Embracing the Heat: Andrea Kimi Antonelli on Navigating the Buzz of Replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025
Andrea Kimi Antonelli is 'attempting to take pleasure' in the speculation around Mercedes F1
"Lately, there's been a bit of stress, but I've been attempting to find joy in it"
Mercedes Formula 1 rising star Andrea Kimi Antonelli has stated that he has “attempted to relish” the stress stemming from speculations that he might take over Lewis Hamilton's spot in 2025.
At just 17 years old, this Italian racer is currently among the most promising talents within the Formula 1 arena. Having clinched the championship in the Formula Regional European Championship last year, Antonelli is making a significant leap directly to Formula 2 with Prema in 2024.
Despite facing a challenging leap, Antonelli has secured two victories in races and currently ranks seventh in the standings, holding a 53-point advantage over his Formula 1-bound colleague, Oliver Bearman.
Following Hamilton's revelation that he will join Ferrari in 2025, speculation has grown about Antonelli potentially stepping up to Mercedes to fill the void left by the seven-time champion.
In a conversation with motorsport.com, Antonelli expressed his thoughts on the speculation, stating, "I believe there's always a bit of concern, the idea of not delivering performance is something that scares everyone."
"I consider it a wonderful chance to gain knowledge, develop, and take pleasure in the experience."
"I don't fear criticism because I understand that Mercedes recognizes what I'm capable of. Even though this season in F2 didn't start as well as hoped, it didn't lead to any negative perceptions.
"I remain composed, and should the chance come my way, I would seize it enthusiastically and strive to maximize its potential."
Lately, I've felt a bit of strain due to the speculation surrounding what's coming up next year, but I've consistently aimed to find joy in it. I'm really appreciating the chances I'm getting.
Mercedes has accelerated Antonelli's progress this season, allowing the Italian to participate in multiple private tests using one of the team's F1 cars from two years ago.
He described his initial trial in April in Austria as an "exceptionally positive experience," mentioning that driving an F1 car instills a significant amount of confidence.
Antonelli's unexpected move from FRECA to F2 elicited a variety of reactions, with some viewing it as an overly ambitious leap and others anticipating his immediate competitiveness.
However, the young athlete commented, "Upon hearing their proposal, my initial thought was that it was a significant leap since the norm is to progress to F3 initially. Yet, the prospect of facing this challenge was instantly enticing to me."
"I hadn't intended to dominate in F2 right from the start, knowing full well that transitioning from Formula Regional would pose significant challenges. I recognized there was much for me to absorb, a process I'm still engaged in."
