Horner Foresees Intense Four-Way F1 Battle Leading Up to 2026 Regulations Overhaul
Christian Horner predicts a relentless fight among four Formula 1 teams over the coming 18 months.
Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, forecasts an intense competition among four Formula 1 teams in the coming year and a half.
The current global champions, Red Bull, kicked off the season with a strong start, as Max Verstappen clinched victories in four out of the initial five competitions. However, as the season progressed, the competition has tightened, with teams such as McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari stepping up their game and becoming increasingly competitive.
Red Bull seems to have lost their edge in speed, and Verstappen hasn't clinched a win in the past five races, with his most recent triumph taking place at the Spanish Grand Prix in June.
Mercedes has secured victories in three out of the last four races, whereas Oscar Piastri led a McLaren one-two finish in Hungary.
Throughout the first 14 races of the 2024 season, a diverse group of seven drivers have each claimed victory in a grand prix.
Horner is of the opinion that this pattern will persist, forecasting that the competition among teams will become increasingly close until the implementation of new rules set for 2026.
"Horner expressed enthusiasm for the situation, noting that the natural outcome of standardized regulations is often a unification of approaches within the sport."
"I recall my initial entry into Formula 1, with Ron Dennis strongly emphasizing this point back in 2005. The concept of convergence has consistently united the teams.
"Indeed, there's a significant change in regulations set for 2026, which will introduce variety, but in the interim, specifically over the coming 18 months, it's expected to be a tight race among the four teams."
Verstappen continues to maintain a significant advantage in the drivers' championship, yet the competition for the constructors' title is far from decided, as McLaren trails Red Bull by just 42 points with 10 races remaining.
"Horner further mentioned that increasing Max's lead before the summer break would allow him a more relaxing break. He emphasized that the team's priority remains the constructors' championship, noting that they've lost an additional seven or eight points at Spa."
"It's crucial for us to make a comeback after the pause in Zandvoort."
