Lewis Hamilton Optimistic About Mercedes Direction Despite Lag Behind McLaren at British GP
Lewis Hamilton maintains that Mercedes is "heading the right way" even though there is a 0.6-second gap with McLaren. He commented, "Overall, it felt good, just not as quick as the McLaren drivers in front."
Lewis Hamilton remains optimistic about Mercedes' progress, even though they were six-tenths of a second slower than McLaren during Friday's F1 practice session at the British Grand Prix.
Lando Norris took control of both practice sessions on Friday at Silverstone, positioning McLaren as the leading team for this weekend's events.
Mercedes showcased remarkable speed during the first practice session, especially considering they chose not to use the soft tires.
During the second practice session, Hamilton secured the sixth-fastest time, whereas his teammate George Russell finished in 10th place.
Even more concerning, the distance to Norris was slightly more than 0.6 seconds.
Looking back on his Friday at Silverstone, Hamilton felt satisfied with how his Mercedes performed.
“I felt okay,” he stated. “Overall, I felt good, but I just couldn't keep up with the speed of the McLaren drivers ahead of me.”
Regarding Mercedes' enhancements for this weekend, they have unveiled updated front and rear wings, which are described as being tailored to the specific demands of the circuit.
Hamilton minimized their importance, calling them “minor adjustments” but maintained that Mercedes is heading in the right direction despite the considerable gap to McLaren.
"We don't have any upgrades," he clarified. "We only have minor adjustments to certain things, but they aren't exactly upgrades."
The person explained that although they are making progress with each improvement, their competitors are also advancing simultaneously. They mentioned being about six and a half tenths behind in the recent instance, though they weren't certain of the precise gap. They acknowledged that more effort is needed to catch up.
In the Mercedes garage, Russell believes the team’s situation is comparable to that of the last few races.
"This morning went very well," he remarked. "The car performed excellently. However, we faced more challenges in the afternoon and need to figure out the reasons. The wind picked up, and we didn't manage the tires as effectively. Our competitiveness was about the same as in recent races."
"The first practice session went very well. We need to figure out why we slowed down a bit in the second session. With the weather changing and rain coming in now, I’m sure things will be different tomorrow. I'm just glad to be here and looking forward to the race."
