Mercedes Eyes Consistent Performance Gains Ahead of Azerbaijan GP: Wolff Optimistic After Challenging Races
Mercedes aims to achieve better performance following essential lessons learned before the Baku race. "We demonstrated strong speed during certain periods over the past two weekends, but struggled to maintain it consistently."
Mercedes Formula 1 chief Toto Wolff is optimistic that his team can more reliably harness the bursts of speed they've displayed in the past few weeks as they prepare for the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Following their victories in three out of the last four races before the summer hiatus, Mercedes found themselves unable to compete at the forefront during the events at Zandvoort and Monza.
Mercedes encountered difficulties managing the W15 during the Dutch Grand Prix, expressing uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of their recent floor upgrade.
Despite securing third place in the qualifiers for the Italian Grand Prix, George Russell experienced a disappointing weekend due to a slow start and inferior race speed compared to Ferrari and McLaren.
Anticipating the upcoming weekend in Baku, Wolff is hopeful that Mercedes will be able to implement the needed enhancements.
“We’re going to Baku with hopes of delivering a stronger performance than what we had in Zandvoort and Monza,” stated Wolff. “Those races were challenging for us. Our speed compared to others wasn’t as good as it was before the summer break, and some of our rivals improved.”
“We demonstrated strong speed at various points during both weekends, but we struggled to maintain this consistently.
"Since then, we've been assessing the reasons behind it. We now have the chance to demonstrate that we've learned from it and made improvements for this weekend's event in Azerbaijan and next week's in Singapore."
Mercedes are currently in fourth place in the constructors’ championship, with eight races remaining.
Mercedes is currently 115 points behind Ferrari, which means they are likely heading towards their worst position in the constructors' standings since 2012.
Looking forward to the rest of the season, Wolff commented: "Each of these street circuits presents its own difficulties. The tracks are uneven, featuring numerous tight, low-speed turns and 90-degree angles, but they also include several high-speed stretches."
"They present a completely different challenge compared to what we encountered in the Netherlands and Italy. We've now completed the traditional European segment of the season. Ahead of us are eight overseas races before the final race in Abu Dhabi. Our goal is to finish the season on a high note."
"There are still many races ahead, and we will strive to earn every point we can, beginning this weekend in Baku."
