Pressure Mounts on Augusto Fernandez: KTM’s Ultimatum for 2024 MotoGP Season
KTM: Augusto Fernandez Realized His Career Was at Stake if He Didn't Excel
KTM: "We must be straightforward. It has always been evident. If Augusto doesn't achieve something remarkable in the initial races of 2024, it's the end for him."
KTM has announced that Augusto Fernandez was informed about the difficult truth regarding his future before the start of the 2024 MotoGP season.
Similar to Jack Miller, Fernandez has been dropped by KTM for the 2025 season and seems at risk of losing his place in MotoGP completely.
Fernandez reportedly has opportunities available in WorldSBK and Moto2, but none in the top-tier class.
The Spanish cyclist has been struggling all season, and with newcomer teammate Pedro Acosta holding fifth place in the rankings, Fernandez has been unable to avoid scrutiny.
In an interview with GPOne, Hubert Trunkenpolz, a member of the executive board at Pierer Mobility, acknowledged that Fernandez was aware maintaining his position would be challenging.
Trunkenpolz stated that it was evident prior to this season that Augusto needed to make considerable improvements, or else things would not go well for him in 2025.
"We shouldn't try to make it sound better than it is. The situation has always been straightforward: Augusto must achieve exceptional results in the initial races of 2024, or his opportunity will come to an end. He was fully aware of this."
Pit Beirer mentioned Fernandez, stating that the Austrian company anticipated some challenges would arise.
Beirer mentioned, "Essentially, Augusto being a Moto2 world champion is quite a significant achievement in this sport."
Everyone understood that Augusto might not begin the MotoGP world championship with as much speed and success as Pedro Acosta.
"Achieving fourth place in the 2023 Le Mans GP is no easy feat. Naturally, we leveraged his Moto2 achievements and had faith in his abilities."
