Inside the Decision: Why Williams Chose Colapinto Over Schumacher and Lawson for F1 Seat
Understanding the Decision: Why Williams Chose Not to Go with Mick Schumacher or Liam Lawson
Unveiling the Nearly Missed Chance for Mick Schumacher and Liam Lawson at Williams
Williams overlooked both Mick Schumacher and Liam Lawson during their midyear switch of drivers.
Logan Sargeant has lost his position in Formula 1, between the recent Dutch Grand Prix and the upcoming race in Monza this weekend.
Franco Colapinto, a member of the Williams Driver Academy, has been confirmed to take over Sargeant's position as a permanent driver, partnering with Alex Albon for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Mercedes and Red Bull proposed drivers from within their own ranks as potential replacements for Sargeant.
"Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff expressed his desire for Mick to receive an opportunity, stating that we've yet to witness the true potential of their third driver."
Christian Horner of Red Bull mentioned regarding their backup driver Lawson: "Should there be a need for a driver the following weekend, we would be amenable to the idea."
Williams team leader James Vowles lost his patience with Sargeant following his expensive accident on Saturday at Zandvoort, which resulted in his damaged car being unable to be fixed in time for the qualifying round.
"According to F1.com, Vowles dedicated the afternoon and evening to reaching out to different teams, seeking a substitute for the upcoming Monza race in a week’s time."
Colapinto has landed a chance to participate in just nine races, as Williams already has agreements with Albon and Carlos Sainz for the upcoming season.
Why was Schumacher not chosen by Williams?
According to the same report, Schumacher was "never a leading candidate" to secure the last-minute racing seat with Williams.
The rapport between Mercedes' Wolff and former associate Vowles could have facilitated Schumacher's comeback to the F1 circuit. However, Williams chose to bypass him instead.
Schumacher was left without a seat at Haas following the conclusion of 2022, and has gone two seasons without participating in any races.
Last week, the announcement by Alpine that they had selected newcomer Jack Doohan for their 2025 vehicle was a significant setback for the optimistic Schumacher.
He's now witnessed the opportunity to compete in nine races with Williams disappear.
The open position at Sauber, set to transform into Audi, could still appeal to Schumacher, especially due to his German connections with the powerful car maker.
Williams didn't select Lawson because the conditions under which Red Bull agreed to lend him were not feasible, according to F1.com.
Red Bull was hesitant to release Lawson since he is still considered a potential candidate for them in 2024. Both Sergio Perez and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo are being closely watched.
Red Bull deemed it infeasible to permit Williams to retain Lawson for the entirety of 2024, as it would have diminished their team's strength.
Williams was unwilling to agree to a deal that would have permitted Red Bull to reclaim him later in the year, according to the same report.
Last weekend, there was significant buzz about Lawson's career prospects after Helmut Marko appeared to assure him of a racing seat in 2025 with either Red Bull or RB.
Horner subsequently explained that when Marko referred to a race drive, he was talking about a position on the F1 grid in general, not with any of their specific teams.
However, the entrance to Williams is now firmly closed.
