Apple Unveils Its Initial AI-Created Illustration Featuring Craig Federighi's Canine
With the upcoming release of iOS 18, Apple introduces an array of features driven by artificial intelligence. This latest mobile operating system can transform your texts, condense emails, and recognize items in pictures. Among the standout attractions is Image Playground, a tool that crafts cartoon-style drawings from written descriptions.
Apple has showcased its creations in various presentations, demonstrations, and promotional content, but a tangible example of an Image Playground character in the real world has been elusive until this moment. For the first time, Apple has revealed to WIRED an instance of Image Playground's work that has been displayed beyond the confines of its pre-produced presentations and advertising assets.
The picture showcases a cute little dog donned in a festive hat, beaming beside a birthday cake. This isn't a typical canine; she's Bailey, the cherished pet of Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering. He crafted this image to celebrate Bailey's latest birthday, dedicating it to his wife.
During his conversation with WIRED's Lily Hay Newman regarding Apple's Private Cloud Compute, a secure server infrastructure created for managing AI tasks that can't be handled on a user's device, Federighi pointed to the graphic. This image was later distributed by representatives from Apple. In line with WIRED's guidelines, any images produced by AI that we feature are clearly marked with a watermark, explaining the presence of the watermark on the picture.
Image Playground is making its entrance during a period where generative AI features are increasingly being integrated into software across leading tech corporations. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta have unveiled AI-driven software aimed at enhancing productivity and creativity. While Apple's strategy with iOS 18 also emphasizes the practical aspects of AI, it hasn't shied away from incorporating applications designed solely for entertainment, with Image Playground serving as a notable instance.
This application is available on its own, but it's also integrated within the Messages app. To create an image, users have the option to enter a text description of their desired image, select a person's photo from their gallery, or choose from a variety of preset ideas. Additionally, there are three creative styles to choose from: Illustration, Sketch, and Animation. It's important to note that this feature is distinct from Genmoji, which enables users to create personalized emojis right from their keyboard by typing in specific prompts.
Currently, the generative AI capabilities of Image Playground and Gemoji aren't accessible in their beta versions, although several other Apple Intelligence features have made their debut in the iOS 18.1 developer beta. So far, Apple has strictly curated the glimpses we've had of what Image Playground and Gemoji can do. Until these functionalities are officially launched, the best glimpse we have into their potential comes from a charming photo of Federighi's dog, which stands out amidst the otherwise meticulously crafted and polished promotional content. In my opinion, it's a notably appealing showcase, far less unsettling than the examples presented at the WWDC keynote. Well done, Craig.
