Mercedes Eyes Consistent Performance Boost Ahead of Azerbaijan GP After Recent Struggles
Mercedes aims to improve their performance following essential lessons learned before the Baku race. They demonstrated strong speed at times during both weekends but struggled to maintain this consistently.
Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes F1, is optimistic that his team can more consistently harness the bursts of speed they've demonstrated in the past few weeks as they prepare for the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend.
Following a series of victories in three out of the last four races before the summer hiatus, Mercedes did not compete for the top spots at Zandvoort or Monza.
Mercedes faced challenges with the W15's handling during the Dutch Grand Prix, expressing uncertainty about the effectiveness of their recent floor upgrade.
Despite George Russell securing the third position in the qualifiers for the Italian Grand Prix, his overall performance for the weekend was disappointing due to a slow start and insufficient race speed compared to Ferrari and McLaren.
As the Baku event approaches this weekend, Wolff is hopeful that Mercedes will be able to implement the required enhancements.
"We're going to Baku with the goal of improving on our performances in Zandvoort and Monza," Wolff stated. "Those races were challenging for us. Our speed wasn't as competitive as it had been before the summer break, and some of our rivals made significant progress."
"We demonstrated strong speed at various points during both weekends, but we struggled to maintain this level consistently."
"We've dedicated time to understanding the reasons behind this. Now, we can demonstrate that we've learned what was needed and made enhancements for this weekend in Azerbaijan and next week in Singapore."
Mercedes currently holds the fourth position in the constructors' championship with eight races remaining.
Mercedes is behind Ferrari by 115 points, suggesting they are headed for their poorest performance in the constructors' championship since 2012.
Anticipating the rest of the season, Wolff commented: "Both upcoming street tracks present a tough challenge. They are uneven, filled with numerous low-speed and sharp 90-degree turns, yet they also include several high-speed segments."
"They present a unique challenge compared to what we encountered in the Netherlands and Italy. With the European segment of the season now completed, we are gearing up for eight international races leading up to the final event in Abu Dhabi. Our aim is to finish the season on a high note."
"There are still many races ahead, and we will be competing for every available point, beginning this weekend in Baku."
