From F1 to IndyCar: Angela Cullen’s Impactful Transition as Marcus Armstrong’s ‘Guiding Force
Angela Cullen hailed as a pivotal influence by her trainee, a newcomer to IndyCar racing
"Her role extends far beyond the ordinary; she plays a crucial part in our daily routines. Describing her merely as a physiotherapist doesn't quite capture it. She embodies much more."
Marcus Armstrong has highlighted the influence of Angela Cullen, noting she's the first driver he has coached following Lewis Hamilton.
Cullen and Hamilton formed an integral duo at F1 grand prix events for a span of seven years before their partnership came to an end last year.
The previous physiotherapist for Hamilton has made a comeback to racing by joining Armstrong's team in the IndyCar series.
Armstrong shared with PA regarding her, "It was quite unexpected because, honestly, after dedicating numerous years to F1, you would assume one might prefer to step away from motorsport and take some time off.
"However, it's actually the reverse."
"Her enthusiasm for the sport is undeniable. As we began conversing informally, it quickly became apparent that we were connecting and truly in sync with each other."
Armstrong realized the importance of enhancing his physical condition for his inaugural season as a full-time IndyCar driver, which led to his connection with Cullen.
Both of them had returned to their homeland of New Zealand at the time the partnership was established.
"Armstrong mentioned that she possesses a wealth of experience."
"She has witnessed championships being secured, observing the process and techniques employed by Mercedes and similar experiences."
"Having her involved serves as a beacon of inspiration, direction, and encouragement."
"We haven't been collaborating for too long, yet I can't fathom how I handled races before she came along.
"She aids me in initially removing the distractions, as there are numerous in this sport."
"Our primary objective is centered on achieving results. If an activity doesn't yield performance outcomes, we simply won't pursue it."
"She plays a significant role in directing our daily activities."
"She isn't strictly a physical therapist, to put it another way. She goes beyond that."
"If it doesn’t improve our race times, we simply won’t pursue it, clear and straightforward.
"We're still in the process of establishing our base. We're laying down our groundwork."
"Ultimately, our goal is to establish a consistent routine and a strong work ethic that enables us to contend for race victories and championships consistently over the years."
"Receiving confirmation from her, who has clearly witnessed championship victories in the past, that this is the correct approach to take — signifies that we're on the right path."
