Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Drought with Dominant Victory at Aragon MotoGP
Marc Marquez admitted he felt self-imposed pressure to achieve an impeccable performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He revealed that during the Sprint, he couldn't savor the moment because he was acutely aware of the day's significance.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect" afterwards.
Marquez led all three practice runs, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, achieved a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session where Marquez didn’t lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, and he didn’t record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez mentioned during the post-race press conference. "We were at the forefront in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up. To be honest, the team and I chose to remain in the garage for that part."
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"We had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race," he remarked. "The race was extremely lengthy, and it was challenging to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, achieving this victory felt unbelievable. Instantly, my mind went to the entire journey we had, all the people supporting me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me a chance. I came in as a novice rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and are continuing to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to ponder various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But more than the podium, it was the Gresini garage that came to mind. It's always lively and cheerful there, like a constant celebration."
"Additionally, the main factor was the support from those around me. During extremely tough times, being surrounded by a compassionate and genuinely kind team, who were even more distressed than I was, made all the difference."
The celebration felt quite unusual, as in other races the adrenaline was much higher, even when finishing in second or third place. Today, however, it was more about emotion rather than adrenaline.
Marc Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix after leading every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
“I felt the weight of expectations today,” he remarked. “Yesterday during the Sprint, I couldn’t enjoy it because I was aware that today would be crucial and knew that I had a significant chance ahead of me.”
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay concentrated. When you possess the necessary speed, it seems like you can handle the circumstances well, maintain consistency, and make smart decisions; however, you remain the same person. Without that speed, it becomes extremely challenging to manage the situation."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading competitors."
Having secured the win, Marquez regards it as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback following an arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez compared it to the 2021 event in Germany, saying they were on a similar level.
"When facing numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win becomes greater."
"Although I have won 60 times, those two victories, along with my first MotoGP win, are the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way, providing an extra sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, in the zone, but I made sure to stay highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had felt a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez came to the conclusion that a race victory is on the horizon. He noted that they will have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
