U.S. Trade Chief Tai Supports Canada’s New Tariffs on Chinese EVs and Metals Amid Fair Trade Concerns
U.S. Trade Representative Tai praises Canada's significant new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and metals
Tai commended Canada for addressing China's 'unfair' non-market practices. The new tariffs will be enforced starting October 1.
On Thursday, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai expressed solid support for Canada's move to implement a 100 percent tariff on electric vehicles manufactured in China, and a 25 percent tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum, as she wraps up plans for similar U.S. tariffs.
In an announcement from her office, Tai commended Canada for its decisive measures against China’s "government-led, unjust, and anti-competitive non-market policies and practices that jeopardize our market-based industries."
"Tai expressed alignment with Canada's worries regarding the People's Republic of China's unjust, non-competitive economic policies and practices, along with its lack of commitment to labor rights, environmental enforcement, and fostering of fair, market-driven competition," Tai said, referring to the country by its official acronym, PRC.
