The Battle of High-Roofed MPVs: Ford Tourneo Courier Takes on Dacia Jogger

We're putting two versatile vehicles head-to-head, examining their dimensions, features, engines, and prices …

While SUVs may be the current trend, for long distance family trips with plenty of luggage, traditional high-roofed MPVs are hard to beat. Vehicles like the Ford Tourneo Courier and Dacia Jogger offer exceptional adaptability. Their distinctive designs and spacious trunks make them attractive options for those in need of a multipurpose vehicle. Let's delve into the comparison…

The Size and Style

The latest iteration of the Tourneo Courier, recently unveiled, measures 4.34 meters in length, 1.87 meters in width, and stands 1.82 meters tall, sporting a more angular look than its predecessors. Ford's new model boasts a robust appearance, featuring a prominent front grille and layered headlamps. The vehicle's bold sides and contrasting roof lead to an aerodynamic rear end with vertical lights and a low loading threshold. The cargo capacity starts at 570 liters, expanding up to 2,162 liters.

Ford's compact van offering, the

Dacia's New Family Model

In contrast to the Ford, the Dacia has a more traditional appearance, particularly at the front where it resembles a car a bit more closely. It also comes equipped with LED headlights. Its profile is characterized by a pronounced rear end, which features vertically positioned tail lights.

The dimensions of the vehicle show clear variations when compared to the relatively short Ford. The Jogger has a length of 4.55 meters, a modest width of 1.78 meters, and stands significantly lower at a height of 1.63 meters. The wheelbase is also exceptionally long, stretching to an impressive 2.90 meters.

The Interior

The interior of the latest Tourneo Courier has undergone a complete overhaul. At the heart of the dashboard is the SYNC 4 multimedia system, which manages navigation, entertainment, and connectivity. It all operates through an 8-inch touch screen that wirelessly supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The digital dashboard display provides all the essential details about the vehicle, and the technical features include wireless smartphone charging, USB ports, and a built-in phone holder in the dashboard.

The Interior of the Dacia Jogger

The interior of the Jogger has been designed with budget considerations in mind, leading to a more modest level of high-tech features. Even the premium versions come with basic analog gauges behind the steering wheel and just a small screen in between. However, there is an 8-inch infotainment system on the center console.

The dashboard is minimally equipped with controls, yet, similar to the Ford, it offers an array of storage compartments. Additionally, the materials used in the Dacia are of a more basic quality. However, the model is available for purchase with an option of up to seven seats.

Engines and Performance

The Ford Tourneo Courier comes solely with a combustion engine, featuring a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder Ecoboost that delivers 125 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. Power is directed to the front wheels only, and customers can select from either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed DSG Powershift automatic.

Regardless of the transmission selected, the maximum speed is constant at 175 km/h. However, the manual model takes 13.0 seconds to reach 100 km/h, while the automatic version achieves it in 11.1 seconds.

Dacia's New Model: The

Dacia's range of options is quite extensive. The base model is the ECO-G 100, which features a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine capable of producing 101 horsepower and can run on either gasoline or LPG. Above that is the TCe110, which also has a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine but delivers 110 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. Both engines are only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

The premier model is known as the HYBRID 140, featuring a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor. This combination delivers a total system output of 141 horsepower, transmitted through an automatic multimode transmission. Note that all Jogger variants are solely available with front-wheel drive, and there are no diesel options.

Porsche’s Electric Shift: Why the Upcoming 718 Boxster EV Says No to One-Pedal Driving

Published

on

By

Porsche has decided against incorporating one-pedal driving in its electric vehicles, a decision that will continue with the upcoming electric replacements for the gasoline-powered 718 Boxster and Cayman sports cars.

Porsche's head of research and development, Michael Steiner, emphasized the importance of enhancing the driver's command and assurance during a conversation with Autocar.

Steiner expressed that every race driver would opt for separate pedals for recuperation and braking, aiming for the smoothest control. He emphasized that a proper pedal response is crucial for drivers to feel confident about their car's stability while navigating turns.

2025 Model of Porsche 718

Porsche has adopted a policy where, as demonstrated in the Taycan and Macan Electric models, it utilizes regenerative braking exclusively through the brake pedal. The car manufacturer maintains that this method is more effective as it optimizes the conservation of kinetic energy during slowing down. Steiner emphasized this perspective, noting that this technique allows drivers to have more command and perception of the vehicle's operation.

Steiner explained that when the entire braking system is linked to the brake pedal, it allows the person behind the wheel to adjust the pressure as required, and also to sense the feedback from the road surface, the steering response, and other factors. This gives the driver the ability to manage the vehicle using both the brakes and the accelerator, which, in their opinion, surpasses a system that operates beyond the driver's command.

Porsche's Visionary Mission R

Unveiled in 2022, with an expected launch in 2025 for the 2026 lineup, Porsche's 718 Boxster convertible and Cayman coupe will succeed their petrol-based versions as the introductory models in Porsche's range of sports cars.

Earlier captured images reveal that the new electric Porsche model shares a resemblance in size and shape with the current petrol-powered 718 models. It's anticipated that both versions will be sold concurrently for a while. The upcoming model also borrows design features from Porsche's range of electric vehicles. It is anticipated to incorporate some design elements from the 2021 Mission R concept, such as the T-shaped battery pack that occupies the central tunnel and area behind the seats. However, it remains to be seen if the production version will deliver the same 670 horsepower as the concept, which has the potential to temporarily increase to 1,073 horsepower.

Von Wüstenwinden und Wunschträumen: Der Dacia Duster Soul of Dakar – Ein Prototyp für das Abenteuer 2025

Published

To enhance the intimacy of your experience

Dacia Duster, the Spirit of Dakar: Headed for the Desert

This one-of-a-kind model takes its cue from the prototype set to debut at the iconic rally in 2025.

The 47th iteration of the Dakar Rally is scheduled from January 3 to 17, 2025, in Saudi Arabia, and for the first time, the Dacia factory team will be among the contenders.

In celebration of their participation in the renowned race using the Sandrider concept, the company has recently revealed a unique model in Italy. Dubbed the Dacia Duster "Soul of Dakar," it has been outfitted with a variety of accessories and a distinctive paint job. Here's what you need to know.

Photo Gallery: Dacia Duster Soul of Dakar 2024

A Truly Unique Duster

Externally, the Dacia Duster "Soul of Dakar" stands out as a one-of-a-kind vehicle, featuring a paint job crafted by the company's design center that echoes the aesthetics and hues of the official Sandrider.

The creative team has incorporated a variety of accessories from the official InNature collection, including a roof rack that takes advantage of the adjustable railing, a weatherproof hard case, a soft, waterproof duffel bag, and a shovel.

Inside, this unique piece is fully equipped with all the YouClip accessories, including various light sources throughout the cabin, hooks for bags, multiple phone holders, and several cup and tablet holders.

Equipped with a Mild Hybrid Engine and Four-Wheel Drive

It goes without saying that a four-wheel-drive system is a must for such a well-equipped prototype. Indeed, the company's engineers have opted for the powertrain that delivers 130 horsepower, which pairs a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with a 48V hybrid module, powered by a 0.8-kWh battery. This setup is integrated with the brand's proprietary 4×4 system to ensure the vehicle can handle rough terrain.

Regarding the 4×4 functionality: The latest Duster model allows constant control through a dial located in the center of the seats. This dial enables the driver to select between driving modes such as Snow, Mud/Sand, and Off Road, which is indicated by the "Lock" label. This feature locks the power distribution at an even 50:50 split.

Dacia, Dacia:

Clearly, the Dacia Duster "Soul of Dakar" is set to be a one-of-a-kind vehicle, likely to be utilized for promotional purposes. However, this won't deter aficionados from attempting to replicate their own unique version inspired by this model.

Hyundai Palisade 2025: Das Luxus-SUV mit Mercedes-Flair und Neun-Sitzer Option

Hyundai Palisade (2025): The Redesign of the Large US Nine-Seater SUV

Doesn't the front end remind you of a Mercedes with a dash-eight design?

We've become accustomed to Hyundai and Kia making major design overhauls with the release of each new model generation. This trend continues with the latest Palisade, as the full-size SUV sports a look that's quite distinct from its predecessor.

In the German market, the Santa Fe marks the pinnacle of Hyundai's SUV offerings, but the recent introduction of the Palisade in the United States takes it a step further. It boasts up to nine seats and features a rear design reminiscent of a Range Rover, along with a front that subtly echoes the classic Mercedes "Strich-Acht" style. The outgoing Palisade model, which measures over five meters in length, was originally launched in 2018 but was not made available in Europe.

Photo Gallery: 2026 Hyundai Palisade

The leading model among Hyundai's gasoline-powered family vehicles in the US has a more boxy appearance and is equipped with 21-inch wheels, which, considering their numerous spokes, are likely quite challenging to clean.

The new Palisade features segmented lighting at both ends, reflecting the pixel-inspired design theme seen in Hyundai's electric vehicle lineup, including the recently unveiled Ioniq 9. The large rectangular shapes at the front likely serve as daytime running lights. Below these and above the expansive grille, there are four rectangles presumed to be the main headlights, offering both low and high beam functionality. A slender LED strip runs along the top of the grille.

Hyundai has hinted at design modifications without specifying exact measurements, indicating a reduction in the front overhang. The wheelbase has been extended, offering a greater distance between the wheels compared to the previous model's 2,900-millimeter axle spacing. The cabin space remains as spacious as before, and the inclusion of a dual sunroof is likely to be a feature reserved for the more premium variants.

The rear of the vehicle presents a cleaner appearance since the exhaust has been concealed beneath the bumper, and the rear windshield wiper is now tucked away under the roof spoiler. Unlike the design common to most Hyundai models, the taillights, which bear a strong resemblance to the front headlights, do not extend to the rear hatch. There's no HTRAC badge in sight, but it's almost certain that the second-generation Palisade will come with the option of all-wheel drive.

The interior of the vehicle has undergone a thorough redesign. It now features two 12.3-inch screens seamlessly incorporated into the dashboard, which still retains an array of physical buttons. The distinct climate controls, along with various other buttons and dials for radio/multimedia and shortcuts to specific features, are easily identifiable. Additionally, the gear selector has been moved from the center console to the steering column.

The expansive space situated between the front seats, equipped with 100-watt USB-C ports, cup holders, and a wireless charging pad, serves multiple purposes. It can be transformed into an additional seat, elevating the new Hyundai Palisade's capacity to accommodate up to nine passengers. The images presented are of the South Korean model, where drivers of this nine-seater version are granted the privilege of using the bus lane.

The Palisade is Hyundai's latest model to forgo the traditional H-badge on the steering wheel. Instead, it features four dots representing the letter "H" in Morse code. It seems the steering wheel design has been carried over from the smaller Santa Fe model. Additionally, the circular door handles are reminiscent of those on a Chevy HHR, while the understated ambient lighting adds a cozy touch to the interior.

Technical specifications have not been released yet, but there has been extensive coverage indicating that Hyundai will be equipping the Palisade with a hybrid engine at last. It is anticipated that all the details will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks.

Hyundai Palisade (2025): A Fresh Take on the Spacious Nine-Seater SUV for the US Market

Doesn't the front section also give off a Mercedes Strich-Acht vibe?

It's become the norm to expect Hyundai and Kia to undergo significant design overhauls with the release of a new model generation. This holds true for the latest Palisade, as the full-size SUV sports a look that's markedly different from its predecessor.

In Germany, the Santa Fe represents the pinnacle of Hyundai's SUV offerings, but the latest Palisade takes it a step further in the American market. It boasts up to nine seats, a rear design reminiscent of a Range Rover, and a front that subtly echoes the Mercedes "Strich-Acht." The new model replaces the previous Palisade, which was over five meters long and debuted in 2018, but it was never introduced to the European market.

Photo Gallery: 2026 Hyundai Palisade

The leading model among Hyundai's gasoline-powered family vehicles in the US has a boxier appearance and is mounted on 21-inch wheels, which, due to their multi-spoke design, might pose a challenge to clean.

The new Palisade features segmented lights on its extremities that reflect the pixel motif used across Hyundai's electric vehicle range, including the recently introduced Ioniq 9. The prominent rectangles at the front are likely daytime running lights. Below these, next to the expansive grille, are four rectangular shapes which are presumably the main headlights, equipped with both low and high beam functions. A slender LED line runs across the top of the grille.

Hyundai has indicated that the front overhang of their latest model has been slightly reduced in length, without providing specific figures. The wheelbase has been extended, resulting in an increased axle distance surpassing the previous model's 2,900 millimeters. The cabin space continues to be spacious, and the model retains the option of a dual sunroof, likely available for the more premium variants.

The rear of the vehicle presents a cleaner look, as the exhaust has been tucked away beneath the bumper, and the rear windshield wiper is now concealed under the roof spoiler. Unlike the design common to many Hyundai models, the taillights, which bear a striking resemblance to the front headlights, do not extend to the rear hatch. While the HTRAC badge is absent, it's expected that the second-generation Palisade will indeed offer an all-wheel drive option.

The interior has been entirely redesigned. Twin 12.3-inch displays have been embedded into the dashboard, which still features a range of physical buttons. The individual climate controls are clearly visible, along with other buttons and switches for the radio/multimedia and shortcuts to specific features. The gear selector has been moved from the center console to the steering column.

The spacious zone situated between the front seats, equipped with 100-watt USB-C charging ports, cup holders, and a wireless charging pad, serves multiple purposes. It has the capacity to transform into an additional seat, enabling the latest Hyundai Palisade to accommodate as many as nine passengers. The images displayed are of the South Korean model, which allows drivers of the nine-seater configuration to access the bus lane.

The Palisade is Hyundai's latest model to forego the traditional "H" emblem on the steering wheel. In its place, there are four dots representing the letter "H" in Morse code. It appears that the steering wheel design has been borrowed from its smaller counterpart, the Santa Fe. Beyond that, the circular door handles are reminiscent of a Chevy HHR, while the subtle ambient lighting adds a cozy touch to the interior.

There's a lack of technical specifications at the moment, yet there's extensive coverage suggesting that Hyundai is set to equip the Palisade with a hybrid engine soon. It's anticipated that full details will be released in the upcoming weeks.

Rivian’s Responsive Revolution: Launch Mode, Custom Wheel Configurations, and Enhanced Infotainment on the Horizon

Published

on

By

Rivian is rolling out a software enhancement that will introduce a launch mode and simplify the process of changing wheels. The company consistently provides updates via wireless transmission and takes into account consumer responses to determine the focus of its upgrades, regardless of whether the feedback is positive or negative.

During a cozy discussion at the car manufacturer's Venice venue in California, back in November, Wassym Bensaid, the head of software, detailed numerous upcoming updates and modifications to their system. These changes are all inspired by the suggestions and comments from the vehicle owners.

The upcoming Rivian system will enable users to customize their tire dimensions. Initially, the Rivian R1T and R1S models, during their first three years, came with wheel sizes of 20, 21, and 22 inches, paired with either all-terrain tires for off-road use or all-season tires for regular roads. However, the models set to release in 2025, referred to as the second generation or Gen 2, will streamline the options to only 20 and 22 inches, still accompanied by the choice of all-terrain or all-season tires. Nonetheless, these vehicles are designed for adaptability, allowing owners to modify their tires to suit different weather conditions or adventurous excursions.

Owners who want to switch from 22-inch wheels to 20-inch wheels equipped with winter or all-terrain tires must go to a Rivian service center. There, the infotainment system of the vehicle needs to be updated to acknowledge the new size of the wheels and tires. This adjustment is necessary so that the vehicle's range estimator can provide accurate trip calculations.

Bensaid has announced that a software update slated for the first quarter of 2025 will introduce the option for users to adjust the size of their wheels and tires manually.

Bensaid has verified that launch control is on the way for the first generation of Rivian vehicles.

At present, the team is developing a launch control function for the R1T and R1S models released before 2025, with the feature expected to be rolled out in the year 2025.

Bensaid remained tight-lipped on the system's details, however, he mentioned, "Our goal is for it to be an exhilarating bundle."

Bensaid hinted at unexpected elements on the horizon. He mentioned that certain long-sought-after capabilities requested by owners will finally be introduced, although he refrained from providing details about these specific features.

Bensaid has verified the introduction of the so-called Energy App 2.0. This initiative aims to provide customers with clear visibility and understanding of their energy consumption patterns. The objective is to inform users about the charging process, the distance they can travel on a charge, and to encourage eco-friendly practices.

Upcoming 2025 Model of the Rivian

Bensaid has revealed plans for Rivian to eventually allow external developers access to its infotainment system. This move would permit the integration of applications such as Gaia GPS or onX, which are particularly useful for off-road navigation. However, he emphasized that he cannot commit to a specific timeline for this development due to other ongoing priority projects, although the necessary groundwork has been laid.

The executive in charge of software has verified that Rivians are set to sport an updated design for their digital gauge clusters starting in 2025.

Charging Revolution: Universal Plug-and-Charge for EVs Set to Launch in 2025

Published

on

By

Starting in 2025, a universal plug-and-charge system is set to be introduced for electric vehicles across the U.S., enabling them to begin charging immediately at any public station upon connection, thanks to the efforts of a group of involved parties.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), along with the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation of the federal government and the EVPKI consortium—a group that includes car manufacturers, charging station networks, equipment producers, and various other commercial stakeholders—are embarking on a new project.

2023 model of Cadillac Lyriq spotted at an EVgo direct current rapid-charging facility.

Several car manufacturers have introduced plug-and-charge technology in stages, typically as an exclusive feature within their own branded charging systems. However, this approach has created inconsistencies, with the technology being compatible with certain car-and-charger or car-and-network pairings, but not universally. The latest initiative is designed to move away from dependence on particular car companies or distinct equipment or software types, and instead, standardize plug-and-charge as a common practice.

This entails creating a unified system enabling electric vehicles, charging stations, and charging networks to interact without any issues, according to a statement from the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation. This office is a joint venture between the Department of Energy and the Department of Transportation and was established under the infrastructure law of the Biden administration. It acts as the central hub for the government's strategy to create a nationwide network for electric vehicle charging.

2023 model of the Nissan Ariya spotted at an EVgo electric vehicle

Central to the initiative is the creation of a Certificate Trust List (CTL), which will be crafted by the group of collaborating members. This CTL will serve as a comprehensive register of vehicles, devices, and payment systems that comply with established benchmarks. The objective is to facilitate swift verification of vehicles upon connection to a charging point, by granting pre-approval to entities conforming to these benchmarks. Additionally, the consortium is committed to implementing stringent cyber protection protocols, an area that has been under federal scrutiny since 2022 or earlier.

There hasn't been a specific schedule released for the complete implementation of the advanced plug-and-charge system. However, this development signifies a significant move towards simplifying the electric vehicle charging process, which previously involved the cumbersome need for numerous accounts, cards, and key fobs to use various public charging points.

Stellantis Sets Sights on Cutting EV Battery Costs in Half by 2030 with Lithium-Sulfur Breakthrough

Published

By

Stellantis has set a goal to cut the cost of electric vehicle batteries by 50% by the year 2030. To achieve this, they have partnered with Zeta Energy, a company located in Texas, to create lithium-sulfur batteries. These batteries are expected to lower expenses and decrease the weight of the battery pack, as well as enhance the rate at which they can be charged.

The car manufacturer, alongside Zeta Energy, asserts that lithium-sulfur batteries could match the energy density per volume of present-day lithium-ion cells but cost significantly less—below 50% per kilowatt-hour. Stellantis highlighted in a news announcement that sulfur, an inexpensive and abundant element, will be utilized in its raw form, sourced from residual byproducts of various industries. Additionally, other waste substances and methane will be employed in the battery production, reducing expenses and cutting down on CO2 emissions.

STLA Expansive stage

The automaker has highlighted that lithium-sulfur technology could potentially boost rapid charging rates by as much as 50%. Additionally, it could lead to considerably lighter batteries that have the same effective capacity as their lithium-ion counterparts.

The deal stipulates initial development efforts focused on potentially bringing the product to market by 2030. Stellantis aims to utilize its current battery plants and asserts that it can maintain the procurement of battery materials within the confines of Europe or North America, consistent with its existing car production network.

Platform for medium-sized vehicles by Stellantis ST

In 2023, Stellantis made public its collaboration with Lyten for the advancement of lithium-sulfur battery technology, along with a financial contribution to the Californian startup through its investment branch, Stellantis Ventures. The car manufacturer emphasized to Green Car Reports that this alliance operates in conjunction with the existing collaboration with Zeta Energy.

For a long time, the potential of lithium-sulfur batteries to significantly increase distance without extra weight or cost has been recognized as a major breakthrough. Recent progress has overcome several major hurdles, yet large-scale manufacturing and the limited lifespan of these batteries continue to pose challenges. It remains to be seen whether Stellantis will overcome these challenges by the decade's close.

Lucid Motors Launches Production of the 2025 Gravity SUV: The Future of Electric Luxury on Wheels

Published

on

By

Production of the Lucid Gravity electric SUV has commenced, with the initial units for customers coming off the assembly line at the automaker's facility in Casa Grande, Arizona, this past Thursday.

The Gravity made its debut in its final production version at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show. It's set to hit the market as a 2025 model, beginning with the Grand Touring version priced at $94,900, not including the delivery fee. The Grand Touring variant aims to deliver over 440 miles on a single charge, with a battery size close to that of the Lucid Air Grand Touring sedan, indicating it's likely just over 118 kWh.

It is anticipated that a two-motor setup will produce 828 horsepower, which matches Lucid's initial promises for the Gravity model unveiled in 2023. Additionally, this power estimate aligns with the predicted driving range. Lucid initially stated that the initial models would accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds. A test drive of a prototype earlier in the year also suggested the vehicle would have quite dynamic handling.

Lucid is set to release a Touring model priced at $79,900 after the Grand Touring, anticipated to hit the market in 2026. While there's no official word on other models, Lucid might expand its offerings to include an entry-level Pure grade and a high-performance tri-motor Sapphire edition, akin to the existing options in the Air range.

The initial versions of the Gravity vehicle are equipped with CCS charging outlets. However, Lucid announced in September that beginning in 2025, the Gravity will incorporate a NACS charging port, which is compatible with Tesla's charging network in North America.

Lucid is gearing up to target the broader consumer base with the launch of three new models. The initial offering will be a mid-sized SUV priced at $50,000, named the Lucid Earth, with the production anticipated to commence towards the end of 2026.

The forthcoming Earth and Gravity models from Lucid are expected to capture a larger customer base compared to the Air model, which saw 2,781 vehicles delivered in the third quarter of 2024. This number represents a significant jump of 90% in deliveries compared to the same quarter the previous year, a time when Lucid was probably still in the process of increasing its production capabilities.

Trump Tariffs Threaten Auto Industry: Higher Costs for EVs and Gasoline Trucks Alike

Published

on

By

Experts warn that the proposed import taxes by the Trump government, a hefty 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, could have a significant impact on the big three Detroit car manufacturers. The cost of their products, including electric vehicles and crucial gas-powered pickup trucks, is likely to surge as reported by Reuters.

According to Reuters, General Motors is expected to be the most affected by these measures, rooted in the anti-immigration sentiment central to Trump's election campaign, as they would interfere with the well-entrenched supply networks across North America.

According to a Reuters article, which references data from the analytics company GlobalData, General Motors is projected to bring in over 750,000 vehicles from Canada and Mexico in the current year. It's estimated that around half of these imports will be the lucrative large-scale gas-powered trucks that are a major source of revenue for the car manufacturer.

2025 Chevy Equinox Electric Vehicle

In a separate report by Reuters, it's mentioned that import duties might impact the cost of Chevrolet's Equinox EV, which is General Motors' least expensive electric vehicle. This model is put together in Mexico and has a price tag of $34,995, prior to the application of a $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit, which is anticipated to be eliminated by Trump.

Mexico stands as a significant player in the electric vehicle production arena, sending more EVs across the border to the United States than it keeps for its own market. However, this is reflective of a larger pattern that encompasses all kinds of automobiles and their components. According to Reuters, an overwhelming 90% of Mexico's light vehicle output and nearly half of its automotive parts are shipped off to various regions within North America. Leading the pack in moving vehicles from Mexico to American soil are industry giants such as GM, Ford, Nissan, and Stellantis. Not to be overlooked, Toyota, VW, and Honda have also made their mark, each importing upwards of 100,000 Mexican-made vehicles into the U.S. within the first half of 2024 alone.

According to information obtained by Reuters from Wells Fargo’s estimates, the proposed tariffs by the Trump administration would affect fully assembled cars as well as individual components. If a 25% import tax were to be imposed on vehicle parts originating from Canada or Mexico, it could result in an increase of $2,100 for cars assembled in the United States. For cars assembled in Canada or Mexico, the price hike could be between $8,000 and $10,000.

Production of the Ford Mustang Mach-E takes place in Mexico.

Supporters of Trump might experience greater economic discomfort from tariffs. Despite numerous pickup trucks being put together on American soil, a considerable portion of sought-after models such as GM's Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, the Ford Maverick, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tacoma are manufactured in Mexico. Reuters highlights that tariffs will affect these trucks that are especially favored in predominantly Trump-supporting rural regions.

Large vehicles such as trucks generally yield profits, providing automakers an opportunity to handle rising costs internally instead of transferring them to the buyers. However, this might not apply to economical smaller vehicles such as the Nissan Sentra, as pointed out by veteran industry expert Sam Fiorani in a discussion with Reuters. Electric vehicles might experience similar cost escalations as seen with budget-friendly gasoline vehicles.

To enhance the intimacy of the experience

The Toyota Land Cruiser, a vintage vehicle with a history of 40 years, receives an upgrade

In Australia, this classic car is now available with a manual transmission – a brand new feature!

As we approach the year 2025, the focus today is on Toyota's latest update for the Land Cruiser in Australia, which now includes a five-speed manual gearbox. Yes, that's right, five gears. As you can see in the images, this isn't the J300 series sold in certain markets, nor the J250 series found in the United States.

To trace the roots of this SUV, we have to look back to 1984. The venerable J70 series is set to receive an update in 2025, forty years after it first debuted.

Despite the phase-out of the V8 engine this year due to "new regulations and societal expectations," the J70 continues to be driven in Australia. When the 4.5-liter diesel engine was discontinued, the manual transmission also saw its end. However, the manual gear shift has made a comeback, paired now with a smaller 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine, also diesel-powered, delivers 201 horsepower and 450 Newton-meters of torque.

Despite having four fewer cylinders, the smaller diesel engine manages to deliver nearly identical power with an extra 20 Newton-meters of torque. Toyota continues to provide the J70 model with a six-speed automatic transmission in the Australian market, which boosts the torque to 500 Nm.

When equipped with automatic transmission, the maximum torque is accessible much sooner, at 1,600 rpm instead of 2,400 rpm, which is the case with manual transmission. The manual gearbox is designed with a unique gear ratio and stronger hardware to endure the stresses that a Land Cruiser may encounter.

In a manual transmission, the initial three gears are designed with a shorter ratio to enhance power during start-up. To compensate, there's a longer fifth gear aimed at boosting fuel efficiency and reducing engine noise when driving at speed. Toyota has installed a fresh flywheel but had to eliminate the front center console to make room for the manual gear stick. Additionally, the hill descent control was discontinued to maintain the traditional Land Cruiser feel.

2023 Model of the Toyota Land Cruiser J70

The most affordable Land Cruiser J70 featuring a manual transmission is priced at approximately $47,000 in Australia. However, Australia isn't the only place where the 40-year-old SUV is available for purchase. It's also on sale in Japan, equipped with a fender mirror. A two-door version with a short wheelbase can be found in the United Arab Emirates.

Further information on the latest Land Cruiser for the European market:

Despite various updates over the years, the model in question remains a J70 Land Cruiser. To the best of our knowledge, this makes it the second oldest vehicle still in production, following the Lada Niva which debuted in 1977, a full seven years before the 70 series.

To enhance a more intimate experience

The Toyota Land Cruiser, a vehicle with a four-decade legacy, receives a fresh update.

For the first time, a manual transmission option is now available in Australia— a novel addition!

As we approach the year 2025, the focus shifts to Toyota's decision to equip the Land Cruiser with a five-speed manual transmission in the Australian market. Indeed, a quintet of gears. The images illustrate that this isn't the J300 series found in certain markets, nor the J250 series available in the United States.

To trace the lineage of this SUV, we need to journey back to 1984. The venerable J70 series is set to receive an update in 2025, a full forty years since its debut.

Despite the discontinuation of the V8 engine this year due to "modified regulations and societal expectations," the J70 continues to operate in Australia. When the 4.5-liter diesel engine was phased out, the manual transmission also disappeared. However, the manual gearbox has made a comeback, paired with a more compact 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine is also diesel-powered, offering 201 horsepower and a torque of 450 Newton-meters.

Despite having four fewer cylinders, the smaller diesel engine nearly matches the power of its counterpart and even boasts an extra 20 Newton-meters of torque. In Australia, Toyota continues to offer the J70 with a six-speed automatic transmission, which increases the torque to 500 Nm.

With the automatic transmission, peak torque is accessible sooner, hitting at 1,600 rpm as opposed to the 2,400 rpm needed when opting for a manual transmission. The manual gearbox is equipped with a unique gear ratio and more durable components to endure the stresses a Land Cruiser may encounter.

In manual transmissions, the initial three gears are designed with a shorter ratio to boost performance during initial acceleration. Conversely, the fifth gear is elongated, enhancing fuel economy and reducing engine noise when traveling at elevated speeds. Toyota incorporated a fresh flywheel but had to eliminate the front center console to accommodate the manual gear shift. Furthermore, the hill descent control feature was discontinued to preserve the traditional Land Cruiser essence.

The 2023 model of the Toyota Land Cruiser J70

The most affordable Land Cruiser J70 with a manual transmission is priced at approximately $47,000 in Australia. However, Australia isn't the only place where Toyota continues to sell the four-decade-old SUV. It's also available in Japan, equipped with a fender mirror. A two-door version with a short wheelbase can be found in the United Arab Emirates.

Further details on the latest Land Cruiser for the European market:

Despite receiving updates over the years, this iteration of the Land Cruiser remains a J70 model. To our knowledge, it stands as the second longest-running vehicle model still in production, following the Lada Niva. The latter was introduced to the market in 1977, a full seven years before the 70 series debuted.

Lucid Eyes Multi-Speed Transmission for EV Efficiency Leap: A Glimpse into the Future?

Published

on

By

Is a dual-speed transmission the key to enhancing the performance of upcoming Lucid electric vehicles?

Lucid Motors' current electric model, the Lucid Air, boasts considerable efficiency with its present propulsion system. However, a recently uncovered patent application suggests that the company is exploring the adoption of a two-speed gearbox for potential incorporation in forthcoming models.

The original discovery of the patent by Motor1 points to a 2023 filing that aims to enhance the existing drive-unit configuration. This current system employs dual coaxial planetary gearsets to effectively decrease the speed from the motor to the wheels, ensuring the mechanism remains space-efficient.

The text outlines a mechanism involving at least one set of planetary gears that enables the transition between two different gear ratios. This is accomplished through gears with conical surfaces and a series of unidirectional clutches that facilitate the shift from one ratio to another.

Electric vehicles typically operate with a single-speed gearbox, although the idea of incorporating multi-speed transmissions has been debated for a while. The initial design for the Tesla Roadster included a 2-speed transmission, however, due to issues with the prototypes not being able to manage the engine's abundant torque, it was replaced with a constant reduction gear system.

Clear dual-gear system – Patent granted in the United States.

In their patent submission, Lucid echoes previous clarifications given to Green Car Reports by CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson regarding their decision to not implement a multi-speed gearbox. The document's writers outlined that the transmission systems present in some electric vehicles are bulky, intricate systems that could potentially reduce efficiency, provide inadequate torque at the outset, and exert an undue amount of inertia on the drivetrain, potentially causing an abrupt and uncomfortable transition during gear shifts.

In the event that this particular element can be integrated without occupying initial room or compromising performance, and it enables the use of more compact and lighter engines, then combining it with Lucid's future Atlas drive system might result in saved expenses and reduced weight. However, there has been no official statement from the company linking this patent to the Atlas project.

Upcoming Lucid Atlas powertrain set to debut in forthcoming mid-sized electric vehicles

Lucid is always on the lookout for fresh concepts and creating cutting-edge tech to enhance their electric vehicle offerings and fast-track the shift towards eco-friendly travel and power usage," the firm replied when asked by Green Car Reports if this patent might tie in with Atlas, particularly regarding upcoming mid-range models. "It's common practice to safeguard exclusive intellectual property during the innovation and development stages, but we're not in a position to discuss how particular patents may be utilized down the line."

Upcoming Model of Lucid Air

The Porsche Taycan features a dual-speed transmission system for its back tires, which according to Porsche, aids in harmonizing initial pickup speed with energy efficiency at higher velocities. This transmission contains a first gear that boosts torque for improved initial acceleration and simultaneously reduces heat in the rear motor and power systems. The second gear kicks in once the vehicle hits a preset speed or when the driver lightens pressure on the gas pedal (there's no option for manual gear change), and soft driving can bypass the first gear altogether.

Tesla's Model S with two motors employs motors that have varying gear ratios for comparable aims. Meanwhile, Volkswagen believes it can uncover alternative methods to enhance efficiency. Speaking to Green Car Reports, Volkswagen's chief of worldwide R&D, Kai Grünitz, stated that the company has not yet considered incorporating dual-speed transmissions in electric vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz is incorporating a dual-speed gearbox into its upcoming MMA platform set to debut in four small-sized vehicles. The first of these will be the 2026 Mercedes CLA, offered in both electric and hybrid versions. There's also speculation that Lucid may adopt an extra gear ratio in its forthcoming electric vehicles.
