Volkswagen isn't intending to venture into the domain of electric vehicles with two-speed gearboxes, unlike Porsche and Mercedes-Benz.

At the 2024 Los Angeles car expo on Thursday, Volkswagen's chief of worldwide research and development, Kai Grünitz, expressed to Green Car Reports that the car manufacturer does not consider dual-speed transmissions necessary for electric vehicles.

Grünitz mentioned that currently, there aren't any intentions to manufacture it, clarifying that this is due to a lack of interest from consumers for multi-speed transmissions in electric vehicles.

Grünitz subsequently remarked that investing in something is unjustified if customers show no interest in it.

"Frankly speaking, if you consider the ID.7, it stands out as one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles," stated Stefan Voswinkel, who leads the product communications department at Volkswagen.

Grünitz claimed that their product is top-notch within its category, specifically mentioning the VW ID.7. This vehicle's release in the U.S. has been postponed without a set date. It operates on a single-speed reduction gear system, similar to other electric vehicles that are built on VW's MEB platform for electric cars.

Grünitz pointed out that besides multi-speed transmissions, there are alternative methods to either decrease or enhance efficiencies, emphasizing that the engine side holds the greatest significance in this regard.

Grünitz noted that numerous minor adjustments can enhance performance without needing to modify the transmission.

Upcoming 2024 Model of the Volkswagen Golf

Despite acknowledging that Volkswagen has developed a manual transmission for electric vehicles and that he has personally tried it out, Grünitz revealed he was not impressed by it. He explained that for performance-focused cars such as an electric GTI, he prefers the seamless driving experience that is characteristic of a single-speed transmission in EVs.

The soon-to-be-released 2026 model of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class marks the debut of the brand's latest MMA platform and will feature a dual-speed gearbox. Leaders at Mercedes have emphasized that efficiency is now paramount. Grünitz expressed optimism, saying, "We hope it will emerge as a new standard, although it hasn't reached that point just yet."

Grünitz pointed out the lack of conversation surrounding efficiency. Even though companies like Lucid are quite outspoken on the matter, Grünitz observed that it's not a topic on the minds of consumers, questioning why such discussions aren't occurring among their clientele.

In conclusion, Grünitz pointed out that increasing the efficiency of vehicles would also raise their cost.

Survey Reveals 92% of EV Owners Won’t Go Back to Gas: The Future of Electric Loyalty

Published

on

By

Research indicates that a mere 1% of electric vehicle consumers would consider reverting to traditional gasoline vehicles. This finding emerges from a recent poll conducted by the Global EV Alliance, a collective of electric vehicle driver groups from 38 nations.

According to the study, an overwhelming 92% of existing electric vehicle owners intend to purchase another electric vehicle when it's time for a new car. A mere 1% would switch back to a traditional gasoline or diesel vehicle if they had to make an immediate replacement, and only 4% would think about getting a plug-in hybrid as an alternative to their current electric vehicle.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) come equipped with a petrol engine, which drivers who have previously owned an all-electric vehicle may view as a secondary power option.

Upcoming 2024 version of the Tesla Model Y, presented by Tesla, Inc.

The study utilized data from 23,000 individuals across 18 nations, collected from August 27 to November 20, 2024. The results were adjusted in proportion to the size of each country's electric vehicle (EV) fleet. The United States' data, for instance, was given greater emphasis, while Sweden's was scaled back, to mirror each nation's respective EV market size, as clarified by the Global EV Alliance in an official statement.

The primary attraction for EV owners to stick with electric vehicles was the benefit of reduced running expenses, as cited by 45% of participants when asked about their intentions to purchase another EV. Additionally, the reduced environmental footprint of EVs was a significant consideration for 40% of those surveyed, while 32% also valued the positive effect on the immediate surroundings and the quieter operation of these vehicles.

2023 Redline Edition of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV

The findings seem positive for the uptake of electric vehicles, yet with studies of this nature, there's a lot left to decipher. This includes how questions are formulated when inquiring about consumers' intentions to purchase post their initial EV, and if it actually substitutes an EV or a different car in their home.

According to recent research by S&P Global Mobility in 2023, excluding Tesla, about 50% of families with electric vehicles opted for a traditional gasoline-powered car when acquiring their next automobile, partially because of the limited selection of electric models from other manufacturers. Moreover, the Department of Energy highlighted earlier in the year that electric vehicles in the U.S. are not being used as extensively as their gasoline counterparts, suggesting that they may not be replacing them on a one-for-one basis.

Factorial Energizes EV Future with Production-Ready Solid-State Batteries

Published

on

By

Factorial, a company from Massachusetts, has unveiled a method for creating solid-state batteries suitable for electric cars that is nearing the scalability required for widespread manufacturing.

On Thursday, the firm revealed that it has upgraded its sample cells for car manufacturers to a significant 40-amp-hour size, pertinent to the automotive industry. They have adopted a dry-coating technique which they assert optimizes the energy capacity of the batteries and reduces both production expenses and ecological damage.

Cells with a factorial solid-state composition

Factorial announced that its dry coating technique removes the use of dangerous solvents, according to their press statement. They assert that this method consumes less energy compared to traditional production methods. Additionally, the solid-state chemical approach they use negates the necessity for the formation process that is typical with liquid-electrolyte chemistries, leading to even more energy savings.

Factorial has highlighted that it implemented specialized machinery at its development hub in Massachusetts to develop the dry coating technique, which lays the groundwork for production in full-scale battery plants, such as the facility Factorial revealed plans for in 2023. Regarding longevity, Factorial asserts that its compact prototype batteries have endured beyond 2,000 charging and discharging cycles.

Depiction of a Dodge Charger Daytona prototype being utilized for the testing of Factorial's solid-state battery cells.

Factorial has secured investment from automotive giants such as Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis. The company disclosed earlier in the year that their joint efforts with Mercedes have led to the creation of battery cells that could potentially enhance vehicle range by 80% due to improved energy storage capacity. Not long ago, Factorial revealed plans for Stellantis to commence trials of its solid-state battery technology in a series of Dodge Charger Daytona electric vehicles, with testing set to begin in 2026.

Several car manufacturers are exploring the potential of solid-state batteries. Earlier in the year, Toyota revealed their intention to start production of these batteries around 2026, although initially on a small scale. Meanwhile, Factorial seems to be advancing towards producing solid-state batteries in quantities significant for the market.

Upcoming Model: The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle Introduces a New Approach to Regenerative Braking

The 2026 version of the Mercedes CLA Electric Vehicle will feature authentic single-pedal operation

Mercedes concentrated on maximizing efficiency and the ability to reclaim energy in their CLA electric vehicle.

Mercedes has not disclosed the price for the 2026 CLA Electric Vehicle, which will be unveiled in 2025.

Until this point, numerous car manufacturers have opted to reduce the regenerative braking feature in electric vehicles due to worries about maintaining control on slippery surfaces.

Mercedes-Benz is shifting away from its previous approach for its upcoming electric vehicles, beginning with the innovative system set to premiere in future models like the CLA EV.

While taking a short drive in a 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA electric vehicle prototype amidst the Austrian Alps, Mercedes' senior manager of electric drive systems, Timo Stegmaier, alongside Tom Steller, a representative for the car manufacturer, showcased the upcoming electric vehicle’s deceleration and drive mechanisms under intense snowy blizzard circumstances.

Here's the insight I gained.

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA electric vehicle prioritizes single-pedal operation. The Mercedes crew has acknowledged that they have taken into account the opinions and criticisms from both consumers and the press about the inconsistent and shifting brake sensation in the EQE and EQS electric vehicles.

Initially, the brakes were among the lowest quality available, but they have been improved to a satisfactory level via software upgrades. However, this situation will not apply to the CLA EV, according to what Mercedes engineers disclosed to Green Car Reports in November. They assured that the CLA EV's brake pedal would remain stationary unless the driver actively presses it.

The CLA EV is equipped with three distinct regenerative braking settings: D-, D, and D+. Additionally, there's an extra mode named D Auto. The most intense regenerative braking experience, allowing for complete one-pedal driving, is activated in D- mode. This setting was employed throughout our entire test drive of the prototype, with the following modes progressively reducing the regenerative effect.

The D Auto feature dynamically modifies the regenerative braking mechanism based on the driving scenario. Take the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E 53 Hybrid as an example, where this mode is integrated with the adaptive cruise control and various safety features, allowing for a flexible operation. However, its performance lacks uniformity and foreseeability. Presently, it's not certain how the D Auto function operates within the CLA EV model.

The twisting paths up the mountain were blanketed with drifting snow atop a layer of hidden ice. Despite Stegmaier's rapid engagement of the harshest regenerative braking setting using D-, and easing off the gas pedal, the Michelin Alpin 5 snow tires maintained a firm grip without slipping. The advanced MMA electric platform's power control units and engine control units allowed the regenerative braking system to respond in a flash and adapt its function. The vehicle remained stable and on course while slowing down and even through the bends. Truly remarkable. Not all people can handle such challenging conditions with such finesse.

To clarify, the majority of electric vehicles currently available have drive modes such as Snow, Winter, or those designed for Slippery Conditions, which generally lessen or turn off the regenerative braking system. This action is taken to prevent the tires from losing grip and to maintain the vehicle's stability when driving on slick roads.

A representative from Mercedes explained to GCR that the advice given by Stegmaier to employ the highest level of energy recovery during slick road conditions pertains particularly to the CLA electric vehicle, which incorporates advanced sensor technology. The CLA's system is engineered to instantly adapt to varying driving surfaces to enhance both safety and energy use effectively. Based on my own experience, it performed accordingly.

The EQE and EQS series are built on distinct foundations, each with their own electronic frameworks, array of sensors, and a combination of management systems and programming. The electric vehicles in question handle acceleration and deceleration in unique ways, and do not prioritize real-time optimization of energy recovery or performance efficiency.

The CLA has a recuperation system that can handle up to 200 kilowatts before it needs to use the traditional braking system. Stegmaier informed me that throughout our test drive, the CLA electric vehicle prototype managed to operate without once resorting to the mechanical brakes. Quite remarkable.

Mercedes has stated that the energy is reintroduced to the usable 85.0-kWh battery pack via an 800-volt electrical system. The company has announced that the maximum fast-charging rate will reach 320 kW, allowing the CLA EV to gain an additional 186 miles of driving distance in just 10 minutes, starting from a 10% battery level. This equates to around 36 kWh of electrical energy. To boost the charge from 10% to 80%, it will require under 22 minutes. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with an 11.0-kWh onboard charger to facilitate Level 2 AC charging.

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

The 2026 CLA EV delivers a swift, cozy, and stable ride

As Stegmaier floored the accelerator, there was no tire spin. The prototype of the CLA EV surged ahead swiftly, though due to the environment, the engineer didn't maintain full throttle for an extended period. The vehicle stayed on its straight trajectory even on the slick terrain, with no noticeable pull on the steering wheel, suggesting that the car's electronic systems were dynamically modulating the power to suit the driving conditions.

Mercedes' latest prototype is equipped with the advanced EDU 2.0, which consists of sophisticated silicon-carbide inverters beneath its exterior. It features a powerful 268-horsepower rear motor coupled with a 107-horsepower motor at the front. During my experience, it was challenging to detect whether the front motor was active, yet considering the driving circumstances, it likely was in use frequently.

Mercedes hasn't disclosed specifics on performance, yet it's estimated that the acceleration from 0 to 60 mph could be achieved in just slightly over 4 seconds. Models with only one motor will likely have less speed, while the enhanced AMG versions are expected to be faster.

Aside from one hairpin turn where Stegmaier deliberately let the rear end slide, the sensation from the passenger's perspective was that the torque was managed well, largely due to the driver's gentle handling.

The freshly developed 2-speed automatic gearbox, created internally, possibly switched to second gear to make the torque output more gentle. This mechanism can maintain first gear until reaching 68 mph, although this can change depending on the situation and demands. The transition was seamless, and with the snowstorm, there was a great deal to process in a short amount of time.

The model tested featured a standard (non-adjustable) suspension system that delivered a smooth and stable ride. Stegmaier remained tight-lipped about the specifics and didn't indicate if the more premium or AMG versions would include adjustable suspension features. However, the model I experienced offered a ride that was equally, if not more, comfortable compared to the bigger C300 that I had recently driven.

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz Electric Vehicle sets a distinct path

Despite the camouflage on the CLA Electric Vehicle's exterior, its design unmistakably resembled the prototype that hinted at the upcoming generation of electric vehicles in 2023, including the star pattern in the LED headlights and taillights.

The interior surfaces, including the dashboard and door panels, were adorned with black fabric. Mercedes courteously requested that I refrain from discussing my limited observations or interactions. However, I can disclose that the dashboard appears to have undergone a total redesign compared to the current EQE and EQS models. The previous elevated, boat-style configuration has been eliminated. The dashboard now appears more compact and closely fitted near the windshield's base. It brought to mind the design elements characteristic of the Mercedes 190E and W126 S-Class from the 1980s and 90s, or even the present-day G-Class.

Mercedes refrained from granting me the opportunity to drive the CLA, and the duration of my interaction with it was short-lived. Nonetheless, my observations and impressions during that time clearly indicated that Mercedes is taking into account the critiques of its existing electric vehicles, is prioritizing energy-saving measures, and intends to position the 2026 CLA EV as the foundational model for its forthcoming lineup of electric vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz covered the expenses for transportation and accommodation, and they were surprised by my lack of chill amidst a snowstorm to provide you with this direct assessment.

Upcoming model: The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle introduces a new approach to regenerative braking

The forthcoming 2026 Mercedes CLA Electric Version offers genuine single-pedal operation

Mercedes emphasized on maximizing efficiency and the reclamation of energy in their CLA electric vehicle.

Mercedes has yet to announce the pricing for the 2026 CLA electric vehicle, which is set to be unveiled in 2025.

Until this point, numerous car manufacturers have opted to reduce the intensity of regenerative braking systems in electric vehicles, citing potential issues with maintaining control on slippery surfaces.

Mercedes-Benz is shifting its approach with its upcoming electric vehicles, introducing a new system in its future models, beginning with the CLA EV.

In a short test drive of a 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA electric vehicle prototype amid the Austrian Alps, Timo Stegmaier, who is the senior manager of Mercedes' electric drive systems, along with Tom Steller, a representative for the car manufacturer, showcased the upcoming electric vehicle's braking and propulsion capabilities under intense snowstorm circumstances.

Here's the insight I gained.

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA electric vehicle is designed with single-pedal operation in mind. The team behind the car has acknowledged that they have received significant input from both consumers and the press about the braking systems of the EQE and EQS electric vehicles, which have been criticized for their inconsistent and shifting friction points, as well as the unpredictable pedal sensation.

Initially, these brakes were among the least effective available, but they have reached a passable level thanks to software improvements. However, this will not apply to the CLA EV, as Mercedes engineers assured Green Car Reports in November that the vehicle's brake pedal will remain stationary until the driver applies pressure to it.

The CLA EV will offer three levels of regenerative braking: D-, D, and D+. Additionally, there will be an extra mode called D Auto. The most intense one-pedal regenerative braking is activated in D- mode, which was utilized throughout our entire test drive of the prototype, with the other modes providing progressively reduced regeneration.

The D Auto feature dynamically modifies the energy recovery braking mechanism based on the driving environment. Take the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E 53 Hybrid as an example, where this system is integrated with the adaptive cruise control and safety features for flexible operation. However, its performance isn't steady or foreseeable. At this point, it's not certain how the D Auto function operates within the CLA Electric Vehicle.

Prototype of the 2026 Electric Mercedes-Benz CLA

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

The winding mountain paths were enveloped in drifting snow atop a layer of hidden ice. Regardless of how swiftly Stegmaier engaged the sharpest regenerative braking setting with D-, easing off the gas pedal, the Michelin Alpin 5 winter tires appeared to maintain their grip effortlessly. The advanced MMA electric framework's power control units and engine control units powered the regenerative brakes, allowing for immediate responses and adaptations. The vehicle maintained a direct trajectory while decelerating and remained stable even when turning. It was quite remarkable, especially considering that many people can't manage this level of smoothness in such challenging conditions.

To clarify, the drive modes labeled as Snow, Winter, or those indicating Slippery Conditions found in the majority of electric vehicles available for purchase currently, often lessen or completely turn off the regenerative braking feature. This action is taken to prevent the wheels from losing grip and to maintain the vehicle's stability when driving on slick roads.

A representative from Mercedes informed GCR that the advice from Stegmaier to utilize the highest level of energy recovery during slick road conditions is tailored for the CLA electric vehicle due to its advanced sensor technology. The CLA's system is engineered to adapt on the fly to varying driving surfaces, ensuring immediate enhancement of both security and fuel economy. My personal experience confirmed that the system performed as described.

The EQE and EQS series are built on distinct foundations, with varying electronic frameworks, detection kits, as well as operating mechanisms and programming. The modern electric vehicles in this range have unique approaches to managing acceleration and deceleration dynamics and do not prioritize real-time optimization of energy recovery or overall performance efficiency.

The CLA has the capacity to recuperate 200 kilowatts before it needs to use the standard brakes. Stegmaier informed me that throughout our drive, the CLA electric vehicle prototype didn't once require the use of the conventional braking system. Quite remarkable.

The power is recirculated into the 85.0-kWh (usable) battery unit via an 800-volt electric system. According to Mercedes, the maximum speed for rapid charging is 320 kW, enabling the CLA EV to gain an additional 186 miles of driving distance in just 10 minutes, starting from a 10% charge level. This equates to roughly 36 kWh of power. To charge the battery from 10% to 80%, it will require less than 22 minutes. Additionally, there's an 11.0-kWh built-in charger designed for Level 2 AC charging.

The 2026 CLA EV delivers a fast, cozy, and stable driving experience

As Stegmaier pressed down hard on the gas pedal, the wheels maintained their grip without spinning out. The prototype of the CLA EV surged ahead swiftly, yet due to the driving circumstances, the engineer didn't maintain full throttle for an extended period. The vehicle stayed on its straight trajectory even on the slick terrain, and there was no noticeable jerkiness in the steering. It appeared that the vehicle's electronic systems were dynamically modulating power to suit the road conditions.

The prototype vehicle features a two-motor configuration with the latest version of Mercedes' electronic drive technology, EDU 2.0, which incorporates silicon-carbide inverters. A 268-horsepower synchronous motor operates at the rear, while the front is equipped with a motor generating 107 horsepower. It was difficult to detect whether the front motor was active, but considering the driving conditions, it likely was in use frequently.

Mercedes has remained silent on the specifics of the car's performance, yet it's estimated that the acceleration from 0 to 60 mph will likely be in the lower 4-second bracket. Models with only one motor will probably have reduced speeds, while the high-performance AMG variants are expected to be faster.

Aside from one hairpin turn where Stegmaier deliberately let the rear end drift, the sensation from the passenger side was that the driver maintained torque in check through gentle handling.

The company's latest creation, a 2-speed automatic gearbox, possibly engaged second gear to temper the torque output. This mechanism can maintain first gear until reaching 68 mph, although this can change depending on the situation and requirements. The transition was seamless, and considering the snowy conditions, there was a considerable amount to process in a short time.

The test model featured a standard suspension system that delivered a ride that was smooth, flexible, and stable. Stegmaier kept specifics under wraps and didn't specify if the upscale or AMG variants would come with adjustable shock absorbers. However, the test vehicle I experienced was equally, if not more, comfortable than the bigger C300 I had just driven.

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

Prototype of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Vehicle

The 2026 model of the Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle sets a distinctive path. Although the CLA EV's outer design was masked in camouflage, it unmistakably resembled the concept that was showcased as a preview of the upcoming generation electric vehicle in 2023, including the star patterns within the LED headlights and taillights.

The interior of the dashboard and doors was draped in a dark fabric. Mercedes courteously requested that I refrain from discussing the limited aspects I interacted with. However, I am able to mention that the dashboard appears to be a departure from the current design found in the EQE and EQS models. The previous elevated, boat-inspired structure seems to have been replaced. The new dashboard design appears more compact and closely fitted to the cowl, evoking the design sensibilities of the classic Mercedes 190E and W126 S-Class from the late 20th century, as well as the contemporary G-Class.

Mercedes refrained from allowing me to drive the CLA, and my engagement with the vehicle was short-lived. However, my observations and interactions during that time demonstrated that Mercedes is taking onboard criticisms of its existing electric vehicles, prioritizing energy-saving measures, and is intent on establishing the 2026 CLA electric vehicle as the foundation for its future line of electric models.

Mercedes-Benz covered the expenses for transportation and accommodation, and they were surprised that I didn't feel the chill amidst a snowstorm while providing you with this direct review.

Von der Vergangenheit zur Gegenwart: Die Triumphale Wiederbelebung des Porsche LMP 2000

Published

By

To enhance a more individual experience

Porsche LMP 2000 (1999): The Race Car that Never Graced Le Mans

Revived after 25 years, the prototype with just 78 kilometers on the odometer takes its initial laps…

Porsche has already accumulated 19 overall victories and over 100 class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. One more was anticipated in 2000 to follow up the triumph of the 911 GT1. However, as is often the case, things did not go as the participants had planned.

The LMP 2000 emerged as a fitting successor in the newly formed LMP900 class. It boasted a powerful 600 horsepower from a 5.5-liter V10 naturally aspirated engine, which was developed from Porsche's previous Formula 1 engines, and was housed in an open-cockpit monocoque design.

Photo Gallery: Porsche Revives the LMP 2000 Racing Car (1999)

During initial trials, the LMP 2000, weighing just under 900 kilograms, reached speeds of 302 km/h. However, after a mere 78 kilometers of testing in early November 1999, the project was halted. This promising race car was meant to demonstrate Porsche's capabilities at the time but was ultimately discontinued due to budget constraints.

The LMP 2000 never made it past the testing grounds at Weissach. Before it could even make its debut on the track, Porsche's leadership at the time, led by CEO Wendelin Wiedeking, decided to cancel the Le Mans project due to financial constraints. However, they allowed the race car to be completed and taken for a few laps. Allan McNish, who would later win Le Mans, drove the car for 60 kilometers before the project was shelved for over two decades.

The Porsche Heritage and Museum team recalls the brand-new prototype and decides to bring it back to life. They gradually make their way to the engine. The initial step involves firing up the engine for the first time in nearly 25 years, allowing its distinctive ten-cylinder sound to be heard once again.

The rebuilding process is expected to encounter significant challenges, particularly with the gearbox. To address this, the Porsche Formula E team is stepping in with assistance. "We managed to locate four control units and attempted to access them using an outdated computer," states Steffen Wolf, an engineer specializing in engine management systems. He highlights the difficulties in getting the gearshift paddles to communicate with the gearbox, saying, "We needed a control unit that could respond to the paddle signals on the steering wheel and engage the gears accordingly. Since we couldn't use the paddle shifting, we had to design a system that allows gear shifting to occur when the clutch is engaged."

The feat is accomplished; the racing car is operational and ready for its first rollout in 25 years. During the restoration, many former team members and Porsche associates reunite. Allan McNish, the same man behind the wheel 25 years ago, is present today. At 54, he has the privilege of driving the first laps on the 2.88-kilometer test track: "Incredible! It's as if I've traveled back in time by 25 years," exclaims the native Scotsman.

At the time, a young 18-year-old Timo Bernhard was just signing his contract as a Porsche Junior, and he was given the opportunity to take the car for a few spins. "When I saw the car, I imagined what it would be like to drive it one day," mentioned the future Le Mans champion. "It fills me with immense pride that 25 years later, I am able to do a few test laps with the race car."

In 2015, a Porsche triumphs once more at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, this time with the Porsche 919 Hybrid, which would go on to set a record at the Nürburgring. Among the team was Nico Hülkenberg, who formerly raced for Haas and would later join the Sauber and Audi teams.

BYD Sealion 7 (2024) im Fokus: Ein Raumwunder mit Hightech-Flair und persönlicher Note

To enhance a more individualized experience

BYD Sealion 7 (2024): A Peek Inside the Spacious Chinese SUV

The model's expansive wheelbase allows for a spacious interior, packed with advanced technology and high-quality craftsmanship…

The Sealion 7 is BYD's latest electric SUV coupe, built on the fresh 3.0 platform. It sports an impressive wheelbase of 2.93 meters, which accommodates the company's proprietary Blade batteries. This design choice results in an interior that is not only well-maintained but also technologically advanced. Here's a closer look at what it offers…

The Dashboard

As you might have gathered from our road test of the BYD Sealion 7, entering the vehicle is notably easy for passengers in both the front and back seats. This fresh SUV model boasts doors that open at expansive angles, offering easy entry to the cabin in various scenarios.

Photo Gallery: Test Drive of the 2024 BYD Sealion 7

Once you step inside, you're immediately immersed in a high-tech cockpit featuring a sleek dashboard that houses two screens: one serving as the instrument cluster and the other for the entertainment system, measuring 10.2 inches and 15.5 inches respectively. Remarkably, the central screen is rotatable, activated either by a button or voice command. Additionally, there are two wireless charging pads for smartphones, with one boasting a powerful 50-watt capacity.

What we're not too fond of is the fact that almost every setting in the BYD has to be adjusted via the touchscreen. Many features, such as seat or steering wheel heating, require navigating through two or more layers of the infotainment system. This can be distracting and doesn't quite align with our ideal vision of how to control a vehicle. However, the well-executed voice control system does offer some relief, although it takes some getting used to.

Materials and Craftsmanship

On board the BYD Sealion 7, the materials and construction are of high caliber, as noted during our test drive, especially in terms of the seats and door panels. The only drawback is the seating height, which gives one the impression of sitting atop rather than within the vehicle.

Generally, the interior is lined with soft-touch materials, paired with leather and rubberized textures. These quality finishes are also present in the back of the vehicle. Additionally, the rear boasts heated seating, ample legroom, generous head space, a 2.1 square meter panoramic sunroof, and USB-C ports.

BYD Sealion 7 (2024) features rear air vents.

In terms of the finer points, there's room for improvement in the manufacturing process, such as with the gaps and joints. However, the fact that there's less creaking when you jostle and press it compared to a brand-new electric Mercedes is quite telling.

Spaciousness and Cargo Area

The Sealion 7 boasts considerable space, measuring 4.83 meters in length, 1.93 meters in width, and 1.62 meters in height. As noted earlier, this applies to all the seating areas.

The BYD Sealion 7 offers a trunk capacity of 520 liters, which is standard for its class. The space can be increased to 1,789 liters by folding down the second row of seats. Additionally, all models of the Sealion 7 come with a front trunk (frunk) that holds 58 liters. A notable feature is the low loading edge, which makes it easy to load luggage.

Production Kick-Off for Mercedes-Benz Actros L

Is Daimler embracing technology openness? The combustion engine version appears identical to the electric variant…

Mercedes trucks are a staple on German roads. Yet, the iconic manufacturer must continually rise above growing competition. To stay ahead, MB Trucks is constantly upgrading its fleet. The inaugural vehicle from the Actros-L line has been delivered to a customer. This latest model not only boasts a futuristic design but also comes with several impressive specifications.

The commencement of production for the new Mercedes-Benz Actros L signifies another pivotal achievement for Mercedes-Benz Trucks. The inaugural customer vehicle of this latest model recently came off the assembly line at the Wörth plant on the Rhine, which is the company's most extensive truck assembly facility.

Photo Gallery: Mercedes Actros L to Begin Production in 2024

The Actros L 1848 LS 4×2, finished in "crystal green metallic," is the initial unit poised for delivery. Mercedes-Benz Trucks unveils the Actros L as a luxury model, aiming to redefine standards in safety, efficiency, and comfort.

A key feature of the latest Actros L is its aerodynamically enhanced "ProCabin" driver's cabin. The cabin's extended front section and additional aerodynamic improvements can lead to fuel savings of up to three percent. In addition to better aerodynamics, the Actros L is equipped with a range of technical advancements that elevate both driving comfort and efficiency.

The upgraded powertrain is designed to enhance the driving experience, especially when accelerating uphill, and allows for a quieter ride due to the lower cruising RPM at 80 km/h. These improvements not only make for a more enjoyable drive but also further reduce fuel consumption.

The Wörth factory, which has been operational since 1963, is a key hub for the manufacturing of Mercedes-Benz Trucks. With approximately 10,000 staff members, it stands as the second-largest employer in the Rhineland-Palatinate region. The facility produces not only the Actros but also the Arocs, Atego, and special-purpose vehicles such as the Econic, Unimog, and Zetros.

Over recent years, the factory has scaled up its production capabilities to include battery-electric vehicles such as the eActros 300/400 and the eEconic. Additionally, it has recently launched mass production of the eActros 600, aimed at long-distance haulage. It's worth noting that, visually, these electric versions are almost indistinguishable from their traditional counterparts.

Discover more about the Actros:

The plant's adaptable manufacturing approach allows for the assembly of a range of powertrains – from diesel to battery electric – on a single production line. This flexibility facilitates swift adjustments to market demand while maintaining the high-quality benchmarks set by Mercedes-Benz.

Revitalized for the Road: How Varied Charging Might Extend EV Battery Life, Stanford Study Reveals

Published

on

By

The lifespan of electric vehicle batteries may be extended through diverse charging and usage routines. While fresh chemical compositions and designs for EV batteries are regularly in the works, recent research emphasizes the need to evaluate them in practical scenarios.

A new study featured in Nature Energy, conducted by a team from Stanford University in collaboration with experts from the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, offers insights into extending battery life. This research, initially highlighted by Electrek, builds upon a 2022 project by the same team that proposed a method for rejuvenating lithium-ion batteries. By modifying how the batteries are charged, it was suggested that their lifespan could be increased by up to 30%.

Assembly of Audi batteries at the factory in Brussels, Belgium.

Research of this nature typically employs repetitive rounds of charging and discharging at a consistent pace. It's presumed that the primary cause of battery wear and tear is the frequency of these cycles, suggesting that this method is the most direct approach to test the endurance of battery cells.

In this research, scientists examined four different patterns of battery usage, varying from steady output to those that mimic actual driving scenarios, including quick spurts of speed. They conducted these tests on 92 lithium-ion batteries available in the market over a period of two years.

Cylindrical battery cells for electric vehicles by Panasonic

Investigators discovered that battery profiles displaying greater fluctuation in the release of energy contributed to an extended battery lifespan, possibly extending it by as much as 38%. This finding could aid in the creation of improved testing methods for future batteries, as well as inform potential regulations concerning battery wear and tear.

The research indicates that adopting different driving habits can potentially extend the life of batteries in electric vehicles, which is a positive development. Additionally, there are straightforward strategies to consider for reducing battery wear and tear, such as opting to park vehicles in cooler, shaded areas or indoors during hot weather.

Chevrolet Equinox EV: The Budget-Friendly Family SUV Finalist for Green Car Reports’ Best Car To Buy 2025

Published

on

By

The Chevy Equinox EV has secured a spot as a finalist for Green Car Reports' Best Car To Buy in 2025, demonstrating that budget-conscious families can switch from their gas-powered cars to a fully electric option without sacrificing features or comfort, and at a cost that matches its gasoline counterpart.

A limited number of Equinox EVs rolled out during a short-lived 2024 model year, but our attention is on 2025. That's when the more affordable Equinox EV LT hits the market, priced from $34,995, destination charges included. This model comes equipped with an 85-kWh battery pack and has an EPA-estimated range of 319 miles.

Currently, the 2025 Chevy Equinox EV is an incredible bargain since the starting models and the entire range are eligible for the maximum $7,500 electric vehicle tax incentive. This reduces the actual cost to a mere $27,495 for the LT version.

2025 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

This vehicle offers substantial value, providing not only a significant amount of electric vehicle for the cost but also a generous amount of automobile in general. Every model comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety technologies, an automated temperature regulation system, the ability to connect to wifi hotspots, an advanced adaptive cruise control, a sound system with six speakers, and an impressively large 17.7-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system that can handle almost all tasks, although it does not integrate seamlessly with smartphones via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Choosing the Comfort Package adds an additional $2,000 to your bill, but it includes amenities such as warming features for both the seats and steering wheel, along with an adjustable power seat for the driver. Furthermore, the package offers an advanced HD camera system for a comprehensive view around the vehicle, alerts for pedestrians behind the car, among other features. For an added $1,500, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof can be included. Additionally, General Motors offers a bundle for $3,355 that comprises a three-year subscription to their Super Cruise hands-free driving system as well as an upgraded feature for assisting with automatic parking.

The entry-level LT models of the Equinox EV, which feature front-wheel drive, deliver a performance of 220 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. These models are the most affordable option, priced at $34,995. On the other hand, the dual-motor versions that come with all-wheel drive offer a heftier output of 300 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque, but come with a higher starting price of $40,295.

Upcoming 2025 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

2025 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

Upcoming 2025 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

2025 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

Chevrolet is promoting the Equinox EV as a sport utility vehicle, however, in essence, it’s more akin to a station wagon. Stretching to a length of 190.6 inches, the Equinox EV closely mirrors the dimensions and contour (with the exception of the extended wheelbase that's typical of contemporary electric vehicles) of the Chevy Celebrity wagon from the 1980s, though it does offer a more elevated seat arrangement.

Despite not fully grasping the cause, our direct comparison during the Best Car To Buy evaluations in Georgia this past October revealed that the Equinox EV offers a more straightforward entrance and exit experience than its relative, the Chevrolet Blazer EV. Additionally, it provides superior rear seating area for a majority of circumstances. By folding the rear seats of the Equinox EV, the available space increases from 26.4 cubic feet to an ample 57 cubic feet.

To ensure the financial viability of their plans, GM must be mindful of their spending. During our direct testing experience with various electric vehicles, it became clear that there is less emphasis on reducing road noise. Additionally, the quality of interior finishes and the overall atmosphere inside the vehicle fall short of expectations, with a dated feel reminiscent of GM's earlier models from the start of the 2000s.

2025 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

Additionally, it's important to note that the Equinox EV doesn't excel in charging or energy efficiency. Take the Lucid Air Pure as an example; it can travel over 100 miles more on a single charge despite having a marginally smaller battery. However, the Chevy can charge from 10% to 80% in just over half an hour, which is certainly adequate for long drives. This also means you can enjoy a few upscale meals during charging breaks, thanks to the savings from its cost. Plus, it's designed to work with GM's range of energy products, giving you the option to use the vehicle's large battery as a backup power source for your home if you choose.

2025 Model of the Chevrolet Equinox Electric Vehicle

In conclusion, there's a definite need for an increase in such offerings. The Equinox EV emerges as a cost-effective option in the electric vehicle market, which is currently lacking. It also somewhat lives up to the initial hype surrounding GM's Ultium technology, despite a slight scaling back of their original plan.

Is the Chevy Equinox EV going to surpass the other contenders for the title of Best Car To Buy 2025? Find out on January 6th.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Unveils First Ground-Up Electric SUV Prototype for Extreme Arctic Testing

Published

on

By

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a sneak peek on Thursday, showcasing a disguised version of its exclusive electric SUV designed for the AMG performance branch.

AMG, known for enhancing Mercedes models for a more athletic performance, has similarly upgraded some of the brand's electric offerings. It has also introduced unique models such as the existing GT coupe available in both two and four-door options, the SL Roadster, and the no longer produced SLS AMG sports car. However, this upcoming SUV will be the first to be entirely conceived as an AMG creation, representing one of two electric vehicles envisioned to be built on the fresh AMG.EA architecture.

Sneak peek at Mercedes-Benz AMG's independent electric SUV model.

The early models reveal that the sophisticated outline presented in a drawing at the time of the AMG electric SUV's introduction last month wasn't overstated. Even though this is an electric vehicle, which has distinct cooling needs compared to traditional gas-powered vehicles, it seems AMG has also incorporated a sizeable grille on the front, accompanied by a hood and headlights that curve around it.

Mercedes has verified that the SUV's testing phase will commence as planned. The vehicle is en route to the Arctic Circle to undergo tests in cold conditions, similar to the initial AMG.EA-based electric vehicle's tests conducted there in the recent spring. The previous model, a fastback sedan potentially set to succeed the existing AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, is expected to hit the market next year. The SUV is anticipated to launch at a later date following the sedan.

Initial model of an all-electric vehicle completely engineered by Mercedes-Benz AMG has been created.

The upcoming vehicles are expected to be equipped with axial-flux motors provided by the UK-based company Yasa, a business that Mercedes took over in 2021. Additionally, Mercedes hinted at an innovative "high-performance battery concept" but did not elaborate. This could be a reference to their technology that supports electric vehicle batteries comprising various types of cells.

Besides the pair of established AMG.EA variants, a previous report from this year hinted at AMG contemplating the creation of an electric high-performance car inspired by the Vision One-Eleven prototype presented in 2023. It's also anticipated that an AMG-adapted version of the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA EV will be introduced.

BMW's M division unveiled on Wednesday sneak peeks of a prototype that is likely the anticipated electric version of the M3 sports sedan, presumably equipped with a quad-motor setup.

The performance sector of BMW took to Instagram to share images of a disguised four-door car, which features the distinctive wide wheel arches seen on the test models for BMW's future electric vehicles with four motors. It's plausible that the iconic M3 emblem, revered in BMW's history, could grace a vehicle equipped with this pioneering quad-motor setup.

In a discussion held earlier this year, the head of BMW's M division, Frank van Meel, announced the electric version of the BMW M3, claiming it will surpass all expectations.

It has been learned that the M3 is among the various electric M models currently being crafted by BMW. This vehicle will join the lineup of BMW's upcoming Neue Klasse series of electric vehicles. The new collection will feature advancements such as tubular battery cells and a high-power 800-volt electrical system. BMW has announced that these enhancements will result in a 30% improvement in charging times and an increase of up to 30% in mileage range when compared to their existing electric vehicles.

The upcoming electric M3 might include faux gear shifting and manufactured engine noises that respond to the driver's actions, echoing the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N's features. In another discussion, van Meel mentioned that BMW is developing this technology and expressed his agreement with Hyundai's implementation strategy.

High-performance versions such as the M3 are anticipated to be introduced after the initial launch of the Neue Klasse lineup. BMW began pre-production of the first SUVs in the Neue Klasse range at their Debrecen facility in Hungary a week ago. The manufacturing for consumer vehicles is slated for the end of 2025. Subsequently, BMW aims to escalate production at its primary factory in Munich, Germany, and intends to commence production in Mexico by 2027.
