Charles Leclerc drops the time in Monaco's second practice, with Lewis Hamilton trailing closely…
Charles Leclerc outpaced Lewis Hamilton, topping the charts in Friday's second practice session at the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.
Local hero Leclerc, in pursuit of his first victory in Monaco, clocked multiple rapid laps, propelling his Ferrari to the forefront of the leaderboard with a record-setting time of 1 minute, 11.278 seconds.
On occasion, the driver from Monaco was almost a second quicker than the rest of the field, yet Hamilton, who was the fastest in the first practice session, managed to close the gap on Leclerc's lead to a mere 0.188 seconds.
Fernando Alonso secured a promising third place for his Aston Martin, lagging behind by 0.475 seconds.
Leclerc's speed offers significant encouragement to Ferrari as they aim to challenge Red Bull in the upcoming weekend. Additionally, he experienced a few close calls, narrowly escaping collisions with the barriers in his efforts to maximize performance.
The session proved challenging once again for the current world champion, Max Verstappen, who finished fifth, trailing Leclerc by more than half a second.
Similar to his performance in FP1, Verstappen seemed somewhat uncomfortable in his Red Bull vehicle, brushing against the wall following a skid at Portier, yet he managed to avoid any harm.
Verstappen started the weekend by minimizing expectations for Red Bull's performance in Monaco, hinting that the narrow, winding streets of Monte Carlo might reveal certain flaws in his vehicle.
Nonetheless, it's important to highlight that both Red Bull and Verstappen faced significant challenges at the outset of the previous weekend's Imola race, yet a remarkable recovery eventually set the stage for another triumphant win.
Lando Norris secured the fifth position in his McLaren, followed by Carlos Sainz in a Ferrari and Lance Stroll from Aston Martin, with Sergio Perez trailing by nearly a second in the eighth spot.
The Mexican driver voiced his frustrations over the team radio, expressing difficulties with his RB20 as he battled through the race.
Alex Albon and George Russell finished within the top 10 for Williams and Mercedes, respectively.
