Wolff Identifies Tyre Temperature Control as Mercedes’ Key Challenge at Singapore Grand Prix
Toto Wolff discusses the primary hurdle Mercedes faces at the Singapore Grand Prix
Toto Wolff previews the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, highlighting the significant obstacle they must overcome.
Toto Wolff is of the opinion that the primary obstacle for Mercedes in the upcoming Formula 1 race in Singapore will be managing the temperatures of the tyres, given their varying performance in the previous race in Azerbaijan.
In the latter stages of Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Mercedes demonstrated exceptional speed, leaving George Russell perplexed by the significant difference in how the two tire types performed.
Russell demonstrated remarkable speed on the hard tire, which is less prone to overheating.
The Marina Bay Street Circuit is expected to present a similar obstacle, given the high temperatures and the demanding characteristics of the grand prix.
Anticipating the weekend, Wolff remarked, “We immediately proceed to Singapore for the subsequent race of this back-to-back series. Despite being a street circuit similar to Baku, Marina Bay presents a distinct challenge.
"From a physical standpoint, the challenges are immense for both the drivers and the team staff. The combination of high temperatures and humidity is a significant factor, as is the nature of the circuit itself."
"The track has uneven patches, features a variety of slow and fast turns, and the barriers are ready to snag you if you're not careful."
Following the summer hiatus, Mercedes has had difficulty regaining their previous performance level.
Prior to the Zandvoort Grand Prix, Mercedes had emerged victorious in three out of the four preceding races, positioning themselves as the team in top form in Formula 1.
However, since that time, they've faced challenges as Ferrari has regained a superior position in the hierarchy.
"Wolff further stated, 'Following a varied weekend in Azerbaijan, we intend to apply the insights gained from Baku to strive for better results in Singapore.'"
Occasionally, we maintained a solid speed, yet our performance lacked steadiness. Managing the temperature of the tyres posed a significant hurdle for us, and it's an area we recognize requires enhancement.
"It's uplifting to see that once our car is operational, we have the speed needed to contend."
"Although we secured a spot on the podium, we acknowledge that it was due to luck, and rightfully, we were in fifth place based on our performance."
