Piastri’s Maiden Victory and Hamilton’s Masterclass: In-Depth Ratings from the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix
Formula 1 Driver Evaluations: Lewis Hamilton Shines at the Hungarian Grand Prix
Crash.net presents its analysis of Formula 1 performances at the 2024 race in Hungary.
Oscar Piastri – 9
Piastri delivered an outstanding performance to secure his first ever Formula 1 win. He was almost flawless until his initial pit stop. Although his performance dipped in the final leg of the race, his victory was well-earned overall.
Lando Norris – 8.5
Norris found himself lamenting a slow start once again, slipping to third place right off the bat. In the initial stages, Piastri proved to be faster, but Norris demonstrated his skill in the latter part of the contest. Ultimately, Norris embraced a team-oriented approach, following McLaren's orders to allow Piastri to secure his debut victory in Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton – 9.5
At the Hungaroring, Hamilton showcased exceptional skill once again. Despite Mercedes possessing arguably only the third-quickest vehicle, Hamilton maximized his car's potential. His defense against Verstappen was outstanding.
Charles Leclerc – 8.5
Leclerc faced bad luck due to the red flag's ill-timed appearance in Q3, which prevented him from completing a second run and resulted in a sixth-place start. Nonetheless, an impressive launch propelled him into contention at the forefront. Throughout the race, he clearly outperformed his teammate Sainz.
Max Verstappen – 7.5
This was not Verstappen's finest outing, as he appeared less polished than usual. He slipped up during a clash with Hamilton, and his over-the-radio complaints came off as childish. It's understood that even the best can have their bad days, but with McLaren on the rise, it's crucial that both Verstappen and Red Bull step up their game.
Carlos Sainz – 7.5
Sainz performed commendably in the qualifying rounds, landing a fourth-place position. However, a sluggish start caused him to fall back behind Alonso. From there, he managed to deliver a steady performance, ultimately clinching the sixth spot.
Sergio Perez – 6
Following yet another disappointing qualifying session, Perez managed to pull off a reasonably good performance on Sunday, securing a seventh-place finish ahead of Russell.
George Russell – 6
This weekend marked Russell's lowest point of the season, failing to advance past the first qualifying round. He found himself trailing behind Bottas and was later outmaneuvered by Perez due to strategic decisions. Overall, it was a disappointing weekend for him.
Yuki Tsunoda – 8
Tsunoda had a solid weekend, effectively utilizing a single-stop strategy to secure a finish within the points. His only hiccup came with a crash during qualifying, which fortunately did not significantly impact his starting spot.
Lance Stroll – 6.5
Thanks to a strategic upper hand, Stroll outperformed Alonso during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite instructions from his team to the contrary, he chose not to yield, securing the last available point.
Fernando Alonso – 7
Alonso was visibly upset with Aston Martin's strategy to go for an early pit stop. This move placed him at a disadvantage compared to Stroll and Tsunoda.
Daniel Ricciardo – 7
Similar to Alonso, Ricciardo regretted his initial pit stop and the decision to stop twice. Apart from that, he maintained competitive speed and performance at the Hungaroring.
Nico Hulkenberg – 7
Initiating the sequence of pit stops prematurely, Hulkenberg opted for a strategy by pitting on the third lap. Unfortunately, the tactic didn't pay off as Haas lacked the necessary speed to secure any points.
Alex Albon – 7
Scoring points was always going to be a tall order for Williams in Hungary. Albon expressed some disappointment following qualifying, as he didn't reach Q3, especially given the apparent advantage held by the Astons and Red Bulls.
Kevin Magnussen – 6.5
This weekend, Magnussen couldn't keep up with his teammate Hulkenberg, trailing him in terms of speed once more.
Valtteri Bottas – 6.5
With several new upgrades debuted this weekend, the Sauber showed improved competitiveness, enabling Bottas to secure the 12th position in qualifying.
Logan Sargeant – 6
Sargeant showed improvement during the qualifying round, narrowly missing Albon's time by a tenth of a second. However, a sluggish start and a delayed decision to switch to soft tires caused him to fall back in the rankings.
Esteban Ocon – 6.5
Alpine had a disappointing weekend. Their strategy to remain in the pits during a crucial qualifying moment when conditions were improving backfired significantly. As expected, Ocon was unable to bounce back from this setback.
Zhou Guanyu – 6
Zhou didn’t perform well in qualifying and then delivered an unremarkable performance during the race.
Pierre Gasly – 6
Starting from the pit lane, Gasly's race ended prematurely because of a hydraulic problem. It was indeed a forgettable weekend for both him and the Alpine team.
