Lando Norris Retracts Apology Demand from Max Verstappen After Austrian GP Incident: ‘We’ve Talked About It
Lando Norris reverses stance on requiring an apology from Max Verstappen: "We've discussed it"
"I'm not looking for an apology from him. I don't believe he owes one."
Lando Norris has reconsidered his demand for Max Verstappen to issue an apology after their intense incident at the Austrian Grand Prix, following a discussion with the Red Bull Formula 1 driver.
Norris and Verstappen made contact as they approached Turn 3 on the 64th lap of the race at the Red Bull Ring.
Max Verstappen received a 10-second time penalty due to his involvement in the incident, but it did not affect his position, as he stayed in fifth place. Meanwhile, Lando Norris had to withdraw from the race.
Norris expressed his frustration after the race, stating that their friendship could be affected if Verstappen doesn't offer an apology.
During the FIA press conference at Silverstone, Norris mentioned that he has talked about the incident with Verstappen.
"Yes, we have," Norris replied when questioned about whether he had talked to Verstappen.
Norris commented, "To be honest, I don't believe an apology was necessary. Some of the remarks I make in the pen right after the race are due to my frustration in those moments."
"A surge of adrenaline and a whirlwind of emotions took over. I ended up saying things I didn't genuinely mean, especially as the week progressed. It was a challenging experience. The incident that caused both of our races to end was quite unfortunate."
The incident didn't feel like a strong impact or a clear collision. It was one of the lightest touches possible, but it led to serious consequences for both parties involved, particularly for me. He doesn't need to say sorry.
"I’m not looking for an apology from him, nor do I believe he needs to say sorry. In my view, it was competitive racing, perhaps occasionally pushing the limits, but we’ve discussed it and we’re both ready to get back on the track."
Norris emphasized that he found the battle with Verstappen in Austria to be highly enjoyable, characterizing it as both challenging and pushing the boundaries.
"We've reviewed everything multiple times," he said. "I've picked up a lot of new information. Much of it was expected and familiar to me. Competing at the top level is different from battling further down the field, which has been our situation over the past year or so. Additionally, Max has a unique racing style compared to many others, which is part of why he's a champion. Overall, I've reflected on it, and I'm eager to get back out there this weekend and aim for improved performance."
"He has a distinctive racing style that is aggressive and pushes boundaries. This kind of intensity is what we all appreciate, and personally, I find it thrilling. I really enjoyed the entire battle we had. Naturally, it's unfortunate how it concluded. But aside from that, you can see everything clearly on television. I'm looking forward to competing again this weekend."
