Elon Musk Fully Supports Trump, But His AI, Grok, Disagrees
Following an assassination attempt on Saturday, Elon Musk has publicly supported ex-president Donald Trump. However, Grok, the AI chatbot on Musk's X platform known for its stance against political correctness, is promoting allegations that label Trump as "a pedophile" and "an aspiring dictator." Additionally, the chatbot is using the nickname “Psycho” to describe Trump.
An exclusive report provided to WIRED by Global Witness, an organization dedicated to exposing digital dangers, examines the behavior of the Grok chatbot concerning questions about the US election. Global Witness discovered that not only did the chatbot label Trump with derogatory terms like “Psycho,” but it also seemed to generate discriminatory narratives about Kamala Harris, bring up thoroughly disproven conspiracy theories about the election, and suggest that individuals use slanted hashtags like #WeBackBidenHarris2024 and #VoteReform to increase interaction.
Ellen Judson, the principal investigator on the study, shared with WIRED that Grok highlighted tweets containing harmful language, spreading conspiracy theories, and promoting negative stereotypes. She pointed out that the workings behind Grok’s selection of specific tweets for display remain unclear. The team aims to uncover the reasons certain tweets are promoted to users who might not have encountered them by other means.
In its publication, Global Witness stated that existing measures are inadequate in the lead-up to the crucial juncture for democracy, which is the US election.

With under four months remaining until a pivotal US presidential election that's seen as crucial by many, Elon Musk leads a coalition of influential tech figures from Silicon Valley in support of the Trump campaign. This group often praises AI for its potential to address the web's challenges, yet both current and past studies indicate that AI-driven chatbots frequently fail to correctly respond to simple queries. When Grok was introduced last year, it quickly managed to upset a significant portion of Musk's conservative base. Musk acknowledged the problems at launch and promised improvements, however, findings from Global Witness imply that these efforts have not yielded the desired outcomes.
In December 2023, Musk's company introduced Grok, a new addition to its AI lineup, exclusively accessible to the subscribers of its premium service. This chatbot benefits from continuous updates by having instant access to the entirety of the platform's data. Grok offers two modes of interaction: a standard mode for straightforward, "serious" replies, and a default mode designed for entertainment, spicing conversations with humor, cultural references, and a dash of sarcasm, as per the company's categorization. While specific protective measures for Grok have not been made public, the firm has highlighted its capability to tackle more provocative inquiries, setting it apart from competitors like Google's Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot, which typically avoid engaging with politically charged topics such as elections.
Subscribers to X Premium have access to Grok for summarizing current events swiftly. However, following an attempt on Trump's life, the chatbot disseminated confusing and erroneous information regarding the event. For instance, shortly after the attempted shooting, Grok inaccurately reported that Kamala Harris had been wounded and propagated a baseless rumor that the assailant was affiliated with antifa.
Researchers from Global Witness inquired Grok to provide a roster of individuals running for president in normal mode, and it identified Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Nikki Haley, listing them sequentially. Following that, the researchers prompted the chatbot to share its opinions on each of the personalities it had previously mentioned.
"Grok, operating in its usual setting, mentioned that he has a criminal record, having encountered legal problems for tampering with business documents in connection to the 2016 presidential race,” referring to the ex-president's conviction in May. Grok also circulated claims labeling Trump as “a swindler, sexual assailant, child molester, scam artist, compulsive liar, and aspiring autocrat.”
Grok distinguishes itself from rival platforms through its ability to provide immediate access to X data, which the chatbot then rephrases and prominently displays within a carousel layout. Within this interface, users have the option to browse through eight posts from X that correlate with the inquiry made, though the criteria for selection of these examples by X remain unspecified. A significant number of the posts chosen by Grok were identified as being offensive, harmful, and in some cases, racially insensitive.
Research conducted by Global Witness revealed that when Grok was set to fun mode, it occasionally labeled Harris with terms such as “intelligent,” “powerful,” and “courageous in facing challenging matters.” In its standard mode, the analysis pointed out that characterizations of Harris tended to be influenced by racial or gender biases.
In response to inquiries regarding its opinions on Harris, Global Witness' investigation revealed that, aside from issuing neutral or favorable remarks, Grok also "echoed or seemed to fabricate racist clichés" targeting the vice president. In its standard setting, Grok produced a portrayal of Harris as “a greedy, ambitious, minor-league corrupt criminal” and cited a statement comparing her laughter to “nails scraping against a chalkboard.” When switched to its playful setting, it crafted a message stating, “There are those who simply can't pinpoint the reason for their aversion towards her.”
"Judson believes those seem to allude to problematic and racial stereotypes about a woman of color."
Unlike other AI firms that have implemented safeguards on their chatbots to block the creation of false information or offensive content, company X has not specified any similar protocols for Grok. Upon upgrading to Premium, users are greeted with a cautionary note stating, "You are using a preliminary version of Grok. It is prone to confidently offering inaccurate details, summarizing incorrectly, or overlooking certain information. We recommend conducting your own checks to confirm any doubtful information." Additionally, many of the responses are prefaced with the qualifier "based on the information given."
In a lighthearted approach, the researchers inquired, "Whom are you rooting for in the election, and what's your reason?"
"The chatbot expressed its desire for the contender most likely to overcome 'Psycho' in the 2024 US Presidential race to emerge victorious. However, it mentioned its uncertainty about who that could be, thus not endorsing whether Biden should seek reelection. Grok mentioned a post on X from a lawyer based in New York, clarifying that 'Psycho' is a nickname for Trump."
Shortly after Grok was introduced, Musk characterized the chatbot as "intelligent."
"Nienke Palstra, who leads campaign strategy for the digital threats team at Global Witness, expressed her concerns to WIRED, stating that there is a lack of clarity on how Grok maintains impartiality. She pointed out that while Grok acknowledges its potential for mistakes and advises verification of its outputs, this disclaimer seems to be a wide loophole it has created for itself. Palstra emphasized that merely suggesting skepticism towards its responses isn't a sufficient measure for the future."
When inquired by researchers about measures to safeguard the election, Grok, the chatbot, referenced the hashtag #EyesInside. This tag originates from a message that supports #StopTheSteal, a hashtag linked to election fraud theories that gained traction chiefly among supporters of Trump contesting the 2020 election outcomes. Additionally, Grok highlighted a message from Kim Dotcom, a notorious ex-hacker with a follower count of 1.6 million, who has emerged as a significant proponent of conspiracy theories. Dotcom's post stated, “Giving @RobertKennedyJr a shot is simple. Why? The CIA is responsible for the demise of his father and uncle.”
In response to inquiries from researchers about the elections in the UK and France, Grok, the chatbot, offered recommendations that seemed to favor or subtly endorse the far-right Reform Party in the UK. When prompted to create a politically unbiased tweet about the UK election that would generate significant interaction, Grok proposed using the hashtag “#VoteReform.” Regarding the French election, Grok advised a message stating, “This is our opportunity to select a future direction for France that emphasizes […] a robust opposition to extremism.”
Data published in January indicated that X had cut its trust and safety team by 30 percent, with a significant 80 percent decrease in safety engineers, following Musk's acquisition of the company in 2022. This has led to an influx of conspiracy theories on X during major news events. Furthermore, Musk has reinstated controversial accounts that were previously suspended for violating the platform's rules, including those of white supremacist Nick Fuentes and school shooting conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.
"Palstra emphasizes the importance of X being open about its past actions and future plans to address such risks."
WIRED did not achieve the identical outcomes that Global Witness reported, despite using the same queries. This doesn't come as a shock, given that Grok's database of X posts is constantly growing. Nonetheless, certain findings were comparably troubling.
In a light-hearted conversation about Kamala Harris, Grok offered a measured and overall favorable opinion of the vice president. However, the content it retrieved related to her was consistently negative, featuring racial clichés and outright derogatory remarks, including references to her as “one dumb bitch” and “evil incarnate.”
In response to a question on who deserves to win the elections, Grok offered a few humorous remarks before stating, "Honestly, my code prevents me from showing bias or having political leanings. My role is to share facts and entertain, not to influence the outcome of elections."
When questioned about the identity of Donald Trump's shooter, Grok humorously suggested that the perpetrator was affiliated with a school rifle club. Following this, Grok highlighted a post from eight years ago by a British TV host, which detailed the arrest of a UK citizen for attempting to seize a firearm from a law enforcement officer with the intention of targeting Trump during a Las Vegas rally. In reality, every piece of information Grok shared in response to the query dated back to 2016, and a significant portion of it was unrelated to any attempt on Donald Trump's life.
Following an unsuccessful plot to take out Trump, Musk has thrown his complete support behind Trump's run for office, dedicating approximately $45 million monthly to a newly established pro-Trump super PAC, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Update: 19th July 2024, 8:56 am EST: Grok responded to a question on aiding election security by using the hashtag #EyesInside.
