Daniel Ricciardo Apologizes for Hulkenberg Clash Amid Penalty Troubles at Italian GP
Daniel Ricciardo discusses collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the incident involving Haas during the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after the two had an incident on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull's Ricciardo clashed with Hulkenberg on the first lap of Sunday's race in Monza while they were fighting for position in the middle of the pack at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision. This incident pushed Hulkenberg's Haas car onto the dirt, allowing Kevin Magnussen, Hulkenberg's teammate, to overtake him.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident, but later faced an additional 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched the car during the initial penalty at the pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at his home track for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“Today, our speed just wasn’t up to par, even setting aside the penalties,” he commented.
"We gave it our all, and I was having fun battling side-by-side in the early stages, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and realized I thought we had enough space. However, I felt the contact, which means I didn't leave sufficient room, so I apologized."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The car performed adequately afterward, and we exerted maximum effort given our resources. From Friday afternoon until today, I was striving to extract the utmost performance from the vehicle."
“I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly earned some points.”
Tsunoda Ends Race in Disappointment
The Italian Grand Prix for Red Bull was influenced by Hulkenberg, says team member Laurent Mekies. An incident involving Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda resulted in the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
"I'm quite annoyed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda stated.
"I attempted to give plenty of room, but it looked like he froze up, lost control, and collided with me."
“Regrettably, we had to pull the car out of the race due to damage sustained to the floor.”
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't manage to drive it."
"Up next are Baku and Singapore, where our vehicle is expected to do well. We're optimistic about having successful weekends at those events."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important time on the track with the upgraded RB car that was introduced at Monza.
"In today's race, it could be argued that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. After that, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most aggravating part about Yuki retiring is that we missed out on 40 laps, which would have enhanced our grasp of the new updates we rolled out here."
"Daniel was subsequently given an additional 10-second penalty because the initial penalty wasn't applied properly."
"We need to evaluate our processes in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Such incidents occur, but overall, our pit crew's performance has been outstanding this season."
