Perez Prioritizes Monaco Comeback Over Contract Talks Amid Red Bull Uncertainty
"No agreement has been finalized" – Sergio Perez anticipates Red Bull decision following Imola disappointment
Sergio Perez is steering clear of contract discussions, concentrating instead on achieving a successful weekend in Monaco.
Sergio Perez has emphasized his complete dedication to making a strong comeback at the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix after a disappointing showing in the previous race at Imola.
Perez faced his most challenging weekend of the season during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, failing to advance beyond Q2 and ultimately securing an eighth-place finish in the race.
Perez encountered his first significant setback of the season after initially having a solid beginning to the year.
Nonetheless, as McLaren and Ferrari have shown enhanced form lately, Perez faces an increasingly difficult battle for consistent podium finishes.
Perez must demonstrate that his performance at the Imola weekend was merely an isolated incident to retain his position at Red Bull for a fifth season.
According to sources, Perez has responded to Red Bull's proposal for a one-year contract by seeking a longer-term commitment for greater stability.
However, Perez declined to engage in discussions about contract matters before the Monaco race this weekend.
Addressing a group of chosen journalists in Monaco, which included Crash.net, Perez mentioned, “As I've previously stated, my primary attention for this weekend is not on my contract situation. I'm aware that discussions are happening, and eventually, we'll have an update, and you'll be among the first to be informed.
"However, the key priority at this moment isn't about considering the next one, two, or three years. It's all about the upcoming Saturday this weekend; that's where my entire attention is directed."
"It doesn't equate to a specific number or anything similar, because unless you actually sign it, the proximity to finalizing doesn't count. As of now, no agreement has been inked, and besides, my current priority isn't the contract, it's primarily on the upcoming weekend."
Perez clinched victory at the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, earning a reputation as an expert in street circuit racing.
His additional victories with Red Bull were secured at city circuits – in Azerbaijan during 2021, and then in Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and again in Azerbaijan, all in 2023.
Evaluating his prospects for another victory in the principality, Perez stated: "Yes, I believe it essentially hinges on Saturday. Without securing a spot in the front row or at least third, our chances of clinching the race are slim.
"It's crucial to secure a spot in either the first or second row at the minimum."
Perez was gratified to receive support from Red Bull's leader, Christian Horner.
"Absolutely, I believe Christian is fully cognizant of the current situation. Up to Imola, our season has been outstanding," he stated. "Imola presented some challenges, and that's the whole story. Reducing those challenging days is crucial for my season; doing so would make it an excellent year since I feel I'm performing exceptionally well and I'm genuinely satisfied and competitive in the car. There’s no justification for us not to maintain this positive momentum."
