**Christian Horner Addresses Tough Questions on Sergio Perez’s Future Amid Performance Pressures**
Christian Horner reacts to a "very tough question" regarding his confidence in Sergio Perez
"We believed that the agreement would provide assistance…"
Christian Horner acknowledges that Sergio Perez, who has been facing criticism, is under significant pressure to perform.
The second driver for Red Bull entered the F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend with the awareness that, even with his recently signed contract, discussions about his future with the team have resurfaced.
Perez's performance has seen him accumulate only 11 points over the last four races, raising doubts about whether Red Bull extended his contract too soon.
Red Bull's team principal, Horner, was questioned about whether he regrets committing to Perez so early.
He told Sky Sports, "That's an extremely difficult question."
"Naturally, when a driver is signed, the details of the contract will not be shared with people like you."
"Signing Sergio at that particular moment was completely logical."
"In this industry, there is an expectation to produce results."
He went on to say, "Sergio faced a challenging period. While his initial five races were highly competitive, the last five have shown no such performance."
"We're looking for Sergio to return to the form he showed in his first five games. He understands this and is conscious of it."
"He’s put a lot of effort into that. He’s spent time in the simulator this week, trying to grasp why things aren’t going his way."
"We have frequently observed his ability to recover quickly. We are optimistic that we will witness it again shortly."
Perez’s recent decline in performance brings to mind a similar period last year when a lack of results put his position as Max Verstappen’s teammate in jeopardy.
“That’s the reason we believed the contract would be beneficial,” Horner confessed.
"He’s putting in a lot of effort on this issue, and he’s aware of it."
"This sport leaves no room for concealment. Especially when Max Verstappen is your teammate, he understands he's being compared to the elite."
"We need his presence alongside Max since there are two McLarens, two Ferraris, and two Mercedes. It’s crucial for us to have two Red Bulls in the mix."
In three out of the first four races this season, Perez secured second place behind Verstappen, achieving an ideal outcome for Red Bull.
Alongside Daniel Ricciardo's poor performance as a potential substitute, Perez managed to surprisingly solidify his standing in F1's leading vehicle.
However, he did not complete the races in Canada and Monaco, but secured eighth place in Spain and seventh place in Austria.
Even though Perez has some security from the contract he inked during better times, he understands that it won't shield him if his performance doesn't improve quickly.
