Fernando Alonso Faces Uphill Battle at Aston Martin: Patience Required as Team Builds for Future Success
Fernando Alonso openly discussed Aston Martin's journey
"We have a significant journey ahead."
Fernando Alonso has been informed that it could take more than a year before Aston Martin achieves “something remarkable”.
Alonso signed a fresh contract with the Formula 1 squad that extends through to the close of 2026, at which point he will have reached the age of 45.
This year, they've been outpaced by Red Bull, Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari.
During the recent Belgian Grand Prix, Alonso finished in eighth place, while his teammate, Lance Stroll, came in 11th.
"A tough challenge," remarked Stoffel Vandoorne, Aston Martin's backup driver, during an interview on the F1 Nation podcast. "The nature of our vehicle had us anticipating a more favorable weekend in terms of competition.
"We anticipated being faster in terms of straight-line velocity. Instead, we found ourselves at a disadvantage."
"In our situation with Fernando, we found ourselves in an ambiguous position. He secured a win among the secondary tier of competitors, so to speak. This left us trailing the front-runners yet ahead of the other remaining teams."
"Regrettably, this is the current situation we find ourselves in."
"We have a considerable journey in front of us."
Alonso has conveyed his desire to utilize the rest of this year, following the summer hiatus, to address shortcomings within Aston Martin, aiming for a strong comeback in 2025.
Vandoorne expressed, "I believe we haven't reached that point. It's going to require some more time."
"There's still ample opportunity in the latter half of the year to improve our prospects for the upcoming season."
"Advancing with improvements is challenging, but it really comes down to grasping the essence of these vehicles, identifying what they require. Understanding the specific traits they need."
"The leading teams excel because they understand the specific aspects to focus on and how to enhance them."
"We deliver items that function properly along with some that don't quite meet the mark. It's the latter that we need to concentrate on."
Aston Martin has openly discussed their bold intentions, which encompass securing a more extended contract with two-time F1 champion Alonso.
Wealthy proprietor Lawrence Stroll is supervising the construction of a new base at Silverstone, and in a couple of years, they will join forces with Honda in response to the upcoming engine regulations.
The squad is also contenders to recruit Adrian Newey, the chief technical officer of Red Bull.
Vandoorne clarified, "The new wind tunnel isn't operational at this moment. We anticipate it will be available for use by the year's end.
"It will be advantageous. However, initially, it may pose some difficulties since it's a novel instrument.
A fresh approach to how things operate within the system is on the horizon. However, improvements will not be immediate from the outset.
"We're also in the process of constructing a new simulator, set to be completed by the year's end."
"We're laying the groundwork to become a winning team. Our focus next year will be on establishing a solid base for 2026."
"The year 2026 marks a significant milestone due to changes in regulations. Honda will be joining our team, presenting a formidable challenge. However, this also opens up a chance to build something truly exceptional."
By that time, Alonso will have reached the age of 45. However, he has already shown his support for his team's ambitious projects by committing to a lucrative new contract.
