Game-Changer: Lewis Hamilton Hails Upgraded W15 as Mercedes Secures Best Qualifying of the Season at British GP
‘Significant improvement’ – Lewis Hamilton describes the enhanced W15 as “better all around”
Lewis Hamilton shares his thoughts on the recent upgrades to Mercedes' W15, noting that the improvements have made the car perform "better all around."
According to Lewis Hamilton, the Mercedes W15 F1 car has improved across the board, contributing to the team's top qualifying performance of the year at the British Grand Prix, reports Lewis Larkam from Silverstone.
George Russell led a British sweep of the top three positions in an exciting qualifying session at Silverstone, which featured both wet and dry conditions. He secured pole position, finishing 0.171 seconds ahead of his teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Lando Norris of McLaren claimed the third spot.
Mercedes has recently made significant strides in improving their problematic W15, thanks to an intensive development effort that has seen numerous upgrades added to the vehicle.
When questioned about the changes in the W15 since the beginning of the season, Hamilton responded, "It's a huge difference."
When asked to elaborate on the differences, Hamilton responded, "In every aspect. It's simply improved across the board."
"Take Bahrain, for instance; the car's performance was awful initially. However, we made significant strides in adjusting and fine-tuning it to enhance the aerodynamic setup."
"The team has consistently succeeded in enhancing performance, but the key challenge with this generation of car has been deciding where to focus that performance and understanding the sources of our downforce."
"The engineers at the factory have performed exceptionally well. However, it's important to note that while we would certainly appreciate our current position, Red Bull, especially Max, and the McLarens remain incredibly fast."
"In certain aspects, as you may have noticed in the previous race, they had a significant lead over us. Therefore, I'm optimistic that the conditions tomorrow will allow us to stay competitive."
Following his achievement of securing his second pole position of the year, just a week after delivering Mercedes' inaugural victory since 2022, Russell asserted that the team has now discovered a “sweet spot” with their vehicle.
"We've implemented a few minor adjustments that have resulted in significant improvements," he said. "From the beginning of this year, we recognized that the fundamental design of this car is vastly superior to what we've worked with in past years."
"We transitioned from a car with oversteer issues last year to one with understeer problems this year. Now, we've adjusted it to achieve a balanced setup."
"When the balance is optimal and the tire temperatures are within the ideal range, the lap times improve significantly in a positive way. Although the change wasn't major, it has had a huge impact on the lap time."
