Raul Fernandez’s Tears of Frustration: A Near Victory Ends in Despair at Catalunya Sprint
Raul Fernandez confessed to being overwhelmed with emotion, shedding tears after his fall from the front during the Catalunya sprint.
Raul Fernandez had established a lead of almost one second in the Catalunya MotoGP sprint, only to lose it all at the tenth turn.
Fernandez, who has not yet claimed a victory in the top category, seemed poised to alter that status until he lost control of the front end of his RS-GP23 bike.
Fernandez mentioned, "Now I'm feeling slightly more at ease, but when I got to the pit, I was sobbing uncontrollably." This was in reference to a significant mistake made by both Brad Binder and Francesco Bagnaia.
"I wish to apologize to my team for the foolish error I committed. Today, I was overly confident, feeling completely in command. The crash, in my view, was a blunder."
"I attempted to make up for the error I had made on the prior turn, yet ultimately, I found pleasure in the experience. It's not the outcome we were aiming for, as we ended up crashing while in the lead."
"I believe we're making great progress and with each passing day, my comfort level increases. Today, I experienced a significant improvement with the motorcycle, and Aprilia's support has been fantastic."
"Yesterday presented significant challenges, and I struggled to feel at ease on the bike. It was incredibly hard to control."
"Today, I experienced a sense of ease similar to my time in Moto2, allowing me to ride comfortably. Despite a mishap, my attention is now on making a comeback and focusing on what lies ahead tomorrow."
"I have to replicate this performance for the next day as we possess the speed. The task was quite effortless. It wasn't a case of me attempting a lap record and failing; rather, it was a simple error. I maintained my composure while riding and felt extremely at ease."
Fernandez's showing in both the qualifying rounds and the sprint race was unexpectedly strong, catching many off guard. This was particularly noteworthy as leading the pack in MotoGP races is not something he is commonly known for, and he had a difficult time in the practice sessions on Friday.
However, Fernandez provided a straightforward explanation for his progress: "We made some adjustments to the set-up, but primarily, we modified the electronics."
"I made an effort to alter my approach for this particular track, as it doesn't come naturally to me. Moreover, the significant shift involved the electronics."
"Today, I had the freedom to ride exactly as I wished, without needing to consider my actions."
Fernandez wasn't alone in his error; another member of Trackhouse Racing also missed out on securing the victory.
Binder and Bagnaia followed suit, yet Fernandez refrained from citing that as a justification.
"Fernandez expressed greater satisfaction with the speed rather than disappointment over the accident, stating, 'This comes with the territory.'"
"We witnessed Pecco and Brad, both seasoned and triumphant racers; they possess extensive experience, and he [Bagnaia], the world champion, was involved in a crash."
"This isn't a justification, but rather the truth. The category isn't simple, yet we're on the correct path."
