Tech3 Reunites with KTM for 2025 MotoGP: A Strategic Move for Unified Excellence
Why is Tech3 transitioning from GASGAS to KTM for the 2025 MotoGP season?
Pit Beirer, the director of KTM motorsports, sheds light on why Tech3 will be donning orange again for the 2025 MotoGP season.
Following two years competing under the GASGAS name, Tech3 will align with the factory team by adopting Red Bull KTM livery for the 2025 MotoGP season.
What prompted the shift?
The aim was to establish a clear visual difference between the KTM factory team and Tech3, in order to dispel the perception of Tech3 being a secondary team and to promote the Pierer Mobility Group’s new GASGAS brand.
Despite KTM's promise to provide factory-spec bikes to all their riders, highlighted by GASGAS newcomer Pedro Acosta who is currently the top-performing RC16 rider, the mixed branding has led to some bewilderment.
KTM's motorsport director, Pit Beirer, clarified that the objective is to ensure that the Tech3 team, which will welcome new riders Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini next season, has bikes that are identical to those of the factory team.
The entire setup will feature orange, as our aspiration remains to have four factory riders. We aim to eliminate any distinctions between different garages, so that the riders won't mind choosing any of the four available spots.
“With Herve, we have an exceptional collaborator whom we trust completely, as if he were part of our own group. Therefore, we don't see it as 'his team, our team'.”
"Pedro played a significant role in demonstrating the capabilities of our Tech3 team. He helped prove that it operates at a full factory level, offering a complete opportunity for performance. I believe that without Pedro's influence, we might not have been able to persuade Vinales and Bastianini to join us."
Beirer suggested that the choice to concentrate solely on KTM was made due to business considerations and mentioned that Red Bull supported having four riders.
Bierer commented that they have successfully generated significant publicity for GASGAS. Despite being the newest addition to their brand lineup, the efforts of Pedro and Jorge Prado in motocross have helped make GASGAS widely recognized globally.
"On the other hand, we chose to fully dedicate ourselves to KTM. The market is currently experiencing a challenging period, and I often find it problematic for our project when conversing with a top rider. They frequently ask, 'Is it the GASGAS or the KTM? What distinguishes the two bikes?'"
In conclusion, we realized that although showcasing various brands was enjoyable, the project would be most successful if it featured a team of four riders, all under the Red Bull KTM banner.
“I am very grateful that Red Bull, our partner, continues to support us in this initiative and views it as a team effort involving four riders.”
In the beginning, they viewed it more as a team with two riders, similar to a factory setup. However, now they've agreed to move forward with all four riders. They decided to collectively choose the riders they want to include and support. As a result, all four riders will have access to the Red Bull Training Center and benefit fully from the rider support package.
"The decision was made to enhance the overall package and avoid having to explain the reasoning behind each aspect. This approach clarifies the roles for everyone, including the engineers supporting both teams. Now, there's no confusion as to why certain elements are found in one garage versus the other."
“Everyone already recognizes that it's us. Therefore, we decided it might be a good time to reveal that it's all our doing, and it's orange.”
Beirer was asked about recent statements made by Hubert Trunkenpolz, who mentioned that KTM plans to introduce the MV Agusta brand into MotoGP using Tech3, by making alterations to some RC16s when the technical regulations are updated in 2027.
Bierer mentioned that he had overheard Mr. Trunkenpolz, a member of the board, make that statement and indicated that he would defer to him.
“In the near future, no one has advised us to switch to a different brand for MotoGP. Therefore, our race department currently has a clear objective.”
