneuvers.
"What is their response when external challenges arise? Is it constructive or detrimental? Do they support the team or distance themselves from it? Have I observed whether this team tends to progress or regress under their influence?"
One might argue that several factors contribute to the situation, including the behavior and attitude of the driver involved. Are they the type of person who rises to the challenge when faced with adversity, or do they tend to retreat from difficult situations at their core?
"Would they be the kind of people I can phone at 11pm to discuss improvements? Or do they isolate themselves after work? What's their personality like? It's not about a single quality, but rather a blend of all these aspects."
Referring to Williams' program for developing young drivers as a particularly striking case, Vowles pointed out that the selection criteria are evenly split, with half based on raw performance and the other half on conduct and the ability to handle stress.
"I would prefer to choose someone who is ranked third in the championship – specifically in the junior divisions – who excels at handling pressure, over someone who is in first place but falters when the stakes are high.
"As you enter Formula 1, the ability to perform under pressure increasingly becomes crucial."
