Alonso Reflects on Verstappen’s Early Retirement Talk: A Glimpse Into the Mindset of F1’s Veterans and Newcomers
"Fernando Alonso's response to early retirement speculations about Max Verstappen
"I had the same thoughts at Max's age."
Fernando Alonso concedes that during his earlier years, he "couldn't" detach himself from Formula 1, responding to statements made by Max Verstappen.
Current Formula 1 titleholder Verstappen, who is 26 years old, has consistently stated his intentions to retire from the sport while still fairly young.
Alonso stepped away from Formula 1 in 2018, but after a two-year break, he made a comeback.
Alonso, who is currently the most senior driver in the lineup, has recently inked a fresh deal with Aston Martin that ensures his presence in Formula 1 racing until the age of 45.
When The Times inquired about Verstappen's desire to retire early, he responded, "That's exactly what was on my mind at Max’s age.
Reflecting on the past, I recall that in 2007, after clinching the World Championship with Renault, I entered into a three-year agreement with McLaren. At that time, I was utterly convinced that this would be my final contract.
"In 2018, I believed it was the final chapter of my career, bidding farewell to F1 as I felt I had accomplished what I set out to do."
"I discovered that, even upon making the decision to quit, I was unable to do so."
Double Formula 1 title-holder Alonso has regained a sense of his former confidence after becoming a part of the Aston Martin team.
The squad is looking forward to significant developments in the coming years, such as establishing a new headquarters and partnering with Honda for engine supply, which may advantage the experienced driver.
However, he is aware that retirement is an inevitability that can't
"Alonso mentioned that he's aware it's on its way back shortly."
"The instant I definitively bid farewell to Formula 1, I'm unsure of my next steps."
"It's quite unusual, given that we're among the elite, with only 20 individuals worldwide having the opportunity to race in Formula 1 cars.
"Thus, it makes sense that you believe you'll enjoy doing this as long as you're quick and content."
"Yet concurrently, it strips away all aspects of your life that bring you joy."
"We're planning to make some changes, including having my family attend more races and similar activities, to minimize the negative aspects."
