New Labour Defence Secretary Rapidly Boosts UK Support for Ukraine, Pledges Fresh Military Aid

Defence Minister John Healey recently held a meeting with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which the Labour-led government announced a new commitment to provide arms to Ukraine.
The newly appointed Labour minister made his way to Ukraine shortly after receiving his position last Friday.
During his trip to Odesa, he held meetings with President Zelenskyy and Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

During his trip, Mr. Healey committed to providing missiles, boats, artillery, and ammunition.
He further assured that the devices previously declared by Rishi Sunak in April would be provided within the initial 100 days of the new administration.
The latest aid package announced for Ukraine features a variety of military support items, including:
• 250,000 rounds of .50 caliber ammunition;
• 90 Brimstone missiles designed for targeting armor;
• 50 compact military vessels for riverine and coastal tasks;
• 40 vehicles equipped for removing mines;
• 10 AS-90 artillery guns;
• 61 bulldozers intended for constructing defensive structures;
• Maintenance support for AS-90 artillery guns previously provided.
Mr. Healey stated, "Despite the shift in leadership, the UK remains committed to supporting Ukraine."
"As the newly appointed defence secretary, I am committed to rejuvenating the UK's assistance by increasing the provision of essential military support."
"We are unwavering in our support for the Ukrainian people and equally determined to address Russian hostility and hold Putin accountable for his actions in the war."
"This administration remains resolute in its pledge to provide ongoing military support and will remain in unwavering solidarity with our Ukrainian allies for the duration."
The United Kingdom has allocated over £7.6 billion in military aid to Ukraine following Russia's invasion in early 2022.
Since that summer, over 42,000 Ukrainian troops have received training in the UK through Operation Interflex.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the head of the defense staff, stated: "The significant figure of half a million Russian casualties underscores the extent of Russia's struggles in this conflict. Over the last year, with support from Britain, Ukraine has successfully expelled the Russian navy from Crimea and restored access to the Black Sea for export purposes."
