The 2024 Isuzu D-Max gets a makeover with a bold new look, enhanced safety features, and an additional "Rough Terrain Mode". Additionally, a Blade variant and a fresh diesel engine are introduced in Thailand. Isuzu has revamped the D-Max for the 2025 model year, incorporating fresh styling cues, advanced technologies, numerous driver aids aimed at making it one of the safest pickup trucks, and a special mode designed for sporadic off-road excursions.

The updated design gives the D-Max a more contemporary and rugged look. The front end has been enhanced with a wider, black chrome grille and sleeker LED daytime running lights. At the rear, the eye-catching triple L-shaped LED tail lights stand out, which not only look great but also improve visibility. New fender flares and optional matte alloy wheels complete the powerful visual impact.

Enhanced Interior Comfort and Technology

Inside the cabin, Isuzu emphasizes increased comfort and enhanced functionality. The premium trim level, V-Cross, features an expanded 9-inch infotainment screen and a fresh 7-inch digital display for the driver’s dashboard. Modern updates include USB-C ports and an optional wireless charging pad positioned near the gear shift. The infotainment system is made more user-friendly with the addition of new knobs for volume and channel selection.

The new D-Max stands out particularly for its enhanced safety and support features. It boasts an upgraded 3D camera system that offers a wider angle of detection, improving the recognition of pedestrians and obstacles with the capability to initiate automatic braking if necessary. The freshly introduced intelligent adaptive cruise control (IACC) has the ability to detect speed limits in real-time and assists the driver in adjusting speed accordingly. Furthermore, the lane-keeping assistance has been refined, ensuring a smoother maintenance of the driving lane.

Enhanced Offroad Capability: Guaranteed Adventure on Unpaved Paths

Offroad aficionados will appreciate the lifted pick-up truck's "Enhanced Offroad Capability" feature, engineered precisely for challenging terrain. It optimizes traction through a focused torque distribution, particularly under severe conditions such as muddy or rocky routes.

Paired with a lockable rear axle, this feature enhances the vehicle's handling and steadiness when off-roading. The upgraded tire pressure monitoring system displays real-time pressure readings and alerts the driver when adjustments are needed – perfect for varying terrains.

Unique Model for Australia

As Europe's facelift version brags contemporary features and design enhancements, Isuzu unveils a highly exclusive version in Australia named the D-Max Blade. Visually, the Blade distinguishes itself with black accents that add a sophisticated and athletic touch.

The radiator grille, wheels, and various body details sport a black finish, accentuating the vehicle's bold appearance. Inside, Isuzu places a premium on superior fittings: fine materials and well-considered features elevate the experience to a level of luxury for the driver.

Photo Gallery: Isuzu D-Max Blade (2024)

However, the Blade isn't just visually appealing. For adventures off the beaten path, this special edition comes equipped with a specially tailored accessory package. This includes a sturdy skid plate, off-road tires designed for rough terrain, and additional elements that transform the Aussie-D-Max into a true off-road expert.

Unfortunately, this appealing option will be limited to the Australian market for the time being. A model such as the Blade, just like the new Mazda BT-50, would likely garner significant attention in Europe as well. Customized pickups with a touch of luxury are increasingly popular in this region.

Isuzu Introduces New Engine for Thai Market

Isuzu is expanding the engine options for the D-Max in Thailand by adding a new 2.2-liter diesel engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. This engine is designed for optimal efficiency and adds to the current range of engines available. The new transmission is engineered to provide smoother transitions between gears and significantly enhance comfort during extended journeys.

Isuzu MU-X gets a new diesel engine

Unfortunately, the MU-X is not available in Germany.

The MU-X SUV variant also benefits from the introduction of new powertrain technology. With its spacious interior and state-of-the-art technology, the MU-X continues to be one of Isuzu's most appealing models. The fact that it remains unavailable in Germany is likely a disappointment for many SUV enthusiasts, particularly given its durable yet family-friendly features. It is currently uncertain if and when these models will be available in Europe.

Isuzu D-Max Evaluated

The refreshed Isuzu D-Max is now available in a range of versions and trim levels at all certified dealers in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Prices differ depending on the model and features. The entry-level L starts at approximately 44,490 euros for the Space Cab 4WD, while the high-end models such as the V-Cross in the Double Cab version kick off at 58,490 euros.

Smart is set to expand its lineup with fresh offerings by 2025

The anticipated #5 is slated for release, and there's buzz about the potential comeback of the Fortwo…

Smart's vehicle range is gearing up for an addition with at least one new entry. Following the #1 and #3, the year 2025 will witness the launch of the #5. Described as an "adventurous" SUV (or Crossover, depending on preference), this model is touted for its rapid charging capability and promises considerable power. Additionally, there may be more news on the horizon about the Fortwo, as Smart is reportedly developing a successor.

Intelligent Number Five

Intelligent Number Five

The Smart #5 is set to be the brand's largest offering. This SUV measures 4.71 meters in length with a wheelbase of 2.90 meters, featuring a boxy design aesthetic. It comes equipped with various features and accessories tailored for off-road driving, including underbody protection, a roof light bar, and lateral hooks.

The interior of the Smart #5 features specially designed seats for maximum comfort, a customizable lighting system with 256 color options, and a high-end sound system. The vehicle also offers an optional electrical system capable of fast charging, which can power up the 100-kWh battery from 10% to 80% within approximately 15 minutes. It boasts a driving range of 740 kilometers according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, though the specifications for the European market have yet to be disclosed.

In various markets, the #5 is expected to be available with single motor versions producing between 340 and 363 horsepower, and dual motor versions offering 595 or 646 horsepower, complete with all-wheel drive.

Intelligent Two-Seater

Electric Intelligent Two-Seater

Yes, by 2025 we might witness a revival of Smart's original essence with the much-anticipated successor to the Fortwo. This could be an ultra-compact, fully electric vehicle that might be named #2, reflecting the brand's latest naming convention. Dirk Adelmann, the CEO of Smart Europe, hinted in an exclusive interview a few weeks back that a decision regarding the "new Fortwo" is expected to be made soon.

It seems that Smart has been developing a platform specifically designed for this model for some time now: the Electric Compact Architecture. All that remains is to anticipate additional details from the company. There could potentially be a showcase, possibly even an initial concept, revealed by the end of 2025.

Kia’s Pickup Puzzle: Gasoline or Electric for the U.S. Market?

Published

on

By

Kia is contemplating introducing a pickup truck to the American market, but it's unclear if it will run on traditional gasoline or electric power. This was revealed by senior executives from Kia's U.S. team at the recent auto show in Los Angeles.

Regardless, the mentioned pickup isn't the Tasman, which made its debut in October and is primarily aimed at markets in Australia, Africa, and the Middle East.

The Tasman, a traditional midsize pickup truck with a separate chassis and fuel-powered engine, also offers a diesel option. It features a refined interior but is designed to serve as a reliable utility vehicle.

During an interview at the event on Thursday, Steven Center, the COO and Executive VP of Kia, told Green Car Reports that the Tasman model isn't suitable for this particular market. However, he indicated that there's potential for another petrol-powered truck to be considered.

Upcoming 2025 Model of Kia EV

At the same time, the previously announced electric pickup from Kia, which is set to share some components with the EV9, is not guaranteed to make its way to the American market.

"Russell Wager, the key marketing officer at Kia America, mentioned in a different interview at the LA show that the decision to introduce the electric truck is yet to be made, noting that it's still an option under consideration."

The delay could be linked to the branding strategy of the vehicle. Back in 2022, upon global confirmation of Kia's electric pickup venture, Wager mentioned to Green Car Reports that for the model to be viable in the North American market, it would have to be marketed as a luxury electric vehicle rather than a budget-friendly option with a low cost.

Preview of Kia's Electric Vehicle

Consideration of the apparent market oversaturation of costly electric pickups might explain Kia's hesitation in this sector. The luxury electric pickup segment has expanded to feature offerings from Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Rivian, and Tesla, and will soon welcome new additions from Ram and the Scout brand by VW.

Complicating the scenario was a recent report from the South Korean outlet Pulse that emerged simultaneously with the LA auto show. It's been reported that Hyundai Motor Group and General Motors are exploring a partnership to create a cost-effective pickup truck aimed at the Latin American market, with potential expansion to other markets. Based on the memorandum of understanding, GM and Hyundai are also working together on electric vehicle and hydrogen technologies, as well as procurement strategies, although it remains uncertain how these elements may interconnect.

Kia's solution for a pickup truck destined for the American market might be found in a balance between a completely electric vehicle and a more traditional model, such as the Tasman. This could potentially include a much-talked-about item linked to the Hyundai Santa Cruz, a relative within the company. Kia is set to increase its offerings of plug-in hybrids and hybrid vehicles, expanding the selection, boosting sales, and enhancing the electric mileage. They might even consider a simple electric vehicle design complemented by a range extender. Any of these avenues could offer Kia and its consumers some of the initial cost benefits that are currently lacking in the truck segment.

VW Rules Out 2-Speed Transmissions for EVs, Cites Lack of Customer Demand

Published

on

By

Volkswagen isn't intending to venture into the domain of electric vehicles with two-speed gearboxes, unlike Porsche and Mercedes-Benz.

At the 2024 Los Angeles car expo on Thursday, Volkswagen's chief of worldwide research and development, Kai Grünitz, expressed to Green Car Reports that the car manufacturer does not consider dual-speed transmissions necessary for electric vehicles.

Grünitz mentioned that currently, there aren't any intentions to manufacture it, clarifying that this is due to a lack of interest from consumers for multi-speed transmissions in electric vehicles.

Grünitz subsequently remarked that investing in something is unjustified if customers show no interest in it.

"Frankly speaking, if you consider the ID.7, it stands out as one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles," stated Stefan Voswinkel, who leads the product communications department at Volkswagen.

Grünitz claimed that their product is top-notch within its category, specifically mentioning the VW ID.7. This vehicle's release in the U.S. has been postponed without a set date. It operates on a single-speed reduction gear system, similar to other electric vehicles that are built on VW's MEB platform for electric cars.

Grünitz pointed out that besides multi-speed transmissions, there are alternative methods to either decrease or enhance efficiencies, emphasizing that the engine side holds the greatest significance in this regard.

Grünitz noted that numerous minor adjustments can enhance performance without needing to modify the transmission.

Upcoming 2024 Model of the Volkswagen Golf

Despite acknowledging that Volkswagen has developed a manual transmission for electric vehicles and that he has personally tried it out, Grünitz revealed he was not impressed by it. He explained that for performance-focused cars such as an electric GTI, he prefers the seamless driving experience that is characteristic of a single-speed transmission in EVs.

The soon-to-be-released 2026 model of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class marks the debut of the brand's latest MMA platform and will feature a dual-speed gearbox. Leaders at Mercedes have emphasized that efficiency is now paramount. Grünitz expressed optimism, saying, "We hope it will emerge as a new standard, although it hasn't reached that point just yet."

Grünitz pointed out the lack of conversation surrounding efficiency. Even though companies like Lucid are quite outspoken on the matter, Grünitz observed that it's not a topic on the minds of consumers, questioning why such discussions aren't occurring among their clientele.

In conclusion, Grünitz pointed out that increasing the efficiency of vehicles would also raise their cost.

Porsche's transition to fully electric vehicles will take longer than initially expected.

The possibility of the electric truck by Kia, which is connected to the EV9 SUV, being available in the United States is still uncertain, potentially due to its anticipated cost.

Kia’s Electric Expansion: EV3 and EV4 Target U.S. Market, PV5 Van Teased as Overlander Concept

Published

on

By

There's a possibility that the United States may see both Kia EV3 and EV4 electric vehicles, with the PV5 van also being a potential addition. For Kia's small electric vehicle offerings in the U.S., it might not be a case of choosing one over the other.

This could indicate that American consumers interested in electric vehicles may finally have access to the exciting compact EV segment that has been mostly absent in the U.S., potentially through the introduction of Kia's EV3 and EV4 models.

During their Kia EV Day celebration in October 2023, the company unveiled the new EV3 compact electric crossover, with dimensions akin to the Volvo EX30, and the slightly larger, sleeker EV4 compact electric hatchback. Concurrently, they also presented the production model of the EV5 electric crossover, comparable in size to vehicles such as the Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4.

Kia promptly stated that the EV5 would not be heading to the United States, yet they did not rule out the possibility of the EV3 and EV4 making their way there.

Concept design for the Kia EV4

The EV4, which is in production, is anticipated to make its worldwide debut in the upcoming months. Meanwhile, Kia unveiled the EV3, which is ready for production, at last year's event, and it has begun shipping in Europe since the start of this month. However, there has been no official announcement regarding the availability of the EV3 or the EV4 in the United States market.

During the recent auto exhibition in Los Angeles, Green Car Reports inquired with Kia America's COO and EVP Steven Center about which of the two electric vehicles might be expected to debut.

"Both could be possible," Center responded. "In my view, it boils down to how we handle the different segments."

Center explained that the EV4 and EV3 are distinct types of electric vehicles. He described the EV4 as the electric version of the K5 sedan, while he likened the EV3 to a kind of Soul EV.

The 2023 model of the Kia Niro

Center didn't confirm if the Kia Niro EV is on borrowed time, given that it was chosen for the U.S. market over the existing Soul EV. However, he suggested that the Niro EV is based on a platform originally designed for internal combustion engines. It's also a second-generation model that was developed before Kia had its E-GMP EV platform.

The Center mentioned that Kia is expected to soon introduce two distinct vehicle ranges – one consisting of internal combustion engines with hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, and another that will be exclusively electric vehicles.

In the coming year, the range of electric vehicle models offered by Kia in the United States is set to expand, assures Center. This could potentially include the likes of EV3, EV4, PV5, or an entirely different model. Additionally, the powerful Kia EV9 GT, which made an appearance at the recent auto show, could be a part of this lineup. Clearly, Kia's commitment to electric vehicles will not diminish by 2025.

Concept design for Kia's PV5 WKNDR vehicle.

Kia's PV5 WKNDR design concept

Concept design for the Kia PV5 weekend vehicle

Kia hinted at an unexpected venture during the LA exhibition, which we perceive as an unpredictable move. The brand has previously indicated that its forthcoming PV5 electric van would be chiefly aimed at business applications and prospective autonomous taxi services. However, the unveiling of the PV5 WKNDR, an electric camper van prototype, at the recent SEMA event in Las Vegas, coupled with its significant presence at the LA automotive expo, raises a different possibility.

Is the company preparing to introduce their electric vans to the American market as small, leisure-oriented options comparable to the Volkswagen ID.Buzz, or maybe they're aiming to align more closely with the fundamental spirit that made the beloved Honda Element a cult classic?

At the LA auto show, Russell Wager, who oversees marketing for Kia America, told GCR that the PV5 is currently only set to launch in Korea and Europe. He explained that the SEMA concept's aim was to gauge the response of American consumers to a design that leans towards the overlanding style.

"Wager mentioned that they are currently assessing the possible implications for the U.S. market."

Porsche's transition to fully electric vehicles will not happen as swiftly as initially anticipated.

Volkswagen perceives minimal returns from integrating transmissions with multiple gears into electric vehicles, as well as from other methods to enhance performance.

The possibility of the Kia electric pickup, connected to the EV9 SUV, making it to the American market remains uncertain, probably due to anticipated cost concerns.

Kia is prepared to adapt its offerings to prioritize electric vehicles, hybrids, or plug-in hybrids, with plans to enhance future plug-in hybrid models to achieve significantly greater electric-only driving distance.

Once fully completed, with both stages operational, the proposed electric-vehicle factory is expected to have the capacity to manufacture as many as 400,000 vehicles annually.

The leading figure at Rivian expresses that Tesla has performed outstandingly, noting personal experience with both the Model 3 and Model Y.

Volkswagen leadership acknowledges the gap in their range for hybrid vehicles, and their dealerships are eagerly requesting them.

Krise bei KTM: Vom Branchenprimus zur Insolvenz – und die Suche nach dem Weg zurück

Published

KTM is facing bankruptcy! The X-Bow is also impacted

However, there's still a glimmer of hope…

The wave of troubling updates isn't limited to Germany (with the Volkswagen scandal and layoffs at Ford). Now, a once shining example among our immediate neighbors has been hit hard: The Austrian motorcycle and automobile manufacturer KTM has been forced to file for bankruptcy and is struggling to stay afloat.

Smoke has been spotted at KTM's location.

The iconic Austrian company, KTM Group, is facing its most significant challenge to date. The esteemed motorcycle manufacturer is forced to file for bankruptcy and is fighting for its financial survival. The crisis stems from a complex set of issues: Sales have plummeted, especially in their main markets in Europe and the USA. What was once a healthy profit of 127 million euros has turned into a staggering loss of 181 million euros, a downfall that has caught even the most seasoned industry experts off guard.

Corporate leader Stefan Pierer is now implementing a strategic master plan: Instead of heading towards a conventional bankruptcy, he's utilizing a novel EU restructuring process. The aim is high-reaching – to salvage three loans totaling 250 million euros and steer the company back towards a path of success.

What does this actually mean? KTM has no plans to surrender. The firm is adamant about meeting all its obligations while simultaneously undertaking a significant overhaul of its internal operations. There's a sort of grace period in place until the end of February, during which any forced collections are on hold. For now, motorcycle enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief as production continues, and service centers and dealerships operate as usual. However, the pressure is on – KTM has until Christmas to unveil its strategy for recovery.

Stefan Pierer

Stefan Pierer, who notably holds a position on the Supervisory Board of Mercedes-Benz, is facing a critical challenge. He is tasked with not only injecting more funds but also renegotiating intricate corporate structures. The intricate ties with the Indian firm Bajaj and the destiny of Pierer Mobility are at risk.

KTM has faced bankruptcy before. Pierer acquired the company in 1992 when it was already insolvent and subsequently transformed it into Europe's leading motorcycle manufacturer. Last year, the firm employed over 6,000 workers who produced nearly 400,000 bikes and vehicles.

2023 KTM 1290 Super Duke RR Model

2023 Model of the KTM X-Bow GT-XR

The challenges now facing KTM are immense: a dip in production, altered sales tactics, and a shifting landscape in transportation are necessitating a strategic pivot. Electric mobility, which was once scoffed at, might now emerge as a lifeline. Specialists are keeping a close watch. Can KTM navigate the balance between honoring its heritage and embracing innovative change? Will the company maintain its market standing or is a complete overhaul inevitable?

Increased problematic incidents:

The holiday season turns into a pivotal period for KTM. A strategic blueprint is required that will persuade investors, inspire the workforce, and maintain the enthusiasm of motorcycle enthusiasts. This is about more than just a business – it's about preserving an emblem of the motorcycle industry. The ultimate goal of this rescue operation is one thing: ensuring KTM's survival.

Volkswagen’s Design Revolution: Zurück zu Knöpfen und Verbesserter Qualität für den ID.3 und ID.4

Published

on

By

To enhance your experience with a more personal touch

Volkswagen is set to introduce design changes and additional buttons

Furthermore, the company aims to enhance the interior quality, beginning with the upcoming ID.3 and ID.4 models

It is no secret that Volkswagen is currently facing one of the most severe crises in its history. The situation involves factory shutdowns, large-scale layoffs, and on top of that, the company is once again grappling with powerful union representatives who seem to be oblivious to the seriousness of the situation.

The long period during which the Golf reigned supreme atop the European sales charts now seems like a distant memory. Additionally, the electric car market is experiencing a slowdown. This can be attributed to several factors, but one that may be overlooked is the – let's put this diplomatically – less than impressive design of the purely battery-powered vehicles.

In my previous review of the quite impressive ID.7 Tourer, I mentioned that Volkswagen urgently needs to revamp its design approach. Additionally, the austere and somewhat unwelcoming interiors of the ID. models aren't doing any favors, especially considering the price point of these vehicles nowadays.

Improvement seems to be on the horizon, at least according to Volkswagen. In a discussion with the English team from Auto Express, VW's Head of Development Kai Grünitz assured that substantial changes are on the table. The successors to the ID.3 and ID.4 are expected to showcase "an entirely new design language." This is a welcome update, considering the bulky and uninspired design of the present models will likely not be missed by anyone.

Grünitz also stated that by updating the visual identity, they aim to regain their classic image. "Returning to our original design roots and embracing what Volkswagen is traditionally recognized for."

Looking inside a Volkswagen vehicle hasn't been a particularly joyful experience for customers lately, whether it’s due to aesthetics, functionality, or glitches in the software. The company is planning to upgrade the user interface by reintroducing a more conventional control system that incorporates additional buttons and switches. This means future VW models are likely to feature dedicated buttons for commonly used tasks, eliminating the hassle of navigating through submenus on a touchscreen.

In addition to bringing back traditional controls, as clearly demonstrated in the successful concept of the ID.2all, efforts are being made to enhance the perception of quality within the vehicle interiors. This has been an area of significant deficiency recently, particularly when contrasted with the peak periods during Ferdinand Piëch's tenure.

Driver's area of the Volkswagen ID.4

This isn't the first time we've heard promises about improved interiors. At the end of 2022, group CEO Oliver Blume talked about a "quality campaign." These changes don't happen overnight, but there's a sense that the decision-makers in Wolfsburg are catching on. The interior of the ID.7 remains simple but has made a significant leap in material quality and workmanship. One can only hope that this trend continues.

Addressing the ID.3 and ID.4 models specifically, Kai Grünitz mentioned that there will be "numerous advancements regarding battery expenses and efficiency." The upcoming versions will represent a "tremendous upgrade" that will benefit both the manufacturer (by reducing manufacturing costs) and the consumers, who will get superior vehicles. The latest electric cars are anticipated to arrive in 2026.

However, it remains uncertain if the ID.3 will retain its name. Volkswagen has previously declared that the Golf's ninth generation will be entirely electric. Earlier this year, Grünitz suggested that the E-Golf might spell trouble for the ID.3, stating, "There isn’t enough room for two or three models targeting the same customer base. We've started working on a fully electric Golf."

Rivian’s Chief Takes Aim at EV Market: No Need for Another Tesla Clone

Published

on

By

Rivian's chief executive, RJ Scaringe, expressed the view that the globe does not require a duplicate of Tesla.

"Tesla has performed incredibly well," Scaringe remarked in a discussion last Wednesday with Green Car Reports and various other press representatives. "Their brand is strong, and they offer excellent products."

The leading figure at Rivian mentioned owning a Model 3 and Y, indicating that it appears all rivals are in pursuit of these models.

The soon-to-be-released Rivian R2 is targeting the same audience as the Tesla Model Y, but it will present itself with a design more akin to a classic SUV. This new vehicle is expected to hit the market in 2026 and will be powered by LG batteries produced in Arizona.

Scaringe mentioned that when it comes to the electric vehicle market priced below $50,000, there are "fewer than five truly attractive options." He noted that electric vehicles make up less than 10% of the overall market, yet among those, the Model Y stands out as a benchmark option.

Manufacturers are worried about Tesla's potential to dominate 65% of the electric vehicle market indefinitely. The company's extensive size allows them to manage their supply chain with strong assertiveness, according to Scaringe, which poses challenges for suppliers.

The CEO faced questions regarding the forthcoming electric vehicles from Scout, a brand under the Volkswagen umbrella, following the company's substantial investment of $5.8 billion in Rivian through a collaborative partnership.

Scaringe expressed his delight at the level of enthusiasm surrounding Scout, and subsequently remarked, "It's wonderful to witness an alternative option emerging."

Rivian Secures $6.6 Billion Federal Loan for Georgia Electric Vehicle Plant, Targets 2028 Opening

Published

Rivian receives a provisional loan of $6.6 billion for the construction of an electric vehicle facility in Georgia, slated for completion by

On Monday, Rivian disclosed that it has received a provisional promise from the U.S. government for a loan that could be as much as $6.6 billion. This funding is part of the DOE's ATVM initiative, aimed at supporting the manufacturing of cutting-edge technology vehicles.

Should the loan agreement be concluded, it would provide financial support for the development of Rivian's new manufacturing facility at Stanton Springs North, located in proximity to Social Circle, Georgia, and within an hour's drive from the heart of Atlanta, according to a statement from the car manufacturer. The Georgia-based factory was first made public in 2021, aiming to commence operations in 2024. However, due to a halt in construction, the launch date has been delayed initially to 2027 and now further to 2028.

Rivian has announced a new

Rivian has announced its intention to construct the facility in two stages, with each stage capable of producing 200,000 vehicles per year, culminating in an overall output of 400,000 vehicles each year once finished. The initial stage is expected to be finalized by 2028, and Rivian anticipates generating around 7,500 "operations jobs" within Georgia by the year 2030. This is on top of the 2,000 construction roles required for the plant's construction.

According to the same announcement, the Department of Energy loan would serve as a major financial boost for the manufacturing of the company's mid-sized base, which is the foundation for the R2 electric SUV as well as the R3 and R3X hatchbacks. Rivian had previously decided to commence the production of the R2 in 2026 at its existing plant in Illinois, with plans to produce the R3 series at a later date. Meanwhile, the company has put its Georgia facility on hold.

Model R3 from Rivian

For the loan to be secured, Rivian is required to meet various conditions related to technology, law, environmental standards, and finances, as reported by Reuters. This entails an agreement to remain neutral in matters of union formation, although this does not ensure that a union will be established at the facility, based on information from a source with knowledge of the situation who wished to remain unnamed.

Launched in 2007 and financed in 2008, the ATVM loan initiative has supported numerous important ventures. A noteworthy example includes a loan to Tesla, which facilitated the commencement of Model S production. Moreover, Nissan took advantage of an ATVM loan to kickstart the manufacturing of the Leaf on American soil. While these loans can extend to a variety of eco-friendly technology ventures beyond electric vehicles, there's been a significant decline in their distribution, and they face the possibility of being halted entirely under the impending Trump administration.

Kia Accelerates Electrification: PHEVs to Hit 60 Miles Electric Range in Near Future

Published

on

By

Kia is set to increase its plug-in hybrid offerings, with plans to achieve a 60-mile electric range within the next few years. As they focus on boosting EV production in the US, they're simultaneously looking to enhance their hybrid and plug-in hybrid sales and capabilities.

Steven Center, who serves as the COO and Executive VP for Kia America, states that the benchmark for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles is a range of 60 miles or more.

During a conversation with Green Car Reports at the Los Angeles auto show last week, the representative from Center revealed that Kia's production models could feature this figure in just "a couple of years." This advancement is likely due to ongoing battery enhancements and the design of future car platforms that accommodate larger PHEV battery packs.

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) boasting a 60-mile range on electricity alone would mark a significant improvement over current statistics. At the car exhibition, Kia unveiled updated versions of its 2026 Sportage hybrid and its PHEV counterpart. At present, the plug-in Sportage has an EPA rating of 34 miles on electric power, followed by a combined 35 mpg once that runs out. These figures are for the 2024 edition; there's a slight increase in performance for the 2025 model. However, it remains to be seen if these enhancements and the latest modifications will impact the efficiency metrics.

2025 Model of the Kia Sportage

Center didn't specify which models would be equipped with the extended-range plug-in hybrid technology initially. However, he mentioned that the 60-mile range is based on a technical calculation that represents the average daily driving distance for Americans, which is sufficient for everyday electric vehicle use and additional mileage for longer journeys.

This is similar to California's goal of achieving a 70-mile electric range, which is a benchmark for automakers to gain additional credits in future fleet regulations.

California does require electric vehicles, but it's providing car manufacturers with more leeway as we move towards that goal, beginning with the 2026 models. If they produce plug-in hybrids that can go farther on electric power, they'll benefit. Specifically, plug-in hybrid vehicles with an electric range of 70 miles or more will be treated the same as a fully electric vehicle in terms of fleet credits. Meanwhile, those with an electric range of 43 to 69 miles will receive a proportionate amount of the credits assigned to a full EV.

Achieving the journey to 70 miles of electric range presents a significant technical hurdle at the moment. A senior Nissan official responsible for product strategy in North America mentioned to Green Car Reports that the current 30- to 40-kWh batteries required for this range are excessively bulky and hefty, making them impractical. However, advancements in battery technology are expected to reduce their physical dimensions and mass, making them more convenient to incorporate.

2023 Model of the Kia Niro with Plug-In Hybrid Features

Center emphasized the advancements in battery technology once more. While Kia is still working on enhancing traditional gas engines, its focus is primarily on integrating them into hybrid configurations. Center mentioned that they are exploring the possibility of incorporating extended-range electric vehicle technology, though it has not been officially slated for inclusion in any upcoming models of the brand. This approach could potentially lead to the development of a novel engine design, especially in a series-hybrid system where the engine operates as a high-efficiency power generator.

In the realm of pickup trucks, Ram is fine-tuning its approach with the anticipated launch of the 1500 Ramcharger truck next year. The company asserts this vehicle will achieve approximately 145 miles on electric power alone, thanks to a 92-kWh battery. It also features the tried-and-true Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 engine, which has been a staple in entry-level models for some time. In the Ramcharger, however, the engine will serve exclusively as a generator. This setup is expected to provide a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds and a combined electric and gas range of 690 miles after starting with a full charge and gas tank.

Some car manufacturers remain skeptical about plug-in hybrids, considering them an ambiguous category, as evidenced by that Ram truck. However, Kia is doubling down on its commitment to focus on these vehicles in the coming years.

2025 Model of Kia Sportage with Hybrid Technology

The company intends to increase their number, as per the Center for PHEVs, which refers to them as "the entry point to electric vehicle adoption."

Kia has made its plug-in hybrid vehicles available for purchase across the entire United States, and has made a concerted effort to ensure its dealers are well-versed in both electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. According to Russell Wager, the marketing director for Kia Motors America, who spoke to Green Car Reports, conveying the concept to dealers that plug-in hybrids can operate for 30 to 35 miles purely on electric power before utilizing the gas engine is challenging, but the company has already made significant progress in this area.

Kia has not specified any specific figures or quotas for the production of its hybrid models, according to Wager. He explained, “There's no set objective for us because it's ultimately up to the consumer to decide.”

Upcoming 2024 model of Kia N

Wager elaborated on the options available, emphasizing that they're prepared to increase hybrid production based on consumer demand. He highlighted the adaptability of the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant in Georgia, which will supply certain future Kia models, as well as Kia's facility in West Point, Georgia, which will be the primary production site for the Sportage. Additionally, he mentioned that Korea could provide extra hybrids if necessary.

Center mentioned that efforts are underway to enhance the supply chain to meet the growing demand for hybrid vehicles. He noted that consumers are showing interest, dealerships are eager to sell them, and these vehicles are more eco-friendly.

Consequently, with regulatory changes on the horizon for the automotive sector, whether in January or later in the year, Kia appears to be in a strong position thanks to its adaptive approach.

Volvo’s Hybrid Haven: The 2025.5 XC90 PHEV Bridges the Gap to an Electric Future

Published

on

By

Article Summary: The 2025.5 model of the Volvo XC90 PHEV bridges the gap between traditional gasoline engines and electric vehicles.

The philosopher Søren Kierkegaard once said we must experience life moving forward. Yet, not all buyers of the latest SUVs are prepared for the upcoming fully electric vehicle generation.

Volvo is prepared for when the time comes. The compact Volvo EX30 hatchback will shortly be making its way to dealer floors, while the luxurious Volvo EX90, an electric SUV with three rows of seating, presents a compelling argument for moving on from gasoline vehicles.

Volvo has adjusted its initial aim to go fully electric by 2030. Instead of pursuing the remaining combustion engine market, the company will focus on enhancing its plug-in hybrid models and rely on them more than previously expected.

By 2025, in line with the shift towards electric vehicles, Volvo plans to revamp its top-performing hybrid and one of its most popular models to date. The mid-year release, the 2025.5 Volvo XC90, will feature enhanced noise reduction, upgraded interior finishes, a fresh touchscreen equipped with the latest user interface taken from the EX90, and an overhauled suspension system, all complementing its redesigned front and back.

The XC90 hasn't undergone a drastic overhaul. It retains a sense of the known, avoiding any sense of being outdated. This is essential, particularly as the plug-in hybrid, which debuted with its series ten years ago, is set to become a more prominent fixture in Volvo's portfolio for the years to come.

Unfortunately

Test driving the 2025.5 model of the Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle in Copenhagen.

The Volvo XC90: Elegantly Understated and Visually Impressive

The newest version of the XC90 sees modest yet significant updates to both its exterior and interior. The most noticeable alteration is the redesigned front, featuring a grille with horizontal slats reminiscent of its iconic diagonal-bar design, alongside a prominent emblem. This is enclosed by a shiny border and flanked by sleek, hammer-shaped LED matrix headlamps. The car's designers have also reworked the shape of the hood and front wheel arches to complement the new lights, introduced fresh wheel patterns, given the tail lights a smoky finish, and introduced a rich, new shade of red to highlight these refinements.

What remains unchanged: The robust yet graceful estate design of the XC90, and the significant impact it conveys.

The modifications within the XC90 are more noticeable. Now, dominating the dashboard is an expanded 11.2-inch touchscreen, replacing the former 9.0-inch display. Flanking this are tall air vents, and the dashboard itself has been refreshed with panels adorned in upcycled fabric. These panels are designed to match the precision-cut aluminum speaker covers and the wooden accents.

Updated lighting adds a touch of theatrical flair to the design elements; options include a white wood theme with a classic Hollywood Regency feel, a muted charcoal-gray combination, and the standout pairing of nut-brown ash with a cardamom-brown material, exuding an autumnal, pumpkin spice essence that perfectly resonates with the XC90's intended suburban family demographic.

I

Review of the test drive for the 2025.5 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, conducted in

It's a foggy November dawn near Copenhagen when I activate the ignition of the XC90 plug-in hybrid and embark on a route charted by Google Maps. I'm crossing the combined Øresund bridge and tunnel, heading into the southern part of Sweden. My goal is to discover whether the latest version of the XC90 offers any unexpected features, particularly for someone with my driving habits, which consist mainly of brief local trips interspersed with the occasional lengthy journey, perhaps once a month or even less frequently.

For those who prefer a traditional setup without the need for a plug-in, the mid-2025 model of the XC90 still provides an option of a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that delivers 247 horsepower, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a default all-wheel-drive system. An enhanced version of this engine offers both turbo and supercharge capabilities, producing a more robust 310 horsepower. Both versions incorporate mild-hybrid technology for increased fuel efficiency. Initially, I took the standard version for a spin, decked out in the Ultra trim that boasted a chic white wood finish and an impressive denim-blue woven fabric interior. I effortlessly covered distance across the Swedish countryside in this model, which performed flawlessly despite being equipped with sizable 21-inch wheels and lacking the optional air suspension system.

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a better match for my regular driving needs, particularly because I can access free charging at a slow pace just a short five-minute stroll away. It's clear why Volvo refers to the XC90 T8 as their "plan B." In addition to the supercharged turbocharged 4-cylinder engine found in other models, the T8 includes a 18.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, of which 14.7 kWh is effectively usable. This battery is identical to those used across many of Volvo's newly updated plug-in hybrids. Combined with the engine, the extra 145 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of torque give the vehicle a combined output of 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque, enabling this hefty SUV, which weighs close to 5,000 pounds, to accelerate to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds. It also has a commendable range of 33 miles on electric power alone, according to EPA estimates.

I can drive for half a week on electricity alone, and currently, it's taking me through the southern regions of Sweden, a delight for anyone with an interest in linguistics due to the unique accents found there. While the engine remains the same, the upgraded cabin now features heavy-duty soundproofing glass and materials that minimize the noise from outside. This creates the perfect environment to appreciate the top tracks from the Bowers & Wilkins sound system, alongside the tunes of Fleetwood Mac.

The XC90 PHEV's integrated 6.4-kw charger allows it to fully charge its battery in roughly five hours when using a Level 2 charging station. Additionally, it has the capability to save battery life for future use by switching between different driving modes. Currently, there is no information about the introduction of a Tesla-based NACS charging port, which would significantly increase the number of charging facilities in my area. For myself and numerous other motorists, the XC90 PHEV serves effectively as a solely electric vehicle.

I

Review of the test drive for the 2025.5 model of the Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

The 2025.5 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle delivers a smooth driving experience. In situations where electric power alone isn't sufficient, the vehicle provides an array of driving options including Pure Electric, Hybrid, Power, Off-Road, and Permanent All-Wheel Drive. As the battery nears depletion, the engine hums to life almost imperceptibly, and I select the Hybrid setting to maintain a consistent pace.

Despite having a robust 455 horsepower, the XC90 doesn't push boundaries. It's discernibly fast, but due to its significant heft and a finely-tuned 8-speed automatic transmission, the power surge is steady and gradual, with the electric battery compensating for any potential turbo lag-induced torque dips. The strength is there, but it's not overpowering, and the power shifts are noticeably smoother. Engaging the "B" drive mode increases regenerative braking, yet it doesn't allow for abandoning the brake pedal altogether for everyday driving, unlike the one-pedal operation you might find in a fully electric vehicle.

When it comes to the driving experience, opting for the XC90's air-suspension option pays off immediately and significantly. The standard vehicle features a multi-link front and integral-link-and-leaf rear suspension, which sometimes struggled on the rough road surfaces I encountered. However, the air suspension smoothed out these issues entirely, performing admirably even with winter tires, which were mounted in preparation for harsher weather. This SUV boasts a ground clearance between 8.1 and 8.5 inches and possesses a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds. However, in this region of the Baltics, challenging terrain is typically limited to muddy tracks on country farms.

The XC90 is ideally suited for highway driving. Its gentle steering, which provides minimal response, combined with its ability to effortlessly absorb bumps and irregularities in the road, equips the XC90 with a distinct advantage—superior ride comfort and stability on twisty routes. Its well-tuned suspension system outperforms even the more intricate systems found in large SUVs from Mercedes and BMW, with their active anti-roll damping technology appearing unnecessarily complex by comparison.

2025.5 Model Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle road test assessment, conducted in Copenhagen.

Review of the test drive for the 2025.5 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle in Copenhagen.

The 2025.5 model of the Volvo XC90 opts for Google integration while maintaining compatibility with Apple CarPlay. Despite any updates, the interior dimensions of the XC90 remain unchanged, retaining its 195.0-inch length and 117.5-inch wheelbase. The vehicle continues to offer seating arrangements for either seven occupants with a second-row bench or a six-seat layout featuring individual captain's chairs in place of the bench.

Volvo illuminates the interior with a wide glass roof, ensuring that travelers are at ease for extended trips with its top-tier seating. The driver and passenger seats come equipped with deep cushioning, optional ventilation and massage features, and even at the standard level, the firmness of the cushions is nearly flawless. The brand's Nordico man-made leather features a quilted design for aesthetics, yet the reclaimed fabric in the standard model I tested had an even more appealing look—reminiscent of the denim from an aged, well-loved pair of jeans discovered on Japanese eBay.

The individuals sitting in the front will notice a redesigned center console equipped with a wireless charging pad for phones at the front, along with a pair of concealable cupholders beneath a sliding cover. Those seated in the second-row captain's chairs are provided with cupholders, seat warming features, and a pathway leading to the third-row seating—although, if they're of medium build or larger, they might want to reconsider reaching the backmost area.

The space is slightly inadequate for tall individuals to be comfortable in both the second and third rows simultaneously, with the leg space measuring 36.6 inches and 31.9 inches respectively. Every XC90 model comes with three rows of seating, however, the last two rows can be collapsed to increase the storage area from a mere 9.3 cubic feet when filled to the window level behind the third row, to a substantial 70.8 cubic feet behind the driver's and passenger's seat, akin to a Swedish family moving westward, carrying all their belongings.

From the helm of a Volvo, the car's robust safety mechanisms have been enhanced to include vocal alerts when exceeding speed limits, which the driver can easily deactivate with a simple touch on the left side of the steering wheel. Additionally, the vehicle comes equipped with visual parking assistance for aligning in parallel spaces and maintains its standard feature of adaptive cruise control paired with the Drive Pilot feature for hands-free navigation. The infotainment system has undergone a revamp, replacing the old Sensus OS and its heat-sensitive screen with a more traditional touch-responsive display that integrates Google's services and is specifically tailored for the new EX90 electric vehicle model. While it's powered by Google's platform, the system still supports Apple CarPlay and is capable of receiving updates wirelessly.

The starting price for the refreshed XC90 is set at $59,745, which includes a range of standard features such as a mild-hybrid turbocharged four-cylinder engine, all-wheel-drive, seven-person seating capacity, a panoramic sunroof, an automatic rear hatch, 20-inch rims, both front and back parking assist systems, quilt-patterned Nordico man-made leather seats, heated seats in the front, a dashboard with stitching details, an Orrefors crystal gear selector, adjustable front seats, a 220-watt sound system, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot information system, active steering assistance, and persistent speed limit notifications. Opting for a six-seater configuration will cost an additional $500 for any variant.

The XC90 Plus, priced at $63,485, includes amenities such as a booster seat in the second row, a 360-degree camera setup, 21-inch rims, assisted parking for parallel spots, soundproof glass, and warming features for the back seats. At a higher price point of $68,245, the XC90 Ultra offers additional luxuries including ventilated front seats upholstered in nappa leather, adjustable lumbar support for the front seats, a Harman Kardon sound system, adjustable power side supports and extended cushions for the front seats, along with a display projected onto the windshield.

Choices are limited to: front seats with massage function, 22-inch rims, the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, the pneumatic suspension, and the stylish navy herringbone-patterned seat covers.

Enhancements to the turbo-4 with supercharger result in a starting cost of $64,645 for the Core model, $67,445 for the Plus variant, and $71,845 for the Ultra edition. As for the T8 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, the Core is priced at $74,295, the Plus at $77,095, and the Ultra carries a price tag of $81,495.

The 2025.5 version of the XC90, sharing some features with the 2025 model, will make its debut in dealer galleries at the beginning of 2025. Undoubtedly, it serves as a contingency for the upcoming electric vehicle era. However, for numerous motorists, this alternative option surpasses nearly all others.

The Audi Q5 Sportback's Second Generation Set to Launch in 2025

The sleeker Q5 design is primarily targeted at the European audience

It's become a common practice among car giants like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes to introduce a sportier variant of their standard SUVs, characterized by a lower roofline. This strategy appears to be paying off. Following the launch of the standard Q5 SUV, Audi is now rolling out the Q5 Sportback.

Audi claims that their latest Q5 Sportback is primarily aimed at European customers, in contrast to the preference for the Q5 SUV in North America. To put it in marketing terms, "This variant, with its forward-looking and energetic profile, targets customers who have a keen eye for design but still desire the benefits of an SUV."

Let's focus on the specifics: The dimensions in length, width, and wheelbase remain the same as the Q5 SUV, with the only difference being a slight reduction in height for the Sportback. The second iteration of the Q5 Sportback has a cargo capacity of up to 515 liters, while the SQ5 Sportback can hold up to 470 liters. With the seats folded down, the storage space increases to a maximum of 1,415 liters for the Q5 Sportback and 1,388 liters for the SQ5 Sportback. The Q5 Sportback also boasts a towing capacity of up to 2,400 kilograms. The design of the new Audi Q5 Sportback has seen significant tightening compared to its predecessor. The prominent Singleframe grille is positioned high and is accompanied by vertical, functional Air Curtains. Below the Singleframe, there's a substantial air intake housing the sensors.

The horizontal shoulder line, which serves as a connecting feature between the front and rear lights, experiences a subtle lift above the tail lights on the Sportback model to visually integrate the arch of the roof with the flat rear window.

The rear of the Q5 Sportback is designed to extend visually to the back, achieving a sloping roofline starting from the B-pillar. An optional roof rail enhances the roof's dynamic contours with added functionality. The diffuser is seamlessly incorporated into the elevated bumpers. Below the diffuser are the (real) exhaust pipes, with the S-model sporting dual round tailpipes in a fresh, more defined style.

The Q5 Sportback is available in advanced and S line trim levels. Moreover, the SQ5 Sportback features a unique exterior design. The advanced trim's exterior includes dynamic design elements that add stylish accents compared to the standard configuration.

The radiator grille and the inserts of the front air intakes are finished in "Scandium Grey", while the contrasting paint is called "Tambora Grey". The diffuser features a matt black textured finish, and the inserts at the rear are completed in "Selenite Silver". Adding to the design are 18-inch light-alloy wheels in a five-spoke pattern.

The exterior S line and the S model feature enlarged front air intakes and a more aggressively styled rear diffuser. Additionally, the Singleframe is encased in a matte anthracite chrome-look frame (Exterior S line) and matte silver chrome-look (S model), while large side Aero-Tubes in an L-Wing shape emphasize the vehicle's sporty character.

In the S-Model, the Singleframe grille is further accentuated with the addition of vertical L-Wing decorations in a matte silver chrome finish. The window trims come standard in an aluminum look. At the rear, the second-generation digital OLED tail lights and the new projection light in the spoiler above the rear window enhance safety. This projection casts a graphic onto the upper part of the rear window, effectively enlarging the area of the brake light.

Interior

Inside, the new Q5 Sportback offers a familiar experience with no real surprises: the expansive Audi MMI touchscreen and the additional passenger screen are carryovers from the Q5 SUV. The design feature known as "Softwrap" extends from the doors, across the entire dashboard, and down to the center console. The materials used in these areas, such as the Cascade upholstery fabric or the Dinamica microfiber, are largely made from recycled polyester. Whether these materials feel premium or cheap will need to be determined through further evaluation. The same goes for assessing the headroom in the back seats.

Engines

The latest Audi Q5 Sportback, similar to its sibling and the new A5, is constructed on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), a structural design tailored for traditionally powered vehicles that feature longitudinally mounted internal combustion engines. From its launch, it will be equipped with the highly efficient MHEV plus technology.

The latest MHEV plus system, equipped with a 48-volt electrical system, aids the combustion engine, and allows for limited fully electric maneuvering and parking. The newly developed drive train generator (TSG) produces additional torque up to 230 newton-meters and power up to 18 kW (24 HP). Furthermore, the 48-volt system facilitates the use of an electrically powered air conditioning compressor.

This provides the significant benefit of maintaining the air conditioning system fully operational even when the engine is turned off, such as when sailing or waiting at a red light. The lithium-ion battery in vehicles equipped with MHEV plus utilizes lithium iron phosphate chemistry and possesses a storage capacity of 1.7 kWh. The belt-driven starter generator (BSG) plays the crucial roles of initiating the engine and supplying electrical power to the battery.

The RSG system enhances the use of electric power in vehicles, reduces the load on the internal combustion engine, and contributes to lower fuel consumption. During deceleration, the RSG can recapture energy at a rate of up to 25 kW and store it in the battery through a process called recuperation. The advanced Premium Platform Combustion technology facilitates a gradual shift towards electrification via mild hybrid systems. Additionally, as the new Audi Q5 Sportback progresses through its lifecycle, it will introduce plug-in hybrid models equipped with larger batteries and the capability for external charging.

In Europe, the launch of the Audi Q5 Sportback will see three initial engine options, with more to be introduced later on. Each of these options will come equipped with the MHEV plus technology at launch, which offers a temporary boost of up to 18 kW (24 horsepower). Additionally, all models will feature the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. The base engine is a 2.0 TFSI producing 150 kW (204 horsepower) and 340 Newton-meters of peak torque, paired with front-wheel drive. There's also an option to upgrade to the quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Additional from Audi:

The Audi Q5 Sportback is available with a 2.0 TDI engine, part of the EA288 evo generation, delivering 150 kW (204 horsepower) and 400 Nm of torque, exclusively paired with all-wheel drive. As the premier model in the series, Audi is set to launch the SQ5 Sportback in the second quarter of 2025. This top-tier version features a three-liter V6 TFSI engine, producing 270 kW (367 horsepower) and a peak torque of 550 Nm.

Pricing

Starting December 2024, customers can place orders for the new Q5 Sportback and the SQ5 Sportback. The starting price for these models in Germany is 54,800 Euros and 85,400 Euros for the S variant, respectively. This pricing sets the Sportback at a 2,500 Euro premium over the Q5 SUV and 1,250 Euros higher than its predecessor.

Overview of Ford's Upcoming Releases for 2025

Anticipation is high for the release of the electric Puma, along with a revamped Capri and two other models in the pipeline…

What's on the horizon for Ford in 2025? A focus on electric vehicles. Among the anticipated new offerings in Europe from the American automaker are a refreshed Capri model, the battery-powered Puma, and a plug-in hybrid version of the Ranger. In addition to these vehicles, there's buzz in both American and European media about the debut of a new model designed on a versatile multi-energy platform.

Upcoming Ford Capri Model

Set to Debut in 2024

The Capri series, constructed on VW Group's MEB platform, is set to be fully launched in early 2025 with the debut of its base model. This particular model will feature a rear-mounted single motor with 170 horsepower and a 52-kWh battery, anticipated to deliver a driving range of approximately 370 km as per the WLTP cycle. Moreover, it's expected to maintain the capability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 9 seconds.

Ford Unveils New Multi-Energy Platform Vehicle

2024 Ford Focus ST Edition

The identity and market stance of this enigmatic new Ford model remain under wraps, yet it's poised to be a significant breakthrough in 2025. It's designed around a versatile Multi-Energy Platform capable of supporting hybrid engines as well as fully electric drive systems. This makes it a perfect option to cater to the diverse requirements of a wide range of car users.

There's talk of the EcoSport making a comeback, alongside rumors of a potential successor to the Focus, which is set to cease production in the near future. It's uncertain what the American company will decide to do next.

Electric Ford Puma

Ford's Puma Electric Vehicle as showcased by Motor1.com

The American manufacturer is possibly looking at its most anticipated model for the year 2025. Following the success of the combustion engine version, Ford is aiming for a repeat performance with its electric variant. The technical specs of the electric Puma remain under wraps, but it's expected that the vehicle will boast features in line with the rest of the category.

We envision models equipped with a solo front motor exceeding 130 horsepower, a battery capacity between 40 to 50 kWh, and an estimated driving range close to 400 kilometers. It's conceivable that Ford may eventually introduce additional, more powerful variants that could bear the performance-oriented ST badge.

Ford Ranger PHEV

Scheduled for 2025, the Ford Ranger will be available

The inaugural Ford Ranger Plug-in-Hybrid, which made its debut at the IAA Transportation event in Hannover last September, is slated for release at the beginning of 2025. This American pickup truck will feature a 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a 75-kW electric motor and a battery boasting a net capacity of 11.8 kWh. Combined, the vehicle offers an all-wheel drive with an output of 279 horsepower and 690 Nm of torque, capable of traveling up to 45 kilometers on electric power alone.

The payload capacity of the partly electrified Ranger is one ton, with a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tons.
