Coriano Unveils Town Entrance Memorial for Marco Simoncelli
Hometown to Celebrate the Late Simoncelli with a Fresh Homage
This week, the town of Coriano, close to Misano, is set to unveil a new homage to the deceased MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli at the town's entrance.
Simoncelli met a fatal end in an accident at the 2011 MotoGP Malaysian Grand Prix.
In 2008, the Italian rider clinched the 250cc world championship, and then in 2010, he advanced to MotoGP, joining the Gresini team to ride the Honda RC212V.
He continued to race for the Gresini team throughout 2011, achieving his initial MotoGP podium finish at the Czech GP that year, followed by another podium position in Australia, merely a week before his passing.
Following his passing in 2011, a variety of tributes have been dedicated to celebrating Simoncelli's legacy.
A memorial plaque was placed at the turn of the Sepang International Circuit where the tragic incident occurred, in honor of the individual who died there.
The Misano track was rechristened to commemorate him, and a museum dedicated to his racing legacy was inaugurated in his native Coriano.
Paolo Simoncelli continues to honor his son's memory by managing the SIC58 Squadra Corse team, presently racing in the Moto3 World Championship.
Before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Misano this weekend, a roundabout at the Coriano entrance will feature a newly revealed Simoncelli exhibit, created by Aldo Drudi.
The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday.
"According to what Gianluca Ugolini, the mayor of Coriano, shared with Rimini Today, we succeeded in making it on time for the dual MotoGP event, prepared to name Coriano’s principal road entrance after Marco Simoncelli."
"A celebrated and intentional milestone, made possible through the initial collaboration with Aldo Drudi in designing the project, and throughout the years with the Simoncelli family, with whom numerous projects were jointly undertaken."
"Besides being an exceptional rider, Marco quickly became the person everyone admired for his constant generosity. It's for these reasons we've decided to honor him once more through this tribute."
