Mercedes to Reintroduce Upgraded F1 Package at Zandvoort After Spa Setback
Mercedes announces a change of direction in F1 enhancements following the emergence of issues at Spa
Mercedes outlines their strategy to bring back their Spa improvement for the Zandvoort race happening later in the month.
Mercedes intends to introduce their latest Formula 1 improvements during the upcoming race at the Dutch Grand Prix when the season kicks off again later this month.
Mercedes switched back to their Silverstone setup after initially unveiling a new floor and additional updates on Friday at the Belgian Grand Prix.
This occurred as Mercedes faced speed difficulties at Spa-Francorchamps, experiencing oscillations in fast corners.
Initially, it was hinted that Mercedes faced issues with their car bouncing, similar to the challenges Ferrari encountered following their latest floor modification.
Nonetheless, Andrew Shovlin, the chief engineer at the racetrack, doesn't believe the improvements were entirely responsible for the issues they encountered.
"He mentioned in the team's most recent post-race analysis video, "That's our plan." He explained that the decision to switch the car back to the Silverstone configuration on Friday night stemmed from their successful performance at Silverstone. According to him, Spa and Silverstone circuits don't significantly differ regarding the range of corner speeds encountered.
"It was evident that we had encountered some issues along the way. We believe this was primarily a result of the way the car was operated in Spa, rather than the updates causing the problems."
"We experienced some instability during the fast turns, along with a couple of problems regarding the vehicle's equilibrium. However, switching to the Silverstone model restored everything to its usual state."
This strategy turned out to be a brilliant move, resulting in Lewis Hamilton securing his second win of the 2024 Formula 1 season. This came after Mercedes achieved a one-two finish on the track, which was later adjusted following George Russell's disqualification.
Mercedes intends to analyze the data over the summer hiatus as they prepare for a reintroduction at Zandvoort.
"After taking a moment to review and comprehend our actions through the data, we feel quite sure about planning a comeback in Zandvoort," he further mentioned.
Red Bull leads in race victories in 2024, with Mercedes trailing closely behind. This is a significant improvement for Mercedes, considering they didn't secure any podium positions until the Canadian Grand Prix in June.
