The affordable stalwart Opel Frontera has encountered swift competition. Which model comes out on top in different areas?

Dacia's Duster is among the brand's most triumphant offerings. In Germany alone, it saw over 18,000 units sold in 2023, even with the anticipation of a new model release that year. As of November 2024, Dacia has already recorded close to 20,000 registrations, and the numbers are expected to climb higher in 2025, which marks the first full sales year for the third generation of the Duster.

What's the secret behind the success of the Romanian brand that shares DNA with Renault? It's quite straightforward – offering a substantial vehicle at a minimal cost. Until now, Dacia seemed to navigate this niche with little competition. However, the Stellantis group has now realized the potential in marketing affordable models. As a result, we see the introduction of the Citroën C3 Aircross and its Opel sibling, resurrecting the classic name Frontera, both adhering to the same formula: a lot of car for a modest price.

Is the newcomer equipped to compete with the lightning-fast established budget option? What are the similarities and differences between the two? It's time to take a closer look and conduct an initial comparison of both models…

Exterior

With the latest generational shift, the Duster's design has been significantly refined yet maintains its recognizable practicality and sturdiness. Its profile bears a close resemblance to its predecessor; however, sharper lines and the addition of new Y-shaped LED headlights and taillights give the vehicle a more contemporary look.

The redesigned grille and more pronounced bumpers highlight the rugged nature of the Dacia, with skid plates underscoring its capability for off-road adventures. Its compact dimensions and significant ground clearance, nearly 22 centimeters, render the Duster adept for cross-country treks while remaining convenient for city driving.

The 2024 model of the Opel Frontera.

The Frontera embraces a more contemporary design approach, featuring crisp, dynamic contours and a bold front end. Its distinctive "Vizor" panel spans the entire width, seamlessly incorporating the LED headlights and the Opel emblem, giving the car a subtly futuristic appearance.

The profile reveals a sleek, streamlined shape highlighted by crisp detailing, as the rear end sports slender LED lights for a contemporary and uncluttered appearance. The Opel slightly exceeds the Duster in length and height, providing it with a more imposing stance and a perception of increased spaciousness. Its clearance is tailored for city driving and mild off-road paths.

Interior

The Dacia Duster maintains a practical and budget-friendly approach to its cabin design. It boasts a sturdy yet enhanced interior aesthetic. Some hard plastic areas have been swapped out for soft-touch materials, although there's still plenty present, and an 8-inch touchscreen provides essential connectivity options.

The space available is generally ample, with significant room overhead. Additionally, it has a trunk capacity of up to 472 liters, which can be increased to 1,550 liters when the back seats are folded down. Sturdy, yet practical without any luxurious embellishments.

The Opel Frontera emphasizes a contemporary and upscale environment (at least visually) with its "Pure Panel" dashboard design. However, the materials used don't actually enhance the luxury. Nonetheless, the emphasis on comfort is evident in the cozy seating and sensible interior layout.

Upcoming Dacia Duster Model Set for 2024

Upcoming 2024 Opel Frontera Model

The trunk space, ranging from roughly 460 to 1,600 liters, is nearly on par with the Duster's capacity. Nevertheless, the interior feels more spacious and opulent overall.

Powertrains

When it comes to what powers each vehicle, there's a mix of significant differences and surprising similarities. Notably, neither the Dacia nor the Opel offer a diesel engine option. The Dacia Duster comes standard with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine, which can run on either gasoline or LPG. Above the base engine, which delivers 101 horsepower without any electrical assistance, there's a mild-hybrid option producing 131 horsepower. For those seeking additional traction, the 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine is available with four-wheel drive, while the rest of the lineup comes with standard front-wheel drive.

The premium drive option features a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that, when combined with an electric motor and a starter generator, creates a full hybrid capable of delivering a system power of 140 horsepower through a multi-mode automatic transmission. Notably, this is the only Duster model equipped with an automatic gearbox, as the other variants are consistently operated with a manual 6-speed transmission.

Under the hood of the Frontera, a range of engines are available that are compatible with the affordable Smart-Car platform. The entry-level option is a 100 horsepower 48-volt mild hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) system, which pairs a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine with an electrified 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. Additionally, there is a similarly constructed model with 136 horsepower, and unlike the Duster, there's a fully electric version that boasts a range of 305 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. This electric variant features a 44-kWh LFP battery located in the underbody and delivers 113 horsepower to the front wheels.

The two competitors in the evaluation:

In contrast to its Citroën sibling, the C3 Aircross, the Opel will not offer a version that is entirely non-electrified. There are no intentions to create a 100 horsepower model with a 6-speed manual transmission for the Frontera either. However, there is a promise of a second electric option on the horizon. This one will boast increased power, a larger battery, and an approximate 400 km range according to WLTP standards. It's expected to be available by 2025.

Costs

When it comes down to it, pricing could likely be the decisive factor between these two competitors. In this area, both models come in hot. The Duster's pricing kicks off at 18,950 euros. That will get you the very basic "Essential" trim which includes a simple white paint job, steel wheels, and a manual air conditioning system, paired with a 101-hp LPG engine. If you opt for the fully loaded "Extreme" version complete with the Hybrid 140 engine, the price tag on this Dacia can soar up to 27,350 euros.

The Frontera by Opel lacks a genuine bare-bones option, and since it always includes some level of electric power and an automatic transmission, the starting price for the "Edition" model with a 100-hp MHEV system, striking "Kanyon Orange" metallic paint, and steel wheels is set at €23,900. The flagship is the all-electric "GS" variant, priced at €32,490, which can only be further increased in cost with the addition of a technology package for €1,000 and a three-phase onboard charger for €400.

Skoda: A Preview of What's New for 2025

The market will see the introduction of Elroq, while the more sizable Enyaq gets an update…

Skoda is gearing up to launch a wave of electric SUVs. The year 2025 will spotlight the Elroq and Enyaq models. The Elroq has been unveiled already and its sales are set to kick off in the early part of the year. Additionally, we're anticipating an updated version of the Enyaq.

Upcoming Skoda Elroq Model

Anticipated 2025 Skoda Elroq Release

The Skoda Elroq is anticipated to be one of the most eagerly awaited electric SUVs on the market. This excitement isn't just confined to the Volkswagen Group's offerings, but extends to the entire C-Segment. Measuring in at 4.49 meters and starting at a price point of €33,900, the Elroq is set to hit dealership floors in the first quarter of 2025, boasting a range of features that are particularly appealing for its class.

The Skoda boasts one of the lowest drag coefficients in its class at 0.26, offering power ranging from 168 to 299 horsepower. It comes with battery options from 55 to 82 kWh, allowing for a driving range of up to 560 kilometers.

Updated Skoda Enyaq Model

Spotted: Camouflaged Prototype of the Refreshed Skoda Enyaq

The brand's largest electric SUV is set for a refresh in early 2025. The Enyaq, which has been available since 2020, will receive a moderate makeover. Spy shots also reveal that updates are not limited to the standard body style; the coupe version, which was introduced on January 31, 2022, is also due for an upgrade.

There are likely to be minimal changes to the propulsion systems, possibly a slight increase in charging speed and a small bump in battery size. However, Skoda will mainly focus on enhancing the design. The Enyaq is set to adopt the same "Modern Solid" aesthetic as the Elroq. Inside, the larger sibling will take cues from its smaller counterpart.

Interestingly, the launch and the commencement of orders are happening simultaneously. It has been noted on the manufacturer's website that the latest Enyaq model will be available for orders starting January 2025, although the prices have yet to be disclosed.

Von Pick-up zu Familien-SUV: Toyotas 10.000-Dollar-Hilux mutiert in Indonesien zum Siebensitzer

Toyota's $10,000 pickup truck transforms into a seven-seater SUV

It is constructed by a customizer and sold through Toyota dealers in Indonesia

A year ago, Toyota introduced the Hilux Champ – a compact, affordable, and flexible pickup designed for the Asian market. Depending on the country, it's referred to as Rangga or Tamaraw. Regardless of the name, it's always the same chassis with a cabin, ready to have various add-ons attached behind the front seats.

The unique aspect of the Hilux Champ is its affordable price tag; the standard model comes in at just over 12,000 Euros. It was inevitable that a version with additional seating would emerge, and that's what we see here. This slightly awkward-looking SUV, known as the Hilux Rangga in Indonesia, features two rows of seats behind the driver's cabin, accommodating a total of seven passengers.

The passenger carrier, which was unveiled at the start of the year at the Indonesia International Auto Show, is constructed by a company called New Armada. This firm has a substantial background in manufacturing buses, yet their latest modification entails more than just the installation of seats and carpets. They've engineered the rear section to replicate the boxy design of the cab's body lines. The roof even extends beyond the top, offering a seamless shape that doesn't appear to be an aftermarket addition.

Inside the vehicle, there's room for three passengers in the middle row and two in the back. There is no specific information available on the amount of space, however, it appears to be somewhat cramped for both the middle and rear rows of seats. This comes as no surprise given that the Hilux Rangga, which features a long wheelbase, measures just 4.88 meters in length. For context, this is roughly equivalent to the length of a Ford Maverick.

Compact SUV offerings from Toyota for the European market:

The compact SUV offers a choice between a petrol engine or a diesel engine, the latter being the more powerful option with 148 horsepower. It powers only the rear wheels, however, driving purists will be glad to know that a five-speed manual transmission is an option. Given its boxy shape and oddly small wheels, we're not expecting it to offer the most thrilling driving experience. That might lead some to opt for the six-speed automatic transmission instead.

The latest Armada model features an SUV conversion, however, Toyota plans to distribute the Hilux Rangga SUV through its dealership network in Indonesia, with sales commencing in 2025.

Kia Tasman: Vom digitalen Spott zur realen Begeisterung – Eine Studie enthüllt die Wandlung des Tasman in den Augen der Betrachter

Kia's Tasman model receives positive feedback on its design

An internal survey has revealed that people prefer the Tasman's appearance in person over its press images. Following the release of the Tasman, Kia's head of Exterior Design mentioned that the vehicle might require some time to become endearing to people, noting its distinctiveness. John Buckingham stated that his team has designed something unique, emphasizing that it was intentionally crafted. Despite this, online comments haven't always been flattering.

The Korean brand has acknowledged that it initially encountered some "feedback" but it seems that perceptions are starting to shift. Kia Australia's marketing head, Dean Norbiato, noted that potential customers who experience the Tasman up close are revising their initial judgments about its design. "The more time they spend with the vehicle, the more their opinion evolves from their first impression at launch," he said. Internal research indicates that this new rival to the Ford Ranger is more appealing in person than in press images.

According to observations, there appears to be a distinct difference in perception between individuals who have viewed the vehicle in person versus those who have only seen a two-dimensional image of it.

The Tasman stands out from other trucks of its size due to its unique design. Its distinctive look is marked by headlights that are set widely apart and a protruding front end. Adjustments to the "eyebrow" fenders are already in the works. Kia has acknowledged the need to make a strong first impression to attract buyers who typically opt for models like the Ranger, Amarok, or Hilux. However, it seems unlikely that the Tasman will be available in Europe.

Regardless of its looks, whether unattractive, attractive, or somewhere in-between, the Tasman faces an uphill battle due to the fierce competition in a market controlled by well-established brands. This pick-up truck is up against the big players in its category and has to do so without the V6 engines that its rivals are equipped with. While the Ranger and the Hilux both have SUV counterparts, the Everest and the Fortuner, Kia will not have a comparable offering to these models.

Starting in 2025, the Tasman model will hit the market with single cabin, double cabin, and chassis cab options. There's an anticipated work-focused version featuring steel wheels, a snorkel, and a front protection bar. Both left-hand and right-hand drive versions will be available, along with 4×4 and 4×2 setups, manual and automatic transmissions, and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines have been engineered for this line.

Ford’s Diesel Dilemma: Massive Recall Amidst Emissions Scandal

Published

on

By

To enhance a more individualized experience

Ford faces another setback with the recall of nearly 770,000 diesel vehicles.

Ford's current crisis deepens with unwelcome diesel issue.

The string of bad news doesn't seem to end for major German car manufacturers. Ford, having recently admitted to facing significant challenges due to the sales slump of their electric models, now has to endure a massive recall. It turns out that emissions issues with their diesel engines are necessitating an unexpected trip to the service center for almost 770,000 Ford vehicle owners. What a blow…

Ford has issued a global recall for 768,927 diesel vehicles due to potential issues with the emissions control system. In Germany, 164,168 units across various model lines including B-Max, C-Max, Eco Sport, Fiesta, Focus, Galaxy, Grand C-Max, Kuga, Mondeo, Ranger, S-Max, Tourneo Connect, Transit Connect, and Transit Courier manufactured between 2014 and 2020 are impacted.

The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) informed the digital version of "Auto Motor und Sport" magazine that due to their design, Ford diesel models experience an increase in particulate matter in the exhaust as the vehicle ages.

In the repair shops, there is a recalibration of the diesel particulate filter regeneration taking place, along with inspections and replacements of the filters as necessary. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is in the process of informing all vehicle owners impacted by this issue. The recall is registered with the KBA under the reference number 14555R, and the manufacturer has assigned the code 24E06 to the action. Ford has set up a dedicated customer service line at 0221 / 9999 2999 for those affected. An increase in particle emissions from Ford diesel models was detected in mid-2023 with the adoption of a more advanced testing method, resulting in a growing number of Ford models failing the emissions test.

A spokesperson for Ford stated that faulty diesel particulate filters would be replaced as necessary to guarantee the enduring effectiveness of the exhaust after-treatment system. Following an analysis of a diesel particulate filter, the ADAC speculated that the software coordination between active and passive filter regeneration was not ideal. Ford has now clarified that hairline cracks, which are not visible to the naked eye, are the reason for the failures in emission tests.

Increased Number of Recalls:

Ford has announced plans to reach out to all impacted vehicle owners by the end of 2024. The recall process will start with the Ford Kuga equipped with the 2.0 Eco-Blue diesel engine and will proceed in stages for different models. Notably, owners who have already paid to replace their particulate filters might be eligible for compensation, although the amount will vary on a case-by-case basis and Ford hasn't disclosed any specific figures. Additionally, Ford is offering an extended guarantee of ten years or 160,000 km for the replacement of faulty diesel particulate filters using original parts for all affected vehicles.

Lamborghini Recharges Electric Vehicle Timeline: Market Awaits 2029 Lanzador Launch

Published

on

By

Lamborghini pushes back launch of inaugural electric vehicle to 2029, anticipating better market readiness, according to Reuters.

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann expressed to Reuters and various news organizations on Monday, from the company's base in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, that aiming for electric cars by 2029 is not a delayed target. He believes that the high-end car market segment won't be prepared for such a shift by 2025 or 2026.

Conceptual design of the Lamborghini Lanzador

Winkelmann mentioned that Lamborghini is anticipating further guidance on regulations in Europe. He noted that in 2026, the European Union is set to reassess its strategy to cease selling new vehicles powered by internal combustion engines by 2035, a move that Winkelmann thinks might provide Lamborghini with an exemption from having to fully transition to electric vehicles.

"The Lamborghini CEO mentioned that the conversation about synthetic fuels presents a chance for the types of vehicles they produce."

In 2023, Lamborghini announced that its initial electric vehicle will feature a 2+2 grand tourer design, aiming for a 300-mile driving range and a spacious back seat. Following this announcement, Lamborghini introduced the Lanzador concept as a sneak peek of the model, with plans to release it by 2028.

Concept design for the Lamborghini Lanzador

Lamborghini insists that its iconic supercars will be among the final models to adopt electric technology. The company intends to continue using plug-in hybrid systems for these vehicles at present, leaving fully electric engines for different types of cars. This perspective is echoed by competing brand McLaren. The CEO of the UK-based car manufacturer predicted in 2023 that a fully electric supercar wouldn't be feasible before 2030.

In the meantime, Ferrari, a long-standing competitor of Lamborghini, is progressing with its strategy to unveil a half-million-dollar electric vehicle. Anticipated to be introduced in 2025, this electric model from Ferrari will be manufactured at a newly constructed facility located just above their current premises in Maranello, Italy.

Ford and SK On Secure Record $9.63 Billion Government Loan to Energize US Battery Plant Production

Published

on

By

The government has approved a loan of $9.63 billion for the collaborative battery production endeavor between Ford and SK On, BlueOval SK, as per a Reuters article from Monday.

The updated loan sum surpasses the initial figure of $9.2 billion, as disclosed in June by The New York Times.

The Energy Department's loan, which is the biggest issued under President Biden's tenure for electric vehicle production, aims to fund the building of battery facilities in both Kentucky and Tennessee.

Ford declared in 2021 that it is inaugurating two massive production facilities, attributing the move to an unprecedented investment of $11.4 billion and the anticipated generation of close to 11,000 fresh employment opportunities. The car manufacturer, in partnership with SK On, stated that their collaborative enterprise, BlueOval SK, aims to achieve an annual battery cell output of 60 gigawatt-hours by mid-decade.

Artist's Impression of BlueOvalSK Battery Facility as of September 202

Ford's blueprint encompasses the establishment of Blue Oval City located in the western region of Tennessee, along with BlueOval SK Battery Park which will house a pair of battery manufacturing facilities within the same vicinity in the heart of Kentucky. In 2021, Ford announced intentions to construct these two facilities, targeting a functional status for both by the year 2025.

The expansive Blue Oval City complex is home to a trio of facilities: a battery factory, a hub for component providers, and a manufacturing site for assembling electric pickup trucks, such as the upcoming version of the F-150 Lightning. Meanwhile, SK On is actively producing battery cells for the existing model of the Lightning in Georgia.

The BlueOval SK Battery Park, located in the heart of Kentucky, will feature a duo of manufacturing facilities dedicated to creating battery cells specifically for upcoming electric vehicles from Ford and Lincoln.

Artist's Impression of BlueOvalSK Battery Park – September 2021

Besides the BlueOval SK facilities, Ford proclaimed in February a partnership with CATL to establish a $3.5 billion battery manufacturing site in Marshall, Michigan. The company is also persistently producing the Mustang Mach-E in Mexico, utilizing LG batteries obtained from a Polish plant.

The Department of Energy has issued its biggest loan to date through a rejuvenated initiative that previously backed companies like Tesla, Nissan, and Ford during Obama's tenure, but was overlooked during Trump's presidency. With President Biden at the helm, the department has allocated a $2 billion loan to Redwood Materials, a battery recycling firm founded by former Tesla executive JB Straubel, and a $2.5 billion loan to Ultium Cells LLC, a collaborative battery project between General Motors and LG.

Update – This report has been revised to include the updated loan figure as of December.

End of an Era: Audi to Cease Q8 E-Tron Production in February Amidst Shift to New EV Platforms

Published

on

By

Production of the Audi Q8 E-Tron to conclude in February

In the second month of the coming year, Audi is set to cease the production of the Q8 E-Tron, marking the conclusion of the electric SUV's journey which, under the initial E-Tron model, signaled the commencement of Audi's venture into electric vehicles.

According to initial coverage from Reuters, Audi's Brussels facility responsible for manufacturing the Q8 E-Tron is scheduled to cease operations by February 28. Efforts to sell the plant in Belgium have been unsuccessful, with Audi indicating to Reuters since November that no purchasers had come forward. Additionally, Automotive News had suggested in July that the future of the Q8 E-Tron could be in jeopardy.

Upcoming 2025 Audi Q8 Electric Model

It has been confirmed that the Q8 E-Tron's production is coming to an end and won't be transferred to a different factory. Audi has released the prices for its 2025 models, but according to a representative speaking to Green Car Reports, only the 2024 versions are present in Audi's stock in the United States. Whether the 2025 models will be accessible in the U.S. is contingent upon the allocation of any leftover production.

Audi intended to make minor updates to the features offered in 2025, along with a slight increase in the starting price by $600, setting it at $76,095, which encompasses a $1,295 charge for delivery.

2025 Model of the Audi Q8 E-Tron

The Q8 E-Tron, which debuted as part of the 2024 lineup, represents a significant refresh of Audi's inaugural mass-market electric vehicle, the E-Tron. It retains the positive features of its predecessor, such as the commendable safety scores, while offering enhanced driving dynamics and extended battery life. In its most aerodynamic Sportback variant, equipped with the Ultra Package that prioritizes efficiency, it boasted an EPA range of up to 300 miles. However, this package was slated for discontinuation in 2025, which would reduce the range to 272 miles.

The Q8 E-Tron, despite being built on the same MLB platform used for combustion engine vehicles, is part of Audi's growing collection of unique EV-specific platforms. The more affordable Q4 E-Tron is constructed on the MEB platform, which it shares with Volkswagen's electric vehicles such as the ID.4. The E-Tron GT utilizes the J1 platform, which is also the foundation for the Porsche Taycan. Upcoming models, the Q6 E-Tron and the A6 E-Tron, will be based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), a platform they will share with the electric version of the Porsche Macan. It is anticipated that PPE will form the cornerstone for future Audi electric vehicles, potentially including any successor to the Q8 E-Tron.

RollAway Charges Ahead: The Silicon Valley Startup Revolutionizing the RV Rental Market with Electric Fleet

Published

on

By

RollAway sets its sights on being the EV equivalent of Cruise America

The dream of RV ownership is common among Americans, though opting for rentals from providers such as Cruise America remains a favored choice. A new startup from Silicon Valley is now stepping up to present an electric option.

In 2023, RollAway emerged on the scene with the intention of leasing a range of electric recreational vehicles crafted from General Motors' BrightDrop vans. As of the current week, the company has started taking bookings via their website, according to Electrek. However, it seems that the rental schedule is nearly full until autumn 2025, as indicated on their platform.

Electric-powered motorhome hires from RollAway

Customers who have booked in advance will receive access to an electric recreational vehicle that RollAway believes can travel up to 270 miles on a single charge, surpassing the initial 250-mile estimate provided in 2023. The design features a rear door that can be rolled up to reveal a sizable panoramic view, and RollAway intends to provide additional amenities similar to those found in hotels, including a digital concierge service, options for breakfast, and the ability to purchase extra toiletries and bedding.

The concept of renting is a fresh approach that targets a significant market segment, yet RollAway is not the pioneer in transforming GM's BrightDrop vans into recreational vehicles. In 2023, the Detroit startup known as Grounded unveiled its own version of a BrightDrop RV, which offers a more modest level of luxury.

Electric motorhome rentals from RollAway.

Mercedes-Benz's vans have consistently been favored for recreational vehicle conversions, and the company plans to maintain this trend by introducing its new line of electric vans in 2026.

Transforming commercial vans into recreational vehicles still produces models that are more compact compared to conventional RVs, and the transition to fully-electric for these massive units seems to be on a longer timeline, largely because the existing charging networks aren't equipped for these bigger types of vehicles. For now, RVs with a hybrid plug-in option, such as the one showcased by Thor Industries, the company that owns Airstream, at the start of this year, might offer a solution for those seeking an electric motorhome, while also tackling the issue of charging logistics.

Hyundai Kona Electric Races for Green Car Reports’ Best Car to Buy 2025 Amid Sparse Competition

Published

on

By

The Hyundai Kona Electric has secured a spot as a finalist for Green Car Reports' Best Car To Buy in 2025. This vehicle stands out in the current American EV landscape for offering spaciousness and affordability in a compact car, while also delivering impressive mileage from a relatively small battery.

The Kona Electric doesn't have its own unique platform specifically for electric vehicles, however, it could easily be confused for one. Even though it's only 171.5 inches long, it can comfortably accommodate four adults, or even five for short trips. The design is cleverly done, providing a spacious 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats, which expands to 63.7 cubic feet when those seats are folded down.

In its latest iteration, the electric version of the Kona surpasses its gas-powered siblings in terms of dynamism, smoothness, and sophistication, with the exception of the entry-level SE model. Equipped with a lively 201-horsepower electric motor powering the front wheels, it offers a nimble and engaging driving experience. The vehicle boasts sleek, contemporary instrumentation and controls that seem to be a direct transfer from Hyundai's latest electric vehicles, the Ioniq 5 and 6. Every variant features an expansive 12.3-inch touchscreen interface, seamless integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without the need for wires, an integrated wifi hotspot, the ability to receive updates wirelessly, and V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality that extends to all models, providing up to 3.6 kW of alternating current for powering tools at job sites, camping gear, and more.

2024 Model of Hyundai Kona Powered by

2024 Model of Hyundai's Electric Kona

2024 Model of the Hyundai Kona Electric

The Kona Electric operates on a 400-volt system, which differs from the 800-volt system used by the Ioniq models and the E-GMP platform. However, its ability to charge from 10% to 80% in just 43 minutes via DC fast-charging is commendable for city drivers who sometimes venture onto the highway.

The Kona Electric emerges as a prime choice for those seeking a modern electric vehicle, particularly with the Chevrolet Bolt EV off the market until at least the end of 2025 or the 2026 model year. This segment – offering a combination of affordability and compact size – is relatively underrepresented in the US. Pricing for the Kona Electric begins at $34,270, which includes a $1,395 fee for delivery. This price is for the base SE model, equipped with a 48.6-kwh battery and a 200-mile range as rated by the EPA. The SEL variant is priced at $38,270 and upgrades to a 64.8-kwh battery with a 261-mile range. It also adds features like heated front seats and an adjustable power driver seat, making it the likely choice for those eyeing this vehicle.

The N Line models, with athletic styling enhancements and Bose high-quality sound system, begin at a price point of $40,270. On the other end, the premium Limited models are priced at $42,445 and include features like an automatic tailgate, a 360-degree camera setup, and extra safety features. Yet, at this cost, one encounters similar cost-effectiveness issues previously highlighted in relation to the Kia Niro EV.

Upcoming Electric Hyundai Kona Model for

There are few rivals in the market—the aging Nissan Leaf, the two-door Fiat 500e, and the more sizable Mini Countryman SE ALL4 that has a starting price of $46,195, all compete with the Kona. The much-anticipated Volvo EX30, expected to have a starting price of $36,245, will likely pose a significant challenge to the Kona Electric once it's finally released.

Will the Hyundai Kona Electric stand out sufficiently in the electric vehicle market to surpass the other four contenders for the Best Car To Buy 2025 award? Stay tuned for updates on January 6.

Mercedes-Benz Unveils Electric Future: Van.EA Concept to Lead the Charge in Spring 2025

Published

on

By

Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil a concept vehicle this spring that will showcase its Van.EA electric van design.

On Friday, the car manufacturer announced its intention for the van design, sharing a preview that suggests the concept, along with the forthcoming electric vans it signifies, will have an appearance that clearly reflects their nature, despite being built on a unique electric vehicle framework.

Mercedes vans will introduce Van.EA as their pioneering electric vehicle (EV) platform, a shift from their present strategy of selling the eSprinter and several smaller models exclusive to Europe, which are built on frameworks originally designed for fuel-powered vehicles.

Prototypes of Mercedes-Benz Van.EA as seen through Mercedes-Benz.

In October, Mercedes revealed images of disguised test models in preparation for their production debut in 2026. Post that launch, Mercedes plans to base all its forthcoming electric vans on the Van.EA platform. This platform utilizes a common collection of parts and modules suitable for both medium and large-sized vans.

The units are designed with three primary segments, where the front and back segments can accommodate electric motors. Models equipped with a single motor will have front-wheel propulsion, while there will also be an option for dual-motor variants that provide power to all wheels.

Mercedes has designs on a broad range of uses for their vehicles, encompassing commercial models such as delivery vans to an electric high-end van aimed at the American market. Additionally, Mercedes is exploring the possibility of transforming RVs into electric versions, tapping into an already profitable segment for their petrol and diesel-powered vans.

Mercedes is set to unveil multiple electric vehicle (EV) frameworks in the coming years, which includes Van.EA. In addition to this, there's the MMA platform designed for smaller vehicles such as the 2026 Mercedes CLA, and the AMG.EA platform that will underpin electric vehicles from Mercedes' high-performance AMG line, featuring models like a sporty fastback sedan and an electric SUV.

Survey Reveals 92% of EV Owners Won’t Go Back to Gas: The Future of Electric Loyalty

Published

on

By

Research indicates that a mere 1% of electric vehicle consumers would consider reverting to traditional gasoline vehicles. This finding emerges from a recent poll conducted by the Global EV Alliance, a collective of electric vehicle driver groups from 38 nations.

According to the study, an overwhelming 92% of existing electric vehicle owners intend to purchase another electric vehicle when it's time for a new car. A mere 1% would switch back to a traditional gasoline or diesel vehicle if they had to make an immediate replacement, and only 4% would think about getting a plug-in hybrid as an alternative to their current electric vehicle.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) come equipped with a petrol engine, which drivers who have previously owned an all-electric vehicle may view as a secondary power option.

Upcoming 2024 version of the Tesla Model Y, presented by Tesla, Inc.

The study utilized data from 23,000 individuals across 18 nations, collected from August 27 to November 20, 2024. The results were adjusted in proportion to the size of each country's electric vehicle (EV) fleet. The United States' data, for instance, was given greater emphasis, while Sweden's was scaled back, to mirror each nation's respective EV market size, as clarified by the Global EV Alliance in an official statement.

The primary attraction for EV owners to stick with electric vehicles was the benefit of reduced running expenses, as cited by 45% of participants when asked about their intentions to purchase another EV. Additionally, the reduced environmental footprint of EVs was a significant consideration for 40% of those surveyed, while 32% also valued the positive effect on the immediate surroundings and the quieter operation of these vehicles.

2023 Redline Edition of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV

The findings seem positive for the uptake of electric vehicles, yet with studies of this nature, there's a lot left to decipher. This includes how questions are formulated when inquiring about consumers' intentions to purchase post their initial EV, and if it actually substitutes an EV or a different car in their home.

According to recent research by S&P Global Mobility in 2023, excluding Tesla, about 50% of families with electric vehicles opted for a traditional gasoline-powered car when acquiring their next automobile, partially because of the limited selection of electric models from other manufacturers. Moreover, the Department of Energy highlighted earlier in the year that electric vehicles in the U.S. are not being used as extensively as their gasoline counterparts, suggesting that they may not be replacing them on a one-for-one basis.
