Martin’s Transition to Aprilia in MotoGP: “The Challenge for Jorge Will Be…”
“Adapting to a different bike that doesn't perform at the same level will be tough.”
Aleix Espargaro recognizes that Jorge Martin will face the dual challenge of adjusting to a new machine and changing his mentality at times when he transitions from Ducati to Aprilia next year.
The present leader of the MotoGP championship is set to take Espargaro's spot on Aprilia's official team in 2025.
Though Espargaro spent eight years advancing from the back of the grid on the RS-GP, Martin has had his entire MotoGP career with Pramac Ducati, achieving a win in just his sixth grand prix.
Ducati's Desmosedici is maintaining its supremacy in this year's world championship, securing the first four spots in the rankings, clinching victory in all grand prix races except at COTA, and winning all but three Sprint events.
Aprilia is the sole additional manufacturer to secure victories, with Maverick Vinales achieving a grand prix win at COTA and Sprint wins at both Portimao and COTA, along with Espargaro's Sprint win in Catalunya.
However, although Ducati has remained undefeated in both Sprints and Grand Prix races for the last seven rounds, Aprilia faced significant difficulties in the most recent races at Aragon and Misano.
Vinales has now fallen behind KTM racers Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta to seventh place in the world championship standings. Espargaro is currently in ninth position.
Facing a challenging weekend, where every rider on the same motorcycle is having a tough time, will be uncharted territory for Martin.
Espargaro noted that the challenging part for Jorge would be the fact that Espargaro himself had started from 20th place and managed to secure a few wins, which was no easy feat and meant he had adapted to riding a subpar bike. In contrast, Jorge is currently on the best bike, winning races, and consistently being the fastest in every session.
"Switching to a different bike that isn't of the same caliber will be challenging. However, he wanted to join Aprilia. He had various alternatives but opted for Aprilia. Therefore, there are no regrets."
“It’s a challenging path, but it’s the choice he made. He must fully commit, and Aprilia has the ability to adjust the bike to suit him. He is fast enough to be the top rider for Aprilia.”
"Therefore, while it's challenging, he will find a way to succeed."
As this weekend's second round at Misano approaches, Martin's advantage over Ducati's current titleholder, Francesco Bagnaia, has dwindled to a mere seven points due to a significant pit-stop mistake during the San Marino Grand Prix.
Espargaro commented that the individual recognizes his error and will gain valuable lessons from it. According to Espargaro, this experience will ultimately strengthen him and is a crucial aspect of his development.
