Toprak Razgatlioglu’s MotoGP Dilemma: Should He Leap Before 2027?
Is it time for Toprak Razgatlioglu to switch to MotoGP before 2027?
Currently dominating the World Superbike rankings with BMW, is it advisable for Toprak Razgatlioglu to accelerate his MotoGP dreams?
On Sunday, Toprak Razgatlioglu achieved an impressive clean sweep of wins at Misano, becoming the first BMW racer to top the WorldSBK rankings since 2012.
Could it also accelerate his aspirations in MotoGP?
At the beginning of the year, Razgatlioglu made it known, stating, "Securing the Superbike championship could pave my way into competing in MotoGP by 2026, and that's a possibility I'm open to."
There's speculation that BMW is contemplating joining MotoGP once the technical regulations shift to 850cc engines in 2027, and the idea of Razgatlioglu transferring alongside them is viewed as an ideal situation.
Considering Razgatlioglu's recent performance, Jordan Moreland, the host of the Crash.net MotoGP podcast, inquired whether the Turkish racer, who had a varied outcome in his Yamaha M1 test last year, might be contemplating a change sooner rather than later.
"His performance over the weekend on Ducati's own ground was remarkable – the control he demonstrated and his adaptation to the BMW this year," commented Superbike journalist Robert Jones.
"Indeed, it appears that BMW has taken significant strides to position itself among the leading motorcycles. However, the other riders on BMW bikes still haven't reached the level of performance showcased by Toprak."
Toprak has hinted that there might be a clause in his contract allowing for an early move to MotoGP, suggesting that he's open to offers.
"However, considering his current trajectory with BMW, he has the potential to secure three more world championships before possibly transitioning to MotoGP alongside BMW in 2027."
"Clearly, being 27 years old is a significant factor in MotoGP. However, his skills are undeniable. It would be ideal for him to remain in his current position and then aim to progress to MotoGP, joining BMW, a team with which he's very familiar. This would benefit everyone involved."
MotoGP commentator Pete McLaren stated, “To me, it reminds me of Rossi's debut year with Yamaha, where he was able to jump on a motorcycle considered not top-tier and instantly compete at a high level with it.
It would be truly regrettable if he missed the opportunity to compete in MotoGP. Rob has shed light on the connection with BMW, yet if he were to secure the championship for BMW this season and then immediately make the move to MotoGP, one wonders where he could potentially end up?
Jorge Martin's front-running position at Pramac Ducati is presently available, though it's likely to be filled soon. Kenan Sofuoglu has emphasized that Toprak requires a factory MotoGP seat in any case.
"Thus, when considering squads such as Repsol Honda… From Honda's perspective, seizing the opportunity to recruit Toprak would undoubtedly be a wise move!"
Toprak has demonstrated not just his natural ability, but also the skill and drive necessary to improve a bike that's not performing well. Moreover, he's willing to tackle challenging projects, particularly when he's accompanied by his outstanding crew chief, Phil Marron.
"For Honda, he would be the ideal candidate, especially if Mir departs. A person who would arrive with a strong appetite and view the situation as an opportunity to start fresh."
"Luca Marini is already on board as the seasoned, insightful rider, capable of providing the engineers with detailed feedback on how the Honda performs differently from the Ducati, among others. So, why not bring in someone else whose focus will be purely on pushing the bike to its limits?"
According to Rob, it might be most advantageous to wait and eventually transition to BMW. However, should Toprak secure the Superbike championship for them immediately, following his 2021 victory with Yamaha, the question arises: Does he need to keep pursuing the title repeatedly, or is it wiser to advance to MotoGP sooner rather than later?
The query raises a fascinating point. Marini’s current agreement is set to conclude by the close of 2025, which means, should Toprak remain in WorldSBK for the upcoming season, Honda could potentially be the sole factory MotoGP team with an available spot for 2026.
Jones further commented, "Why wouldn't Honda consider it?" He continued, "Moreover, if Toprak switched to Honda, his lack of prior experience in MotoGP might actually be beneficial for him. It's not as though he's transitioning from an exceptional MotoGP motorcycle to the least competitive one in the lineup."
"However, should BMW consider reuniting with Toprak for a MotoGP endeavor in 2027, securing a high-performing satellite position with a team such as Pramac could serve as a viable strategy for a year or two. The only challenge would be persuading Kenan!"
"Taking on Honda would be a gamble for the coming year," Moreland expressed. "Currently, you're leading in WorldSBK. You represent BMW. You're on a winning streak. And then, if you switch to Honda, you'll find yourself with considerably less television exposure, and you'll have to exert a lot more effort physically since the Honda is notoriously difficult to handle. It's constantly trying to buck you off. For me, it's a significant gamble."
"He seems to appreciate the atmosphere in WorldSBK too. It's more relaxed, and the schedule isn't as packed, providing him with larger intervals to spend time at home and enjoy various activities, which is evident from his Instagram posts.
"I hope he continues competing in World Superbike for several more years."
McLaren noted, “Another point of interest is that due to Honda’s entitlement to concessions, they have the opportunity to conduct extensive private testing to become accustomed to a MotoGP bike, a benefit that European manufacturers currently do not have."
"This might benefit Toprak should he decide to make a move before 2027, though currently, it's all hypothetical and uncertain."
Moreland stated, "It's a consensus that Toprak is a legend in the World Superbike arena. He's a major attraction. In my view, BMW has really hit the jackpot, and it'll be interesting to see if they join forces in MotoGP down the line."
