Horner Defends Perez Amidst Spanish GP Struggles, Highlights Red Bull’s Strengthened Constructors’ Lead
Christian Horner swiftly comes to Sergio Perez's defense: "Did we not increase our advantage today?"
Christian Horner expressed satisfaction that Red Bull widened their gap at the top of the constructors' standings after the race in Barcelona.
Christian Horner quickly highlighted that Red Bull increased their advantage in the F1 constructors' standings, even though Sergio Perez faced challenges at the Spanish Grand Prix.
In Sunday's event at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Perez managed to secure only an eighth-place finish.
In a stroke of luck for Red Bull, Max Verstappen keeps showcasing his exceptional skills, securing his seventh victory of the season.
Overall, McLaren's car was faster during the race, yet Verstappen managed to gain an early advantage and secure a lead after a key pass on George Russell.
Following the race in Barcelona, Red Bull expanded their lead in the points tally to 60, a detail that Horner emphasized in response to inquiries regarding Perez's slump in performance.
Tally from the Spanish Grand Prix
Red Bull – 29
Mercedes, aged 27
McLaren – Twenty-Five
Ferrari – Eighteen
In a conversation with a handful of journalists, including those from Crash.net on Sunday, Horner remarked, "If I'm correct, did we manage to increase our advantage today?"
Horner emphasized, “It’s crucial for Checo to be competitive. He's aware, as is the team. Being outside the leading group limits our strategic choices, whether it's diversifying strategies or otherwise. In the initial 4 to 5 races this season, Checo showed impressive performance. Our goal is to help him return to that mindset.”
Perez faced a challenging weekend ahead as he was burdened with a three-place grid penalty carried over from his last race.
He adopted a strategy involving three pit stops, enabling him to surpass Alpine’s Pierre Gasly towards the end of the race.
Horner is optimistic that Perez will gain "confidence" from his comeback into the points.
"He has faced some challenges in recent races," he described. "Circumstances haven't favored him, and in my view, his performance heavily relies on his confidence level. With his recent return to scoring points and showing a solid performance, it's hoped that this will boost his confidence for the future competitions."
