Zak Brown Criticizes Red Bull’s ‘Toxic Environment’ and Predicts Further Departures Following Adrian Newey’s Exit
Zak Brown has described Red Bull as "quite toxic" and foresees additional significant departures following Adrian Newey's exit from the team.
McLaren's CEO, Zak Brown, thinks that Red Bull has a "highly negative atmosphere" and anticipates additional significant personnel leaving following Adrian Newey's departure from Formula 1.
Prior to the Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull revealed that Newey will depart from the team during the first quarter of 2025.
Newey mentioned that his choice to depart from Red Bull was influenced by the lengthy duration of his time with the team and his potential interest in exploring new ventures, possibly within the F1 realm.
Some sources indicated that Newey's departure was connected to the deteriorating environment within the team following the Christian Horner controversy earlier this year.
Brown mentioned earlier that many Red Bull staff members have been sending in their resumes, a statement that Toto Wolff confirmed.
The head of McLaren has taken it a step further by calling Red Bull "quite toxic."
"Red Bull is currently a rather unhealthy atmosphere," stated Brown. "There will be further developments."
"The departure of Newey is significant, as many individuals at Red Bull had begun their careers under his leadership. I previously noted that there were resumes being shared around."
"Such incidents are quite common, but there's a noticeable increase in unease. I believe that securing sponsorships will become more challenging in the future, as sponsors will scrutinize their associations more closely. It's a complex issue."
Max Verstappen's plans remain uncertain even though he is under contract with Red Bull until late 2028.
Mercedes and their team principal, Toto Wolff, have shown interest in Max Verstappen as a potential successor to Lewis Hamilton.
Amid encouraging developments from Mercedes regarding their 2026 F1 engine, Verstappen could consider switching teams when the new regulations take effect.
According to Brown, the entire scenario has now unsettled Red Bull.
Brown commented on the situation surrounding Verstappen, questioning whether he will remain or depart. He noted that Max is under contract, but highlighted that Max’s father has been quite vocal.
"Red Bull is a formidable racing team, but it's currently experiencing some instability. This is evident with Newey's departure. Nonetheless, they remain a persistent force in the racing world."
"They're undoubtedly a remarkable team, but in my opinion, their strength isn't what it once was. Currently, Ferrari and McLaren seem to have the clearest path forward and the most momentum. However, circumstances can shift rapidly, so we need to stay grounded."
