Red Bull’s Dilemma: Sergio Perez’s Contract Under Scrutiny Amidst Poor Performances and Ricciardo’s Rising Threat
Sergio Perez has been cautioned with the question: “Do contracts hold any real value?”
“If Daniel consistently delivers impressive results and Checo fails to do so…"
Sergio Perez has been cautioned that his recent contract with Red Bull won't shield him from consequences if his performance levels drop.
Perez concluded the heated discussion regarding Red Bull's 2025 roster by signing an extension to his contract, which was set to end this year.
Despite a disappointing performance at the F1 Canadian Grand Prix last weekend, he has been cautioned that competitors such as Daniel Ricciardo remain potential candidates to take his place.
On the F1 Nation podcast, Natalie Pinkham expressed her surprise at how swiftly the decision to re-sign Perez was made public.
"It seems to be effective for Max Verstappen. There might be some undisclosed activities happening in the background…"
"There’s no question that Sergio is an excellent driver."
Tom Clarkson responded by saying, "He was not in Montreal!"
Pinkham added, “He wasn’t. It’s unfortunate because you would expect that securing a new contract would give him a confidence boost and help him unwind.”
Sergio, similar to many other drivers, performs optimally when he is calm and free from concerns, allowing him to act instinctively.
"If Daniel consistently delivers impressive performances and Checo does not, can we really say these contracts hold any value?"
"I don't think so. They would figure out a solution."
"Similarly, it's not shocking that Daniel has not been reinstated to the team."
He has acknowledged that his season's beginning hasn't been very strong.
The Miami sprint, along with both the qualifications and the race in Montreal, clearly demonstrate that he still possesses all of his skill.
Clarkson stated that they will closely monitor Perez's development.
The last three races have been challenging for him, which aligns with Red Bull's least competitive showings this year.
As the car becomes harder to handle, the distance between Checo and Max increases.
"When we head to Barcelona, the vehicle's performance will improve and Checo will be nearer."
"And if it turns out he isn't? That's when we'll have to start asking questions."
Perez failed to qualify in Canada, resulting in a disappointing 13th place on the starting grid.
He was unable to complete the grand prix last Sunday due to a collision with the Turn 6 barriers.
To make a bad weekend even worse (during which his teammate Verstappen secured a victory), Perez received a grid penalty for the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix because he remained on the circuit too long with a damaged car.
