Carlos Sainz’s Bold Move: Joining Williams Racing on a Multi-Year Deal Amidst F1’s Driver Market Shake-Up
Carlos Sainz has signed a multi-year Formula 1 contract with Williams, marking his departure from Ferrari to the new team.
Williams has confirmed the signing of Carlos Sainz to a multi-year Formula 1 contract.
The future of Sainz in Formula 1 has been the subject of much speculation ever since the surprising news broke in February that Lewis Hamilton is moving from Mercedes to Ferrari.
The Spanish driver has played a crucial role in the driver market this year, with connections to Williams, Sauber, and Alpine being rumored in recent times.
Sainz has opted to sign a multi-year agreement with Williams, teaming up with Alex Albon.
Discussing recent developments, Sainz expressed, “I’m thrilled to share that starting in 2025, I’ll be part of the Williams Racing team. It's well-known that the driver market this year has been unusually complicated for a number of reasons, leading to a delay in revealing my choice.
"Nevertheless, I firmly believe that Williams is the ideal team for me to advance my Formula 1 career, and it fills me with immense pride to join a team with such a rich history and legacy, where many of the racing legends I looked up to as a child made their impact in the sport. My ultimate aim is to help elevate Williams to its rightful position at the forefront of the grid, a goal I am eager and positive about taking on. I am certain that with the right mix of elements, this team is poised to create more history. Starting from January 1, I am committed to putting my all into pushing Williams ahead, working closely with every team member."
"I'm grateful to James Vowles and the whole Williams Board for their faith and resolve. Their steadfast guidance and beliefs greatly influenced my choices. I'm convinced that the essence of any victorious team is found within its members and ethos. Williams represents tradition and authentic racing, and the groundwork for our upcoming project is robust. I'm eagerly anticipating my involvement beginning next year."
Williams is viewed as a promising venture under the leadership of James Vowles.
Vowles is set on transforming Williams into a leading Formula 1 team, with his sights firmly set on excelling under the 2026 F1 rules.
Signing Sainz marks a significant milestone for Williams, presenting them with their most formidable Formula 1 driver duo since Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa teamed up in 2016.
Regarding the acquisition of Sainz, Vowles remarked, "Carlos's move to Williams signals a significant commitment from both sides. Carlos has consistently proven himself as one of the grid's most skilled drivers, possessing the ability to win races, which emphasizes our team's positive momentum. Carlos not only contributes his expertise and competitive edge, but also a relentless ambition to maximize every bit of potential from both the team and the vehicle; it's an ideal match.
"With Alex and Carlos behind the wheel, our team boasts an exceptionally strong pair of drivers, bringing a wealth of experience that will be invaluable as we navigate the new 2026 regulations. Their commitment to our team's vision underscores the significant efforts being undertaken out of the public eye. It's clear evidence of our resolve and forward movement as we strive to reclaim our competitive edge – we are present, we are determined, and with the support of Dorilton, we are dedicating the necessary resources to make our way back to the leading positions on the grid."
"I'd also like to express my gratitude to Logan for his contributions to the team and am confident he will keep giving his all in the upcoming races."
