Coriano Honors Fallen MotoGP Hero Marco Simoncelli with New Gateway Tribute
Coriano to honor Marco Simoncelli with a tribute at the town entrance
The late Marco Simoncelli will be commemorated with a new tribute in his hometown of Coriano
This week, the town of Coriano, close to Misano, will unveil a new memorial honoring the late MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli at its entrance.
Simoncelli sadly passed away following an accident at the 2011 MotoGP race in Malaysia.
The Italian rider clinched the 250cc world championship in 2008 and then advanced to MotoGP in 2010, joining the Gresini team and riding a Honda RC212V.
In 2011, he continued to race with the Gresini team and achieved his first MotoGP podium finish at the Czech Grand Prix. He then secured another podium at the Australian Grand Prix, only a week before his passing.
Following his passing in 2011, many memorials have been established to honor Simoncelli.
A memorial plaque was installed at the corner of the Sepang International Circuit where the tragic accident occurred, resulting in his death.
The Misano track was dedicated to him, and a museum in Coriano, his hometown, was established to showcase his racing achievements.
Paolo Simoncelli continues to honor his late son by managing the SIC58 Squadra Corse team, which is actively participating in the Moto3 World Championship.
Just before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Misano this weekend, a new exhibit dedicated to Simoncelli, created by Aldo Drudi, will be revealed at a roundabout located at the entrance to Coriano.
The official event is scheduled for Thursday.
Gianluca Ugolini, the mayor of Coriano, informed Rimini Today that they successfully met the deadline set by the MotoGP event to dedicate Coriano's main road entrance to Marco Simoncelli.
"A significant and intentional anniversary, made possible by the initial harmony with Aldo Drudi in designing the project, and strengthened over the years through collaboration with the Simoncelli family on numerous initiatives."
"Besides being an exceptionally talented rider, Marco, who always showed generosity in every circumstance, was the kind of young man everyone admired. This dedication is our way of honoring him once more."
