Verstappen Sounds Alarm on Red Bull’s F1 Title Hopes: Calls for Drastic Changes to ‘Undriveable’ Car
Max Verstappen Acknowledges Double F1 Championship Hopes Dim Without Major Red Bull Overhaul
Max Verstappen confesses that Red Bull's chances at clinching both Formula 1 championships could be in jeopardy unless they significantly revamp their vehicle.
Max Verstappen has expressed his opinion that securing either of the F1 world championships appears "unrealistic" due to Red Bull's car, which he describes as "undriveable" and has morphed into a "monster."
Following a lackluster seventh-place qualification, Verstappen ended up in sixth place at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on Sunday, witnessing his lead in the championship diminish to 62 points with eight more races to go. This came after Lando Norris of McLaren secured third place and recorded the race's fastest lap.
McLaren has significantly closed the gap on Red Bull in the constructors' championship, now trailing by a mere eight points.
"Right now, winning either championship seems out of reach," Verstappen stated.
"I've expressed my thoughts quite extensively, and it's now in the hands of our team to implement significant modifications to the vehicle. Remarkably, we've transitioned from having a supremely dominant vehicle to one that's virtually impossible to handle in just six to eight months. This situation is quite baffling to me, and it's clear we need to thoroughly overhaul the car."
"Regardless of our current position, we're struggling in all areas, thus significant alterations are necessary."
Verstappen emphasized that Red Bull must make significant changes to their RB20, transitioning from possessing the most superior car in F1's history to what he referred to as a "monster."
"Last year, our car was incredibly dominant, arguably the most ever, and we essentially transformed it into a beast. Now, we need to reverse that."
"We must continue to strive and give it our all, regardless of the time frame. There are no justifications."
Christian Horner, the team principal for Red Bull, acknowledged that his team needs to quickly address their current challenges to prevent facing significant pressure in both championships.
"Horner stated, "Given today's speed, both championships will definitely feel the heat."
"We need to swiftly change the current circumstances. It appears that this track has revealed the shortcomings our car has compared to the previous year, and there's a specific problem that has become very apparent over this weekend."
"We are aware that we must confront and tackle this issue, or else we will subject ourselves to immense strain."
