Verstappen’s Frustration Boils Over: A Tale of Strategy and Missteps at the Austrian Grand Prix
"Everything was mishandled" – Max Verstappen expresses disappointment with Red Bull's strategy in Austria
Max Verstappen expressed his dissatisfaction with how Red Bull managed the Austrian Grand Prix.
SPIELBERG, AUSTRIA – Max Verstappen openly expressed his disappointment with Red Bull's approach and performance during the F1 Austrian Grand Prix, lamenting that "everything just went wrong."
The triple world champion seemed set for an easy win at the Red Bull Ring until a delayed second pit stop put him at risk from McLaren’s Lando Norris.
Verstappen managed to fend off multiple challenges from Norris until an incident at Turn 3 on the 64th lap resulted in both racers sustaining tire punctures, necessitating pit stops for repairs.
Norris had to bow out early while Verstappen managed to keep going, ending up in fifth place. This allowed Mercedes' George Russell to take advantage of the situation and secure an unexpected victory.
Following the race, the driver from the Netherlands confessed that he thought Red Bull had committed several errors during key moments of Sunday's 71-lap event.
"Verstappen expressed that the initial phase went well, but towards its conclusion, he encountered significant traffic. He suggested that they could have opted for a pit stop to circumvent this issue, as it resulted in the unnecessary loss of lap time."
"Today, we made numerous mistakes across the board. It began with our approach, and then the pit stops were a complete mess."
"The initial one was terrible, and the subsequent one turned out to be an even bigger debacle. Naturally, this results in handing over free lap time. You end up losing six seconds across those two pit stops."
"Subsequently, the competition intensifies. This places us in a predicament where, regrettably, accidents can occur, something we always hope to avoid."
"We made every possible mistake that could have been made."
When queried about whether his frustration stemmed more from Red Bull's race strategy and its execution rather than the clash with Norris, Verstappen responded, "Absolutely, because today has just been terrible. Everything went awry."
"I'm expressing dissatisfaction regarding the tires because we didn't make a pit stop. I ended up being caught in congestion, and there was poor management of the pit stops. Thus, everything simply took a turn for the worse."
Verstappen remarked, "Today was simply terrible. I truly can't explain why."
"Out of nowhere, the vehicle shifted from being moderately balanced during the initial phase to exhibiting uncontrollable behavior thereafter, suggesting that there was likely an issue at play."
"Yet, even considering that, we could have secured a victory today had it not been for the numerous mistakes made during the pit stops."
