Sebastian Vettel Spearheads Emotional Ayrton Senna Tribute at Imola with F1 Community
Sebastian Vettel spearheaded a heartfelt homage to Ayrton Senna at Imola on Thursday, joined by all Formula 1 drivers.
Quadruple Formula 1 champion Sebastian Vettel organized a run around the Imola circuit on Thursday to honor the memory of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger on the 30th anniversary of their passing.
On Thursday, during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Vettel, marking his first appearance in the F1 paddock since last year in Japan, along with the Senna foundation, arranged a gathering on the track.
Formula 1 racers such as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were in attendance alongside several Formula 2 and Formula 3 drivers, team leaders, and assorted press members.
Most were captured wearing t-shirts commemorating Senna, three decades after his fatal accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
In addition to the snapshot taken on the start-finish line, Vettel spearheaded a lap around the renowned Imola circuit under wet weather conditions.
The staff then participated in an additional tribute at Tamburello, the notorious site of Senna's crash in 1994.
For this weekend's race, Pierre Gasly will be wearing a helmet inspired by Senna from the existing lineup.
Following his victory at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, the champion had the chance to pilot Senna's inaugural F1 vehicle – the Toleman from 1984.
During the FIA press briefing, Gasly expressed: "He's been my idol since my childhood. Naturally, being from France, I was constantly surrounded by stories of Alain Prost, the most accomplished French F1 racer in history.
"Clearly, whenever Alain was mentioned, Ayrton's name followed. I've seen numerous documentaries and, in my opinion, their rivalry stands out as the most legendary in the history of Formula 1. I've always had respect for, I must admit, not just their approach to racing, but also for the kind of individuals they were – their principles, and their concern for their community."
"Indeed, he's a leading figure in our sport and I felt it was crucial to honor him, particularly this year, marking 30 years since the event. Paying homage to one of the greatest ever was significant to me."
