Toto Wolff Addresses Speculation Around Mercedes Potentially Supplying Engines to Alpine from 2026
Toto Wolff addresses speculation about Mercedes providing Alpine with Formula 1 engines
"Currently, Alpine is considering a variety of options."
Toto Wolff has spoken about the rumors regarding Mercedes possibly providing F1 engines to Alpine starting in 2026, stating that the French team is "investigating various options."
According to The Race, Alpine is contemplating abandoning their engine project for 2026, potentially leading them to become a customer team instead.
The speculation is intriguing because it implies that Alpine might give up their status as a factory team.
Since the current regulations were implemented in 2014, Renault has faced challenges in producing a robust engine.
Facing the implementation of new engine regulations in 2026, they are at a crossroads regarding their decision.
Former McLaren icon Ron Dennis once stated that winning a world championship as a customer team was unfeasible, leading to their decision to partner with Honda starting in 2015 instead of continuing with Mercedes.
Nonetheless, under Zak Brown's leadership, McLaren's switch back to Mercedes engines hasn't hindered them, as the team based in Woking has reliably been the runner-up in the Formula 1 standings.
During an exclusive interview with Sky F1, Wolff discussed the ongoing speculations surrounding Alpine, stating, "Currently, Alpine is investigating various strategies. It's apparent that their management is dissatisfied with how they're performing."
"In Formula 1, the situation can change rapidly. Just three races back, Alpine found itself in a position to seek new possibilities."
"However, when you observe Barcelona and Austria, their performance appears significantly improved. Thus, it's possible that the issue isn't solely with the engine."
Mercedes has openly expressed optimism about their prospects for success in 2026, aiming to replicate their achievements from ten years prior.
Their belief might serve as the pivotal factor in possibly bringing Max Verstappen on board with the team down the line, considering how crucial a powerful engine is under the new regulations.
Yet, upon evaluating the entire set of rules, Wolff admits they “don’t appear overly impressive.”
He further commented, "Currently, the rules aren't exactly impressive," he said. "However, they are still evolving. I'm really hopeful that the decision-makers at the FIA will take into account the teams' inputs, and that we can all work together to develop rules that enhance the sport's appeal. That's the key. The teams are key participants, as are the fans watching."
