Vasseur Downplays Leclerc-Sainz Friction at Spanish GP, Asserts Team Unity Amidst Performance Struggles
Frederic Vasseur dismisses rising tension between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz
Frederic Vasseur responds to Charles Leclerc's accusation that Carlos Sainz was the reason he finished fourth in Barcelona.
Ferrari Formula 1 team leader Frederic Vasseur has waved off inquiries regarding the growing strain between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz during the Spanish Grand Prix.
Leclerc and Sainz appeared to be engaged in a heated conversation following the race, observed within the parc ferme area.
The driver from Monaco was irritated by Sainz's maneuver to pass him during the initial laps of the competition.
Leclerc believed that conserving their tyres was the strategy both drivers should adhere to, a plan that had been agreed upon prior to the race. Conversely, Sainz was inclined towards a more aggressive approach, aiming to capitalize on the advantage of having fresh soft tyres.
Following the competition, Leclerc took a jab at Sainz for attempting to stand out in his home country, and considering the circumstances surrounding his contract, it's understandable that his colleague aimed to leave an impression.
Sainz responded by asserting that Leclerc often protests excessively, following Leclerc's comments over the team radio that their recent duel caused him to lose valuable time in overtaking George Russell on the last lap.
Sharing his perspective on the matter, Vasseur spoke to the press in Barcelona, stating, "In my view, there are at least ten instances during the race where we fell short by just half a tenth."
"In a brief moment, apologies, or the instances following, when Carlos released him without much effort, subsequently."
"We fell short by a few tenths over two or three laps. Let's talk it over and avoid making a judgment based on the driver's initial reaction right after getting out of the car."
The weekend proved to be a letdown for Ferrari, which found itself in third place in terms of speed after introducing a new enhancement at the Barcelona race.
Although Vasseur's speed on the track hasn't been remarkable, he is pleased with the improvements being achieved.
"Indeed, we're content with the figures we're seeing," he continued. "Primarily, there's improvement across the board. This implies not necessarily that introducing something new propels you forward but rather that failing to innovate results in falling behind."
"Now, everyone contributes pieces for every couple of events. At times, there's an inventory of our publications, but it primarily focuses on the aerodynamics aspect. Remember, our development extends beyond just aerodynamics."
"Occasionally, we might require one or two prior occurrences to fully leverage the capabilities of our package. Over the past year, we've observed a harmonization in our performance levels."
